Goan music: a long, twisted, and often colourful road across time

Goan music: a long, twisted, and often colourful road across time
- By Valmiki Faleiro

Among my many debts of gratitude, one I owe to Goan music. To
cantorists and lyricists of Konknni songs. To those who set
the verses to music, and produced a repertoire very dear to a
substantial segment of Goans. From old-world gramophone
records, transistor radio and the first cinema, it was the
music that took me to the songs. The songs then took me to
the lyrics.

That is how Konknni songs, among few other things like
Konknni-speaking friends -- and the ever witty, wise, and
often wacky, world of Konknni adages -- improved my otherwise
severely limited vocabulary of the mother tongue. To them all
who scripted, scored and sang all those great Konknni songs,
here is a humble salute.

I met Frank Fernand, producer of the everlasting
songs in his early-1960s films 'Amchem Noxib' and
'Nirmonn,' in the late 1970s. I carried his angst,
on the disdain of Goa's elite and government
towards Konknni, in a Sunday piece in the
Margao-based West Coast Times I was then with. He
introduced orchestral music to Konknni song and
adapted the Tiatro celluloid. To me, he's also the
greatest Konknni music composer.

Frank Fernandes -- born Curchorem, May 3, 1919-- played the
violin and trumpet like they were toys. He was maestro to
Bollywood greats like Shankar-Jaikishan and Kalyanji-Anandji.
He set the tunes of [the prominent Konkani films of the
yesteryears] Amchem Noxib and Nirmonn to musical magic. This
great son of Goa passed away in Mumbai, April 1, 2007.

My good neighbour and friend, Francisco C. Colaco, no less a
cardiologist than the singer he also is, opines that late
Chris Perry was the greatest. I have no problems. Both Dr.
Colaco and I were blessed to be born in an area, 100 metres
in radius, that gave birth to several Konknni greats (the
list is long, but allow me to mention a few):

Joao Agostinho Fernandes, Pai Tiatrist (father of the Tiatr).
Mestre Fancu of the Holy Spirit Church and its music school,
who spawned a generation of famous musicians. His
reconstructed house at Tepodi Pandd, leading to the house of
some Tepodd -- catch Margaoites nicknaming people charitably!
-- still stands, as does the original quaint residence of the
Pai Tiatrist at Modsai.

Roque Bernardo Barreto Miranda, scion of a great literary
family, kept Konknni traditions alive with his Enfiada de
Anexins Go?se (Imprensa Nacional 1931). Amazing that such a
tiny geographic area also produced the likes of Mestre Nunes
Fernandes and Anthony Mendes, to me the greatest Konknni
comedian. His role of compounder in the film Amchem Noxib is
yet unsurpassed. And, of course, Chris, Joe and Paul-Perry.

Another 100 metres from here, then tiny Pequeno Madel gave
Goa musicians of the meter of Mestre Agostinho Carvalho. Also
the much decorated singer-comedian, Manoel Santana Aguiar
(State Award-1985, Sangeet Natak Academy's-1995, and Padma
Shree in 2005 -- an award every decade!) Born in Madel, M.
Boyer settled in Santemol, Raia. His stage brother, the
unique Jacinto Vaz, Goa's own Charlie -- Sir Charles Spencer
-- Chaplin, came from Mandur, Tiswadi though.

I am under no illusions that any justice can be
done to the world of Konknni music within one or
even a series of newspaper articles. Permit me,
though, to reminisce a bit.

Half a century ago, when I was a child, Konknni was shunned
both in schools and in upper class homes. Konknni, our
identity and heritage, thrived on the laps of the red
lateritic soil of the central of Parashurama's seven
Konkanas. Our ancestors made that identity bud, bloom and
blossom. Konknni writers, musicians and songsters kept the
language going.

Some have chronicled Goa's film and stage music. Andrew Greno
Viegas, who fell to cancer at 40 last year, was among them.
Between his lab assistant's job, he collected memorabilia of
Konknni song, wrote, and brought out the book titled 50 Years
of Konknni Cinema (2000). He worked at building an
encyclopaedia of recorded Konknni music.

There is the almost self-effacing Bonaventure
D'Pietro of Anjuna. He not only writes copiously --
his Songit, Doulot Goenkaranchi (2004) is a
treasure -- but plays and produces Konknni music as
well.

We have our own inimitable storyteller, Mario Cabral e S?,
who, between his many books, edited Location Goa (2006).
Another journo Frederick Noronha has pointed out that this
State-sponsored volume lacks adequate exposure. Selling
books, even one as good as Mario de Sa's, I reckon, would not
fetch our ministers the kickbacks that outsourcing deals do.

TIATRO : A CRITICAL STUDY - [Ph.D. Thesis by Andre Rafael Fernandes]

TIATRO : A CRITICAL STUDY
[Ph.D. Thesis by Andre Rafael Fernandes]

Abstract

The study traces the development of Tiatro from its various origins.
Whereas the general impression is that this dramatic form began in 1892 in Bombay, the thesis traces Tiatro?s genesis to the traditional Zagors and Khells which have evolved over several centuries from ancient performances.

The study documents available references from the earliest Portuguese plays in Goa. The developments in Music and Song [both Indian and Western] are tracked and their integral functions in Tiatros is indicated. The research accounts for variations in the spelling of Tiatro and studies diverse aspects such as Genres, Thematic concerns, Phases of growth, Structure, use of language, roles of actors, women, set designing, lighting, innovations, stage management, publicity, censorship, limitations and audience participation, etc.

The thesis gives due credit to, and highlights the contribution of Joao Agostinho Fernandes, rightly regarded as Pai Tiatrist the 'Father of Tiatro'. Several of his major plays are analysed and their impact assessed. Joao Agostinho is found to be not just an excellent ground-breaking playwright but also a forceful votary of social
reform.

An important contribution of this research is the innovative documentation of Joao Agostinho's manuscripts, handbills, brochures, news clippings, reviews and related items in his collection. He is also presented as a role model for Tiatrists of all times.

Hundreds of Tiatrists have kept audiences enthralled for thousands of performances in Goa, Mumbai and elsewhere. On any given weekend during the theatrical season, at least ten shows are held in various parts of Goa.

While justice cannot be done to all the Tiatrists, in a study of the present type, an attempt is made to briefly analyse the published plays of nine other playwrights. These are : Aleixinho de Candolim, A.R. Souza Ferrao, Kid Boxer, J. P. Souzalin, C. Alvares, Remmie J. Colaco, John Claro Fernandes, Prem Kumar and M. Boyer.

A list of Tiatrists is also appended.

Issues, Problems and Challenges in Contemporary Tiatro are discussed in the study. In spite of the general apathy of official / government bodies and the onslaught of cable television and alternative forms of entertainment, it is seen that Tiatro has so far managed to hold its ground as the premier form of staged entertainment for Konkani speakers.

Ever since Antonio Piedade Moraes innovated the path-breaking transformation of the ground based khells ?to stage performances of Khell-Tiatr and the subsequent evolution of the Non-Stop Drama, Tiatro has been enthused with new life and dynamism.

With the gradual decline of the Tiatro production in Mumbai and corresponding spurt in formation of Goan troupes, theatrical activities have resurged. Tiatros entertain not just local audiences but also perform for the benefit of emigrants elsewhere in India, the Middle East, London and Toronto.

Developments in communication technologies such as the Internet permit the Goan diaspora to be aware of the contemporary artistes and performances. Considering all its inherent strengths, Tiatro has an assured future as a medium of entertainment, education and social transformation.

Tiatrs and society

Tiatrs and society

One fine Sunday, I attended a tiatr. It was well directed
and conveyed a very good message. But what disappointed me
was that a duet was sung criticising a priest who preached
against women wearing jeans and tight outfits while
attending the Holy Eucharist in Church.

This singer sends a wrong message by saying that dress is
not important, but only faith in God is enough. As our
Blessed Virgin Mary warned in 1917 at Fatima in Portugal,
more souls go to hell because of sins of the flesh than
for any other reason.
I humbly request tiatrists to compose good songs and
encourage the priests who have the guts to stand and
preach correctly.

"Police 2" Tiatr in Oman - “Wow! What a show!”

"Police 2" Tiatr in Oman - “Wow! What a show!”

“Wow! What a show!” was the unanimous response of the Goans in Oman as they left the Ruwi Church Hall on the early morning of 12th June 2009.

The event - Goan Tiatr ‘Police2’ - written and directed by comedian Augustine, was presented by GCO . All the actors and musicians had been specially flown in all the way from Goa.

As expected, it was a houseful show and everyone present thoroughly enjoyed every moment on the hilarious show.

Before the show, Mr. Anthony Lourence, the GCO Coordinator for Cultural activities welcomed everyone and introduced the director, Mr. Augustine, who was welcomed with a thunderous applause. Anthony thanked GCO President Mr. Flynn de Lima for his generous and continuous support, the Vice-President Mr. Celso Fernandes for providing accommodation to the visitors, Mr. Baltazar Fernandes for the sound system, and a word of special thanks to Mr. Anthony Goes and Mr. Thomas Fernandes of the Al Hosni Group for sponsoring the visas . Mr. Celso presented a memento, as a token of appreciation, to Mr. Anthony Goes and Mr. Thomas Fernandes.

Mr. Augustine then requested the audience to stand and observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the departed soul of the great Goan Tiatrist M. Boyer, who breathed his last on 30th May in Goa. Later on in the show, Mr Oswy Viagas , a well known Goan composer sang a song in honor of M. Boyer.

The curtain then opened to a melodious opening song by Joaquim Cabral. It was then 3 hours of non-stop peels of laughter all the way to the comedy of Selvi and the director himself.

The main story itself included a very well written script, inter woven with introspective social awareness messages in honor of the police services. The show was well complemented by melodious songs by various artist s on different topics: one specially praising liquor baron Vijay Mallaya for saving Mahatma Gandhi’s relics from leaving the Indians shows. Our local talent Mr. Louis Gomes, well seconded by his younger brother Mr. Rocky Gomes, added special colour to the show with a well composed song highlighting the degeneration of Christians values in our Churches.

Just towards the end, an emotional and highly excited Augustine appeared on the stage and profusely thanked the Goans in Oman for turning up in great numbers, and for their excellent support. He and his troupe were specially appreciative of Mr. Anthony Lourence and his Ghanv Bhavs Louis and Rocky who spared no effort whatsoever to ensure this success of this event and hospitality to the tiatrists. Mr. Augustine also thanked Mr. Celso for the fine accommodation “ Wow! what a house!” and the GCO for the rucheck Goanche jevon, cooked and supplied by Rosy and Kevin.

The GCO wishes Mr. Augustine and his artistes every success in the present Gulf tour, UK and Insha Allah the New Zealand trips and the all the best in the future endeavors.

The GCO also thanks the following:
- Ruwi Parish Priests and office bearers.
- Mr. Anthony Goes and Mr Thomas Fernandes for arranging visas through Majan Hotel
- Mr. Celso Fernandes for arranging the accommodation for the visiting troupe
- Mr. Baltazar Fernandes and Talentz for the sound and lights
- Mr. Rocky Gomes for arranging the trip and liaising with the troupe
- Mr. E Perry and Mr Noel Rodrigues for the stage settings.

Renowned Tiatrist Artiste Lucas Fernandes is no more

Lucas Fernandes is no more

Lucas Fernandes, a renowned tiatr artiste of yester years expired under tragic circumstances on 16th June 2009 at Colva, Goa.

Mr. Fernandes served the tiatr stage when there were no female artistes available to participate in Tiatrs. He acted female roles with precision and won the hearts of tiatr goers. His capability in portraying effectively the characters of a young girl, a middle aged mother, or a daughter or a daughter – in law, etc helped the writers and directors of tiatr of that time to produce tiatrs on various themes. He was a very good singer too and in singing also he mostly acted female roles only. In fact he contributed immensely in his own way to the development of Tiatr in the 1940s and 1950s.

In the beginning of the 1960s he migrated to Beira for better prospects and hence could not continue his acting on the tiatr stage. Some years back he returned to Goa. His contribution to tiatr staged was recognized by the Goa Government when he was felicitated by Shri. Digamber Kamat, Chief Minister of Goa on the occasion of the inauguration of the Tiatr Academy of Goa on 16th February 2009.

Tiatr Academy of Goa condoles the sudden death of this versatile tiatr artiste, conveys our condolences to his family and prays to the Almighty to grant him the eternal peace.

The Tiatr Academy Goa now well over 100 days since its inception has invited all tiatr artists, writers, directors, actors, singers, those involved in back stage works such as stage setting light effects background music constumes make-up professionals and musicians assisting tiatrs etc to attend its first meeting on 17th June 2009 at 4.00 p.m. sharp at the Conference Hall of Ravindra Bhavan Margao according to an advertisement released on the local English daily today by the Member Secretary TA-Goa to give valuable suggestions for the effective functioning of the TA-Goa.

This writer has been interacting with several of those connected with the tiatrs and during such interactive meets the undermentioned suggestions need to be considered.

The Tiatr Academy Goa constituted on 6th January, 2009 by the Government of Goa was clearly with a rider that the OLA 1987 would not be tampered with the demand at a above and hence appears to be a favour done to the Tiatrist and tiatr lovers and not as a legitimate fulfillment of a long pending requirement.

Thus there can be no comprise on the legitimate demand of Goans for grant of official recognition to Konkani in the English script by amending the OLA 1987 as the topmost priority. Once this is achieved it follows as corollary that the State Government must give budgetary support and not mere financial “assistance “ as doles as at present.

The Tiatr Academy Goa should
- look out for an individual who is young, dynamic, apolitical, has administrative acumen, and above all has the ability to unite the tiatrists.

- have its own website, blog, online facility email and network with similar other websites so as to act as a repository of anything and everything related to tiatr

- create a data base of all the tiatrist and those connected with the tiatr right from 1871. The data can be classified broadly in four categories a) before Independence 1947, b) before Liberation 1961 c) post Liberation 1967 and d) post Statehood 1986 . Care should be taken to include those outside Goa as well

- ensure that portraits of Lucacinho Ribeiro, Joao Agostinho Fernandes (Pai Tiatrist) and Maria Regina Fernandes adorn the office of the Tiatr Academy Goa – Office, and their photographs are prominently displayed on all advertisements released by the Tiatr Academy Goa.

- constitute subcommittees consisting of office bearers of the TA-Goa and other well meaning citizens within and outside Goa to collate, disseminate, information and to advance the scope of performance of tiatr artists, writers, directors, actors, singers, those involved in back stage works such as stage setting light effects background music constumes make-up professionals and musicians assisting tiatrs

- commemorate posthumously tiatrists who have contributed immensely to sustain this unique performing art in most difficult times and unsavoury circumstances which has sustained this ever growing cultural to this day;

- collaborate with other private tiatr academies or cultural bodies world wide to promote tiatr

- demand for recognition of tiatr and related activities as an industry so as to enhance the scope of funds and run the same on sound financial standings to attract people to dedicate themselves full time into the tiatr

- constitute a wage panel to decide pay perquisites and provide for social security on superannuation and a solatium for next of kin of deceased tiatr personnel.

- seek financial grants from the Ministry of Art and Culture and Govt of India and Department of Art and Culture Government of Goa for musical instruments , pensions for musicians and others connected with the trade an d also for the benefit of the next of kin.

- upgrade the standards of performance presentation stage setting using present day acoustics and electronic setting etc without destroying creativity and originality to attract the audiences of varied social backgrounds and make tiatrs acceptable to those other than the traditional audiences.

- microfilm all original scripts of tiatrists of yester-years and preserve for posterity original ones either in public or private museums

Preserve the “House of Pai Tiatrist” at Modsai Margao alongwith his personal effects his original scripts works etc .. ( on the lines of Rabindranath Tagores Shantinilketan abode at Kolkatta, West Bengal ) for posterity and for future generations to see.

Decentralise its working preferably taluka wise by setting up liason centres / contact desks in private offices /homes etc with business communication facilities for efficient networking with the Tiatr Academy Goa headquarter and to avoid tiatrist etc visits to headquarters for works related to TA Goa.

Form a youth wing for tiatrists and others under an independent youth leader to pursue the tiatr mission.

Prepare a film on late Padmashree M Boyer for his unique contribution to tiatr.

Constitute a committee to assist creating the DVD, VCDs of tiatrs to enhance their quality and viewing standards for audiences of all ages and to avoid piracy

It is hoped that the others too will send in suggestions views etc to the Tiatr Academy Goa Chairman.

M. Boyer’s Death Condoled by Tiatr Academy of Goa

M.Boyer’s Death Condoled

M.Boyer’s death has caused a vacuum on the Tiatr stage of Goa because in his death the tiatr stage has lost an excellent artiste, the society a concerned citizen and Goa a son who made Goa proud not only in India but abroad too, said Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa.

Speaking at the condolence meeting on 9th instant at the Conference Hall of Ravindra Bhavan Margao, Mr. Cardozo said that it will be very difficult to fill the vacuum created in the death of M. Boyer.

Tiatr Academy and the challenges ahead

Tiatr Academy and the challenges ahead

Written by Daniel F. de Souza

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has delivered on his promises made to the tiarist fraternity. The fact that the Tiatr Academy was to be set up for the betterment and development of tiatr which a unique form of performing Art was doing the rounds for quite sometime, and finally now that it is here, work has to begin with right earnest. Tomazinho Cardozo, the founder of Kala Mogi, Candolim, and a renowned tiatr personality, lyricist, Playwright and director who has a vast experience in tiatrs has been rightfully appointed as the President to head the Academy. The other members of the Tiatr Academy nominated by the Government are; Sharon Mazarello, Marcelino de Betim, Rose Ferns, Prince Jacob, Premanand Sangodkar, Mario Pereira, Joe Rose, Jessie Dias, Mike Mehta and Fr. Neville Gracias.

The body so far constituted seems to be well balanced with renowned Playwrights, directors, senior actors who have done yeoman service to the Konkani stage over the years. The induction of two senior ladies Sharon Mazarello and Jessie Dias on the Academy not only adds glamour but will surely lend a balanced voice to the body. Fr. Nevel L. Gracias {Vell’lekar) a clergyman who has enriched the Konkani stage with his several educative and thought provoking religious tiatrs with regularity also finds a place so deserving on the panel.

Now that the Tiatr Academy has been constituted, there is no time to waste. There is lot that needs to be done in this sphere of ‘Tiatr’. Tomazinho has a well defined task on hand, and knowing his commitment, a sound experience coupled with a sound knowledge of the subject I have no doubt he will shoulder the responsibility well, provided he gets the unstinted support and co-operation of the other members on the panel. Tomazinho Cardozo, has many progressive ideas up his sleeve as to how the professional Konkani stage should move towards a better future. However, all depends how the others in the group accept his ideas and work together keeping aside personal agenda for a better tomorrow.

While the Aim, Objectives and Scope of this Academy is still not very clear, but suffice to say, its main objective will be to provide maximum benefit to the Konkani stage and the artists and see to its overall progress and growth with a genuine touch of professionalism. In order to achieve the objectives, the first and foremost step Tomazinho will perhaps have to initiate is to bring the two factions of the artists together burying all their differences. It is a known fact that there are noticeable cracks within the Tiatrist fraternity, and this is one major stumbling block to move forward with a progressive vision. Difference of opinions, jealousy, egoism, pride, enmity, and backbiting has been the major causes of disunity among artistes on the Konkani stage. If Tomazinho can achieve their unity within the shortest possible time, half the battle is won. In order to achieve success in any endeavour unity is a must to move forward, disunity can prove to be a constraint for the success of any venture.

Now that the Tiatr Academy is established there is no doubt Tiatr a unique performing art will get a major boost in the State. The full potential of this art can be fully exploited to take it to great heights provided all concerned work with a single minded purpose and genuine sincerity. The Academy should have a focus in mind and should not deviate from it. It is not only the responsibility of the President and the members on the panel, but a collective responsibility of all the professional tiatrist to work for the success of the Academy.

The Tiatr Academy will have to play a major role in improving the standard of the Goan Tiatr and make it even more attractive to the masses specially the Goan youth with a modern mindset who are still not drawn to the Konkani theatre as much as they are drawn to the Bollywood films and English theatre. This I know is not a simple task. But a beginning has to be made. Tomazinho and his enlightened team will have to seriously consider several aspects of the tiatr such as Script writing, direction, production, stage settings, lighting, music, other technical aspects such as the use of modern technology for better presentation etc in order to raise the standard of tiatrs. More professionals in various departments of the art have to enter the scene in order to improve the overall image of present day Tiatr.

Playwrights who are successful in their ventures and boasts of staging 50 plus performances of their shows should be encouraged and made liable to publish the tiatr script in book form for the benefit of youngsters who wish to follow in their footsteps. There is a general complaint from several playwrights that now-a-days tiatrs are no longer profitable in terms of financial returns considering the expenditure involved in producing a play. Apart from a few established playwrights, many other have to do a tight rope walk in order to survive. Giving them the benefit of doubt, the Academy should genuinely study these grievances and come out with solutions to support the artists. One immediate step could be in enhancing the entrance ticket presently priced at Rs. 60/- which in these inflationary times appears to be on the lower side.

The tiatr fraternity has been for long time now demanding that the Government should accord it the ‘Industry Status’, the Academy will do well to study this demand in detail and prepare a feasibility report and submit it to the Government for necessary action. After all Tiatr is a major aspect of our Goan Culture having a large fan following not only in Goa but wherever Goans have settled to earn their bread and butter and one can’t expect it to lag behind, but on the contrary it has to march ahead and achieve greater heights in years to come.

Tiatr Academy and the Challenges Ahead
written by generio, January 15, 2009

I hope Daniel's expectations of what the Tiatr Academy should achieve come true. It's important that different factions, though Daniel talks of "two factions", in the tiatr community should come together for a common cause -- to improve the standard. If one goes by past records, tiatrists don't join hands to fight together because, as Daniel points out, there are egos and personal agendas.
Let's take the case of a young Goan who wants to be a professional tiatrist. He/she joins the academy and then graduates into a professional actor. Would he/she get enough money from the stage to make a decent living? In the current situation and possibly in the near future I doubt so.
I have seen many "professional" tiatrists in Mumbai in the 1960s and 70s struggle to make ends meet. Some of them even borrowed money. Maybe the "rate" for doing a character role has gone up now, and possibly many, at least Goa-based tiatrists, are dependent solely on the stage for their livelihood. Oldtimers such as M. Boyer and Jacinto, to mention but just wo, could survive because they charged higher rates and also acted in many tiatrs, often one following the other, because they drew in audiences.
Since Sharan Mazarello is part of the executive board and she and husband Wilson ran, or even runs, an acting school, I would like to know how many of their students are full-time professional tiatrists.
Are there professional trainers to guide and train the students? Would the academy be like the National School of Drama in Delhi or the National Film Institute in Pune?
Daniel has said that the Aims and Objectives of this new body are "not very clear" I would like him to post them on this forum.
To echo Daniel's sentiment, though I do it with a heavy heart, the youth are not enamoured of the Konknni stage. From observing the current trend and having attended some tiatrs in Goa, I can say that the youth do not patronize the tiatr as much as they do Hindi and English films. I am not sure how much the English stage appeals to them, but I believe the English stage is progressing steadily in Goa.
I will not comment on the current standard of the tiatr because I have not see many of them. But from the few I have seen, I am doubtful if the Konknni stage has progressed in comparison to the state it was when I was a regular at tiatrs in Mumbai in the 1960s upto the 1981.
Surely, the challenges ahead are a lot. It would take a lot of effort to prop up the Konknni stage to a standard we could be proud of.

I tune in to AIR FM in the mornings as my mom who is 87 is eager to hear the Konkani songs. When I broke the news to her of her favourite M Boyer's death, she was sad. However, I consoled her by telling her that her favourite FM radio will oblige her with M Boyer's songs today as a mark of respect to his long innings.

Sad to say that what was aired was just some unusual trash enough to make me shut off the radio with disgust.

Cheers to M Boyer.
Goa and Goans will never miss him.

It is indeed sad to hear about the death of MBoyer. He was a great composer and his play always had social themes. Ekuch rosto brought unity between religions, sounsar sudorlo, Bhurgim bangar are some of the plays I can remember of his. He could compose songs at any moment of time even when he would be on the stage. He was a very simple man and never showed pride while moving with junior artist. He would respect other people . I was lucky to have acted with him in some of the tiatros of Fr.Freddy da Costa, Mike Mehta and he even acted in my own play "Nirmon " when I had stagged in the school where I was teaching. In his death the state has lost one of the great artist .Our sincere sympathies with the family who always were with him when ever he staged his own plays. May his soul rest in peace

Goan Artist who was honored by the Highest Cultural Body of the Country with the
Sangeet Natok Acakemy Award. The Government of India also recognized the contribution of Shri M. Boyer by bestowing on him the Prestigious Padmashri. The Government of Goa too honored Shri M. Boyer with the Goa State Cultural Award.

He wrote, directed and acted in numerous Tiatrs, but his Tiatr Ekuch Rosto will
go down the history of Goa for creating an atmosphere of communal harmony among
the two major communities of Goa.

Tiatr Academy of Goa conveys its condolences to his wife and children and prays
to the almighty that his soul rests in peace.

Tiatr Academy of Goa

A Respectful Tribute to M. Boyer

A Respectful Tribute to M. Boyer

Goans from all walks of live and across all spans of age,
were acquainted with the name of M. Boyer. His forays on the stage, with his
characteristic gestures would stir the audience to giggle and wriggle, while
his lyrics would entertain, nay invite one to introspect deep into one’s
conscience.

He was conscious of the fact that “Sounsar Sudhorlo” does
beg the “Ponn” (but/yet) of customs, habits and un-reflected superstitions. It
was the “Ponn” that cast shadow upon and veiled the progress. He conscientised
his audience that progress should impact all facets of life and existence. The
world mourns a ‘tiatrist’ and a singer, in the passing away of M. Boyer.

But, every genuine Goan mourns a genuine son of the land,
whose concern was “Aplo Ganv [Goa]” and “Apli
Bhas [Konkani],” as revealed to us in his first cassette, “Golden Goa.” His
concern for his land (Aplo Ganv) was profound and deep-seated, as he sings,
“Goa xhar amchem, uzvaddachem mannik tem,
teachem sudharop kel’lem tor odik porzollit zatem. Ponn Goa xhar pokrun
bhitorleam kelam ritem.. Magir Goykara fuddar amcho kitem?” He lamented
that “Ami goykar fokot sirvisoch korunk
urle, amcheam xikloleam bhurgeank bhailea ganvanim dhaddle. Goyam, bhailo lok
ieun karkannem bhandlet vhoddle. Atam goykaramnim tanche nokor zaumche poddle.”
Decades ago, he cautioned us, “Goa mannik
dovlotichem… ponn konn nokllo kitem zait Goa
xharachem.” He provoked us to realize that “Goa bhitorlean pokorlam, fokot
suropaien urlam. Atam goykaramnim urlolem
samballpachem.” Therefore he suggested a dual approach, “Ami goykar ekvott
ghoddun, soglle goyche
dongor foddun, chinttat re min tem goyant koddoupachem,” and “Goyam kakhanne
bandhat re, sirviso goykarank diat re, ani goyant dovrat bhangar goykaranchem.”
In view of this, he boldly exhorted the young minds, “dekhun engineer zaiat re,
Goyam karkhanne bandhat re, nam tor lok
bandhun goychi girestkai vhortole.”

His Goanness made him appeal to Goans to cherish their
mother-tongue Konkani and to spare no pains to promote it. His concern was to
make Konkani the binding force of Goans, irrespective of religion, caste or
whatever. It was seen by him as the true and visible sign of our Goanness. The
neglect of Konkani he prophesied could lead to the doom of the land and its
entity, when he sang “Ami khoinche te
sangonk ghuspotole ami, Goykar sanddtole zorui sandot tor Konkani.” He
reflected that the consequences of not giving Konkani its due importance would
be catastrophic by stating that “ami
sanddtole sandlli zalear amchi bhas Konkani.”

He was firmly convinced that the Goan identity was deeply
ingrained in our language and vice-versa. That is why he exhorted “amchem
goykarponn rakhonk samballat Konkani.”

It is worthy to note that Goans, irrespective of political
party affiliations, creed or other differences are mourning the loss of the
great man, M. Boyer.

Lest we carve a niche for him just in the portals of
artistes, I would suggest that we look at his contribution, not only as a
performer/actor and singer, but moreover, as a social activist and reformer and
give him due recognition.

He has received the prestigious “Padma Bhushan” for his
artistic talent. We Goans still owe him our recognition, by making his dreams
and aspirations for Goa and Goan identity our
vocation. The only reward we can offer him is to assure that we live on his
legacy: A legacy of dedication to “Aplo Ganv [Goa]”
and “Apli Bhas [Konkani].”

Our politicians and those at the helm of decision making
process and governance should develop a guilt conscience and, a firm resolve to
protect the Goan identity. A guilt conscience, that they have not done enough
to avert the exploitation of “Aplo Ganv,” rather that they have voluntarily
blessed it, for their own gains. A guilt conscience that they have politicized
the language issue, neglecting the serious ramifications it has to our Goan
identity. Thus, they should evolve a firm resolve to truly honour this great
son of the soil by working to save whatever is left of Goa
for Goans and by safeguarding our Goanness by promoting Konkani. The “special
status” for Goa and a resolution to promote Konkani (in Devnagiri and Roman
script) could only be a starting point on the long and arduous journey of
reclaiming Goa and Goanness. Although late, it
is better late than never…

If we fail in promoting his project, then we will be living
under the condemnation of “Sounsar Sudhorlo, PONN…” This is a baton he has
handed over to each of us who pride to be Goans… A baton to be like him, true
and dedicated Goans…

May the soul of M. Boyer rest in peace, yet leave all of us
Goans, RESTLESS till we pledge ourselves wholeheartedly, and strive undauntedly
to work to achieve what was so dear to his heart... A Golden Goa.

M.Boyer - An Institution of Tiatr Faternity

Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) condoled the death of Manuel Santana Aguiar, Padmashree M.Boyer. The condolence meeting was held on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 8.00 pm at Royal Terrace, Salmiya, Kuwait - a day after M.Boyer's mortal remains were laid to rest in Goa by hundreds of mourners, predominantly from the tiatrist faternity, tiatr lovers, and Goans from all ways of life.

The sorrowful tiatrists in attendance to pay their tribute to M. Boyer were senior tiatrist & KGTS President Francis Fernandes de Verna, Manuel de Santa Cruz, Querobina Carvalho, Cajetan de Sanvordem, Filipe Pereira (Comedian Philip), Nelson Collaso, Sylvester Vaz, Irene Cardozo e Vaz, Mario de Majorda, Gracy Morais, Laurente Pereira, Clara Rodrigues, Joseph Rodrigues, Cajie Fernandes de Benaulim, Anthony Carr, Martinho Martins, Laurie Miranda, Milagres Cardozo, and Dominic Araujo.

M. Boyer is an institution of tiatr said senior tiatrist Cajetan de Sanvordem, he was lovingly known as ‘Irmao’ within the tiatr fraternity, his popularity had no limit, so much so that even the normal mail by post received by him only read ‘M. Boyer – Goa’.

Sylvester Vaz said M. Boyer was a father figure for today's tiatrists, he was one of the greatest artist Konkani stage ever produced. His personality was outstanding and tremendous traveler; one will not find in books what he has in his mind to keep busy through out your journey.

Senior artist Querobina Carvalho broke down in tears while sharing her personal experience with M.Boyer. His tiatr ‘MOG KAZAR DIVORCE’ propelled her to visit Gulf countries for the very first time. She praised M. Boyer's wife Martha for all her love and supreme sacrifices towards her husband while he was bedridden.

Manuel de Santa Cruz said the then Emiraso de Goa (All India Radio) made M. Boyer's each and every song a memorable hit, to name a few ‘GOENCHE CONVENT’ , ‘BHURGIM KONNACHIM’, etc, M.Boyer's Padmashree was not decorated by tiatrists the way industrialists and others political figures are getting more attention.

Dominic Araujo refined on Padmashree giving example of two horses, one white and the other one black, both have to carry out same task yet the owner showers praises for the white color horse, M. Boyer's each and every tiatr was educative ‘KELEAR CHUK KOBAR SUKH’, ‘EKUCH ROSTO’, ‘GHOR DUKHI GAUM SUKHI’, ‘SOUNSAR SUDORLO’ etc, to name a few.

Gracy Morais spoke on the achievement of M.Boyer, Francis de Verna scaled M.Boyer as the greatest composer, singer, actor, writer and director, and he also shared his personal experience with M.Boyer in Bombay (Mumbai) at Princess Theatre and Bhangwadi. Mario de Majorda prayed that Almighty God may grant Eternal Rest to the departed soul.

As a tribute to one of the most famous tiatrist, Querobina Carvalho dedicated one verse chorus of his hit song ‘IXTTAGOT’ where in all the assembled tiatrists joined in to her sobbing voice.
