Konkani Tiatr "Him Tujim Pavlam" touches ‘super hit’

"Him Tujim Pavlam" touches ‘super hit’

Mark among UK tiatr lovers!
June 6th 2009, witnessed a new era for the Konkani Stage in UK under the auspices of Konkani Dramatic Association, UK . That day they staged the tiatr called Him Tujim Pavlam.

The unique, novel script portrays a conflux of ideas. The script is crisp with intricately woven outstanding dialogues and humorous comedy.

Poignant Plot: Him Tujim Pavlam highlights the mindset of the immigrants to Europe. Romald (Michael) and Betty (Mary), the Goan couple settled in UK try to enlighten their only daughter Merlyn (Meryln) against her blind pursuit of aping the English lifestyle. They realistically reproach her that her origin remains unchanged even under the alien mask. Alvaro played as her father-in-law. The protagonist is a woman of substance - a trustworthy wife, a caring daughter-in-law and a valiant lady who copes with the final stages of cancer. The tactful Sarah devises a plan to unite Floyd with Merlyn under the guise of them both sharing an intimate friendship. Hence, her untimely death would not leave a void in the family. But, the doctor unveils the illness which exposes Sarah to be a woman both “Bold and Beautiful” in her deathbed.

Cast Performance: Jr. Nelson gave marvelous performances both as an actor and singer. His powerful solo on M. Boyer was a class of its own.
Felcy gave a stellar performance as Sarah Floyd’s (Junior Nelson) wife who strives to bring back the lost glory after the demise of her mother-in-law. However, her dreams are shattered when she is diagnosed as having cancer.
The comedy by Luis Bachan, Joana, Victor de Verem, Judy and after all comedian Santan was a blast. It was a laugh riot. They were swift and compact in their presentation. Vow!

Kudos to comedian Santan who staged his maiden Konkani drama- a suspense thriller, that was offset with hilarious comedy the melodious and poignant title song Him Tujim Pavlam at Crydon, Swindon and Wembley to a capacity crowd. The show was unanimously applauded as hit.

Melodious Music: Another main reason for the great response that Him Tujim Pavlam was given can be attributed to the man in the foreground- James Vaz, the Band Leader. An aesthetic musician, he produced the original music that harmoniously blended with his fellow musicians Francis (bass), Babit (lead) and Polly (drums). The interlude set the tone and time for the performers and the background score filled in the sound effects. The music simply motivated the singers and inspired the listeners. Adding to this euphoria was the Drum Solo by (Polly) which was the brain child of the band leader himself. This was efficiently and creatively supported by the brilliant stage setting and light effects by Jhonny Damaciano and Francis.

So, hats off to Santan who dared to break through new barriers and create a niche for him. The super hit was not based just on the characterization but the very concept of the drama. The whole performance driven troupe displayed a standard and quality through this innovative talent. This has definitely raised the hopes for the Konkani Stage for further development and a long standing for the future in the UK.

Schemes and Activities of Tiatr Academy Goa for 2009 – 2010.

Tiatr Academy of Goa
Panaji – Goa

Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) addressed the Goa Press on 3rd July, 2009 in order to announce about the schemes and activities of the TAG for the financial year 2009 – 2010.

The details are as under:

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) was officially inaugurated on 16th Februray, 2009 by the Hon. Chief Minister of Goa, Shri. Digamber Kamat. Soon after the inauguration, Code of Conduct due to Parliamentary Election was announced by the Election Commission of India. Government could not transfer any funds to TAG and the TAG could not do any activities. It is only when the Code of Conduct was lifted by the Election Commission in the month of May, the TAG started functioning.

A meeting of all Tiatr artistes of Goa was also convened and their views were also taken for planning for the year 2009 - 2010

The activities planned for the year 2009 – 2010 are as follows:

(i) Documentation of the history of Tiatr
(a) TAG has resolved to document the history and experiences in the
field of Tiatr by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers,
directors, actors, singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light
effects, background music, etc. etc. on VCDs and DVDs.

(b) It was also resolved to document the history of tiatr by publishing books
on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics related to Tiatr,
its song and music.

(ii) Encouragement to production of Tiatr in villages
TAG has resolved to formulate a scheme to promote tiatr activities in the villages among the children and youth by giving them the required financial and technical support. Institutions / groups / dramatic troupes / etc interested in promoting Tiatr culture among the children/youth in the villages can take benefit of this scheme. The participating children/youth must be the residents of that village and their age should not exceed 20 years. Maximum of five senior artistes from the same village will be permitted to act in that tiatr.

(iii) Promotion of Tiatr through educational institutions
TAG felt that the students in the schools and colleges must be made aware of the Goan traditional Tiatr – its history and its importance in the Goan society. Therefore it has been resolved to formulate a scheme to promote Goan Tiatr through schools, colleges and other educational institutions by organizing seminars, lectures, etc. for the students of educational institutions.

(iv) Raising the standard of Tiatr
(a) Improvement of the standard of Tiatr in all respects is the need of the hour. Therefore TAG has unanimously resolved to organize orkshops/seminars, etc on various aspects of Tiatr such as Script writing, Acting, Direction, Light Effects, Stage Setting, Back Ground music, etc. by inviting knowledgeable resource persons in theatre art from other languages. It has also been decided that TAG may collaborate with any other institution/organization while conducting these seminars/workshops, etc.
(b) Another way to learn more about theatre art and to improve the standard of tiatr is
to witness high standard dramas from other languages and gain more knowledge
about the new trends in modern theatre. Therefore TAG has resolved to encourage
tiatr artistes to witness high standard dramas in other languages which are staged in
Goa by providing them the required incentives.

(v) Preservation of Tiatr literature
Tiatr literature needs to be preserved for posterity. This can be done by publishing books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores, etc. Therefore TAG has resolved to publish books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores, etc.

(vi) Promotion of Tiatr music
The TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing instruments such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day and that these two instruments are very important in the music of the Tiatr. In view of this the TAG has resolved to formulate a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance.

(vii) Reaching out to Goans all over the world
TAG is of the opinion that Tiatr Academy of Goa should reach out to Goans living in different parts of the world through internet and through other modern means of mass communication. Hence TAG has resolved to create a Web-site of Tiatr Academy of Goa giving detailed information of TAG and its activities.

(viii) Promotion of Award Winning Tiatr
Kala Academy, Goa organizes Tiatr Festivals every year in Panjim only. But the producers and directors of award winning tiatrs have no opportunity to stage these award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa. Inspite of having a good standard these plays do not attract large audience because they have mostly amateur artistes. Therefore TAG has resolved to organize festivals of first three award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa so that the people from other parts of Goa too have the opportunity to witness these tiatrs. It is also decided to organize these festivals in collaboration with other institutions in case such institutions come forward to organize it.

(ix) Remembering Tiatr artistes of yester years
Tiatr stage produced great tiatr personalities in the past. These pioneers of tiatr are no more with us. Their contribution to the Goan tiatr is immense. Unfortunately today’s younger generation do not know anything about them.
In order to make our younger generation aware of their contribution and sacrifices the TAG has resolved as under:
(i) To commemorate their jubilee birth anniversaries i.e. 75th , 100th, 125th, etc birth anniversaries by organizing special functions and appropriate programmes.
(ii) To give financial support to troupes/ institutions for producing special programmes on the lives of particular artistes or a programme of the tiatrs staged and songs rendered by those artistes in the past.
(iii) To celebrate the Birth Centenary of A. R. Souza Ferrao TAG has resolved to stage more shows of the tiatr “Gouyo Put” written by late Souza Ferrao, directed by Anil Kumar at Panjim, Mapusa, Ponda, etc. respectively in collaboration of A. R. Souza Ferrao Cultural & Charitable Trust.

(x) Provision of financial assistance to troupes going to Bombay/Poona
Goan Tiatr was born in Bombay. There was a time when the Tiatr culture was more prominent in Bombay than in Goa. Dramatic troupes from Bombay used to come to Goa to stage their tiatrs. In the recent years the scenario has completely changed. There are very few tiatr artistes left in Bombay today. Hence dramatic troupes from Goa go to Bombay and stage their shows in Bombay and Poona. Many a time staging tiatrs in Bombay/Poona by Goan dramatic troupes is not a financially viable proposition.
Therefore TAG has resolved to give financial support to the tune of Rs. 25,000/ - to any dramatic troupe going to Bombay/Poona to stage its tiatrs there provided that at least five shows of the same tiatr are staged during that trip.

(xi) Promotion of Folk Songs
Mando/Dulpods and other folksongs is a part and parcel of our culture. These folksongs have always found place on the tiatr stage. Therefore TAG has resolved to promote Mando/Dulpods and other folk songs by giving incentives to deserving folk artistes and folk troupes.

(xii) Encouragement to Script Writers and Lyricists
In order to encourage the script writers and lyricists to write scripts and lyrics of high standard, TAG has decided to organize literary competitions for Script writing and for Lyrics writings and to give awards for best script and best lyrics writers.

(xiii) Museum & Library
There is a lot of Tiatr material in the form of manuscripts, hand written lyrics, printed books, old HMV records, CDs and DVDs etc, scattered here and there with government authorities as well as with private individuals. Unfortunately required care of this valuable material has not been taken.
Therefore the TAG has resolved to collect this material if possible and preserve it for posterity by establishing a Museum and a library of TAG on a long term basis.

(xiv) Insurance for Tiatr artistes
The TAG felt that many tiatr artistes face a lot of financial problems in case of accidents. Therefore it was resolved to insure all artistes of the Tiatr stage under Group Insurance Cover. Such insurance will be beneficial to tiatr artistes in case of an accidental death or accidental injury takes place.

(xv) Directory of Tiatr artistes
In order to have up to date information about the Tiatr artistes living in and out of Goa TAG has resolved to publish a directory of all Tiatr artistes on priority.
(xvi) ID Cards for Tiatr artistes
There was a request to issue an ID Card to interested Tiatr artiste. TAG has resolved to issue such ID Cards to bonafide Tiatr artistes only.

(xvii) Awards for excellence.
Awards play an important role in the lives of artistes. Those on the stage, if awarded, get encouragement to perform better in future and those who are no more active on the stage feel proud because their contribution to the Tiatr stage is recognized. Therefore the TAG has resolved to institute the following awards:
(a) To give awards in all departments of Tiatr such as acting, direction, singing, script writing, stage setting, light effects, back ground music, etc by organizing a Tiatr festival of commercial tiatrs every year.
(b) To give awards to audio albums of Konkani songs i.e. for the best singers (male & female), for the best lyricist, for the best musician and for the best Audio album.
(c) Life time achievement awards to tiatr artistes of yester years.

(xviii) Formation of Sub-Committees
Numerous sub-committees are formed in order to implement the schemes formulated by TAG. Functioning in full swing will take place after the TAG gets the required staff.

(xix) Office Premises for TAG:
TAG will have Office premises of its own soon. Hon. Chief Minister, Shri. Digambar Kamat has made a provision of 1.5 crores of rupees for the purchase of the premises, to do interior decoration, to purchase office equipment and to purchase a vehicle for TAG. The process for acquiring an office premises to TAG is going on.

Clara - Acted for over 22 years in Roseferns Troupe

Lidvinda Anastasia Clara Correia e Dias, known as Clara
on the Konkani stage, was born in Mumbai on April 14, 1946.

While she was singing for the Cuckoo Band, she was spotted
by a tiatrist Domnick Vaz. Soon the talented singer began performing
in the plays of renowned Konkani tiatrists.

She also acted in Konkani films "Zababdari" and "Moriad".

She has been consistently acting for Roseferns for the last 21 years.

To date she has performed in more than 150 plays. While adressing the audience on behalf of the artists who had been felicitated, Clara thanked the tiatr audience, which she claimed had spurred her to give better pefromances. She said that she was thankful to her understanding parents, who allowed her to participate in the tiatr, at a time when few parents encouraged their daughters to take to acting.

Socorro de Verna

Socorro Pieadade Fremiot Fernandes, popularly known as Socorro de Verna, is a veteran playwright, director and actor in the field of khell tiatr.

In 1962, he peformed "Jungle King" and "Bhattkarachi Choli" in Bombay besides scores of others he staged along with his troupe, particularly at the time of Carnival and Easter.

Several of his plays have been broadcast by All India Radio, Panjim. He has two Konkani novels—"Amchem Noxib" and "Ghatki Bhoinn"—to his credit.

When the cassettes came in fashion, he recorded two dramas "Tannem Mhaka Sambaulem" and "Meutelem" in 1996 and 1997 respectively.

Public Meeting of tiatrists and MLAs

Public Meeting of tiatrists and MLAs

Public Meeting of Tiatrists and MLAs Most of the present MLAs of Goa State assembly have been elected by a substantial number of voters who fully support Roman script for Konknni. Some of these MLAs have expressed their views in private on the issue of including Roman script in the Official Language Act 1987. So far only a few MLAs have publicly voiced their support to this issue.

Therefore, Tiatrists of Goa have now unanimously resolved at a meeting held at Margao today, to invite all the elected representatives of the Goa Legislative Assembly, to attend a public meeting to be convened on Tuesday 25th July 2006 at T. B. Cunha Hall Panaji at 10.30. a.m. to clarify their stand on the demand for amendment to the Official Language Act 1987 wherein the word "/Roman" in section 2(c) will be added. The meeting will be held in the presence of the Press and media.

Tiatrists are of the opinion that the presence of all MLAs is of utmost importance, considering the short time available to introduce a Bill to that effect before the end of the current Assembly Session itself.

Should they fail to avail this opportunity to attend this meet and express their views on this issue at this meeting it will be construed that they are not in favour of the amendment. According to the response of the MLAs, tiatrists will prepare their future course of action to meet their demand. Tiatrists have taken a pledge that they will fight tooth and nail till their demand for including Roman script in the Language Act is achieved.

'Mumbai-based tiatrists ignored'

'Mumbai-based tiatrists ignored'
2 Jun 2009/Times of India (Goa Edition)

MARGAO: Non-recognition of the work of Mumbai-based tiatrists, especially while picking awardees for the Goa State Awards, is great injustice to the
efforts of these artistes, said veteran tiatrist Cyriaco Dias. He was speaking at legendary tiatrist A R Souza Ferrao's birth centenary celebrations at the Ravindra Bhavan in Margao on Monday.

"The work of Mumbai-based tiatrists is never taken into consideration at the Goa State Awards, although their contribution to the development of tiatr is phenomenal," said Dias at the programme organized by A R Ferrao Cultural and Charitable Trust.

While explaining the reason for the same, Tiatr Academy of Goa president Tomazinho Cardozo said, "Non-recognition of these tiatrists is due to the domicile clause. But I admit that it is injustice to the enormous contribution of Mumbai-based tiatrists."

Chief minister Digambar Kamat, who was the chief guest, stated that his government would always work towards recognizing the efforts of the tiatr fraternity in protecting Goa's identity. "The sanctioned amount of Rs 1.5 crore towards the newly formed tiatr academy is a contribution of the state to set up the academy building," he said.

Deputy speaker Mauvin Godinho felt that the directorate of art and culture should play a prime role in recognizing the efforts of tiatrist in preserving Goa's identity.

A website and a book dedicated to Ferrao were also launched on the occasion.

Meet Tiatrist IGNATIUS De XELVON

http://www.avmaroc.com/videos/meet+tiatrist-cLiPVM676qfqZsw.html

IGNATIUS - Making Waves

IGNATIUS de Xelvon from Sanvordem has emerged as a
highly professional artiste on the Konkani stage both
for his acting as well as singing.

Making waves in Kuwait he brought out his first
Konkani album “Liplele Tiatrist” which proved to be a
hit. He attributes the success of his album to Jose
Rod for not only singing two memorable songs but
introducing him to VP Sinari & Co.

Encouraged by the success, Ignatius is all set to
release his second album. Be also featured in Konkani
albums like William de Curtorim’s “Montreancho Rock &
Roll”, Cajetan de Cuurtorim’s “Marekar Acxident” and
“Plane Crash”.

It was at the age of 14 that Ignatius was first
introduced to the Konkani stage. That was in Santan
D’Costa’s tiatr in his native place. From a very young
age, he took to singing and under the guidance of
seniors coupled with hard work, Ignatius turned into
an outstanding singer.

He didn’t stop at that as he soon discovered his
acting talents. He took up acting with professional
actors. His versatility and talents were recognized
outside the Konkani world and he was ‘launched’ on the
Marathi and Hindi stage for his acting in orchestras
and dramas.

His memorable role in Devidas Baba’s play “Ek Full
Doxinchem” where he enacted the character role of
‘Mama’ to a spellbound audience. It was this ‘Mama’
magic that probably propelled him to accept more
character roles before he was recognized as character
actor of repute.

The multi-faceted personality in him has also produced
comedy skits. He did several comedy skits some of them
with veteran Konkani artistes like Hortencio Pereira,
late Greg/Sabina and even Goa’s Charlie Chaplain of
Konkani one and only Jacinto Vaz.

He has acted with stalwarts of Konkani stage like John
Claro’s “Tambdi Mati”, Mike Mehta’s “Politics”, Tony
Car’s “Ordho Kazari”. He appeared as guest artiste for
Prince Jacob’s show where he received accolades and
appreciation.

In Kuwait where he works, Ignatius was declared the
best actor in Simon Gonsalves’s play “Devacho Ghutt
Dev Zanam” in the first ever Konkani One Act Play
Competition organized by 'United Club of Utorda' the
pioneer of such shows in Kuwait and some months ago,
he in another one act play competition organized by
Konkani Heritage Kuwait, Ignatius bagged the first

ABOUT IGNATIUS DE XELVON:
Ignatius de Xelvon - the Konkani stage artiste hails from the village of
Xelvon, Sanvordem and resides in Kuwait for the past several years. Does
this young man require an introduction?

Here I have this artiste, who is all set to give his best once again in
upcoming Konkani one act play competition being organized by United Club of
Utorda. Recently I spoke to Ignatius as to know what makes him to be
devoted to "character acting" and his interest for the Konkani stage.
Ignatius replied:
"Acting is in my blood as I come from theatrical background".

Ignatius was first seen on Konkani stage at the age of eleven in Santan
D'Costa's tiatr held in his native place. As a child he has shown his love
for singing and soon turned into an outstanding singer. Later he took up
acting with professional actors. Besides singing and acting in Konkani
tiatrs his talents and versality were well recognized by others as well and
have acted in Marathi and Hindi stage shows (as part of an orchestra) and
dramas.

His memorable role is in Devidas Baba's play "EK FULL DOXINCHEM" where he
enacted the character role of "MAMA" to a spellbound audience. It was "this
MAMA's magic" which lead him to accept more character roles and then
propelled him to be known as "character actor" of repute. During our
discourse, the question came whether he can do the comedy roles or not? And
once again the answer was "yes". He did numerous comedy skits and side-show
items alongside veteran Konkani stage artistes including Hortencio Pereira,
late Greg (Greg/Sabina fame) and Goa's immortal Charlie Chaplin "late
Jacinto Vaz", etc.

He has acted with the stalwarts of Konkani stage like Mike Metha's
"POLITIC", John Claro's "TAMDI MATI", as well as for Tony Car's "ORDHO
KAZARI" and Milagres de Chandor's "RAKHNO". He is fond of traditional Khell
Tiatr (which are mostly performed on open ground), and he enjoyed acting in
the same for Bernard Cardoz, Salvaldor Alphonso, Martin de Macazana - to
name the few. He appeared as a guest artiste for Prince Jacob's show, where
appreciation and praises were showered for his hard work. To his credit he
has his first Konkani album "LIPLELE TIATRIST" with meaningful songs, and
also featured in others Konkani albums of William de Curtorim's (Montreancho
Rock N Roll), Cajetan de Curtorim's (Marekar Acxident Plane Crash). He
attributes the success of his Konkani album "LIPLELE TIATRIST" to Jose Rod
for not only singing two memorable songs that brought extra nostalgia for
album and is thankful for Jose Rod's kindness in introducing him to "V.P.
Sinari". Alister Miranda wrote in the Gomantak Times "The Sinaris music
label has unleashed yet another hot-selling Konkani audio. This time Sinaris
has backed a relatively unknown Konkani singer Ignatius de Xelvon and his
maiden presentation "Liplele Tiatrist" and the audio does not disappoint. In
fact, pleasant surprises keep jumping our right through".

Ignatius de Xelvon's prowess is infinite and the evidence is United Club of
Utorda (UCU's) First One Act Play Competition held in Kuwait in 2000.
Ignatius was declared "Best Actor" in Simon Gonsalves's play "DEVACHO GHUTT
DEV ZANAM". In KHK-YRC organized one act play competition, Ignatius
surprised and mesmerized all by directing "EK ZADD VODDACHEM" to lift the
"First Prize", "Best character actor (male)", and "Best character actor
(female)", including also a nomination for "Best stage setting". His other
Konkani plays presented at the UCU annual competitions were "Suriak Laglem
Girrann" (1st Prize) and "Ho Pordhes" (3rd Prize).

A shy and soft spoken artiste that he is, gratefully acknowledges "I would
like to convey my special thanks to popular writer-directors for casting me
in tiatrs and my very special thanks to United Club of Utorda. My very
special thanks to the Konkani lovers in Kuwait for accepting me as an
actor". His second Konkani album "KHOREM BANGAR" was dedicated to the
audience who support upcoming artistes on the Konkani stage ? both in Kuwait
and back home in Goa.
