"Goenchim Noketram" in Bahrain

"Goenchim Noketram" in Bahrain

‘Goenchim Noketram’ the cultural and folk group from Goa led by Gina Mascarenhas provided lively entertainment for Goans in Bahrain. The Goan Cultural Traditions of song and dance filled the air at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant Auditorium Bahrain, on October 22, 2009 where the show was held under the patronage of Young Goans Club.

The group comprising of musicians, singers and dancers presented a three hour cultural fiesta of Goan song and dance. The items included Goan Dekni and Fugdi dance. The audience applauded every item presented by the group and the opera musicals in mime and movements on the life style of Xethkamti (farmer), kharvi (fisherfolk) and render (toddytaper) were cheered throughout. The presentations brought back the nostalgic memories of bygone era of Goa.

The group electrified the performances by their originality and depicting the culture old tools relevant to the trade. It was wondrous to see the entire audience joining the singing as the group played some old Goan instrumentals using instruments like ghumot, mandolin, bongos and cymbals. A medley of Hindi, Portuguese, English and Konkani favourites of yester years got many in the crowd on to their feet and were seen dancing and swaying to the beat. The show culminated with traditional mando and dulpods. The group not only won laurels for their song and dance but for the costumes and jewellery they showcased relevant to each presentation.

‘Goenchim Noketram’ the cultural and folk group from South Goa are the award winners at Mando Festivals held all over Goa in 2008 and 2009. The group has also performed at the inaugural ceremony of International Film Festival in November 2008 and at the concluding ceremony of Asia Pacific Conference in October 2008. Goenchim Noketram have toured different parts of India to present their shows and were the main attractions for Goa Day celebrations in Dubai in June 2008.

The show in Bahrain was sponsored by Jet Airways. GR Crasto compered the show and kept the audience spellbound with witty questions on Goan culture, songs and personalities that carried prizes donated by the group ‘Goenchim Noketram’.

Chuk Konnachi - Konkani Tiatro in Toronto - A Review

Chuk Konnachi - Konkani Tiatro in Toronto - A Review

by Silviano Barbosa
Toronto, Canada

Director Marshal Fernandes came out with flying colours with a mind-blowing presentation of his terrific Konkani Tiatr, which was held on October 24th, 2009 at

Etobicoke’s Michael Power High School Hall in Toronto.

With a sold-out audience of over 550, the hall was packed with Konkani aficionados savouring this Konkani Tiatro with heavy doses of Goan Salcete accent and nostalgic moments, and the audience was left with nothing but pure joy, hangama and satisfaction witnessing the beautiful dialogues and comedic delivery of their Konkani language and culture, which fortunately still thrives in this part of the world.

This is the first time that a Konkani Tiatro in Toronto has seen a full house. Incidentally director Marshal Fernandes had another Konkani sold-out show couple years ago. This could be credited to his unique marketing and organization skills that he puts in place keeping a good rapport with the actors as well as the prospective audience.

Toronto being home to more than 20,000 Goans of which at least more than a 1000 speak Konkani at home and claim it as their mother-tongue on the recent census, can very easily deliver 300 hard-core Konkani Goans to attend any Konkani Tiatr. The rest have to be cajoled into it by other means. But this audience loved this Tiatr so much that I can predict they are likely to come back the next time around.

The audience in Toronto this time was very knowledgeable about their Konkani wordage and grammar and were heard to correct the Konkani gender suffixes in a couple of instances. The ticket price of $20 was reasonable and affordable as compared to the 50$ sale price of professional English plays in the city which have variable ticket prices ranging from 50$-100$.

The following list of actors and singers (not in any particular order) gave their best performances to make this Tiatro quite memorable:

Dr. Lucina Pinto (Oh Canada! National Anthem translated into Konkani by Marshal), popular and talented singer/actor JoeVaz, upcoming young singer Rhio Gracias and director/actor/comedian/singer/composer/CD producer Marshal Fernandes (in an ode to Padma Shri M. Boyer), Rhiza Gracias (fantastic acting and singing (canto) performance), Agnelo Gracias as Mama in his best first time comedy performance and as play editor, Marshal as Leitao in his inimitable simple Lollo comedy role, actor/singer Olympio Fernandes, popular guest-singer Jack Fernandes, enthusiastic actor/singer Olavio Da Costa, actor/singer/comedian Tony Da Silva, the impressive personality of character actor/singer Chris Gomes, the free-spirited Bohemian role of Grace Almeida, the imposing fine role of father by Bonfilio Pereira,

the impressive matriarchal role of Yolanda Gracias, the dedicated and tireless Producer/actress/singer Sandra Menezes with her beautiful teenage daughter with a minor acting role, singer Stephanie Menezes, (who sang in a quartet), the sultry and racy performance in comedy by radiant Serah Barbosa in her typical Saxtti Assolna accent, the most popular song “Jinga-Mummy” composed by Marshal and performed with an encore by the duo team of Rhiza Gracias and her petite sister-in-law Sylda Gracias whose debut as an impressive singer on Konkani stage with her dressed-to-kill wardrobe thoroughly jolted the audience, professional singer Ruth Kumar with her gyrating dancing personality and powerful voice almost challenging Lorna's, accomplished beautiful voiced singer Hazel Jacob, actor Benny Pereira and singer Clema, cross-dresser/singer Auggie Pereira, and all the musicians from the Band “Crescendo” - Tony Da Costa, Tony (Organ), Lawry and Manuel, all helpers on and off the stage, stage director AC Pereira(with special award), ticket sellers, Sound with Aggie Rodrigues and of course the prompter Josie Carrasco, complete this merit list.

As an author, I would be remiss if I did not compliment the unknown author of the play.

This year the Audience Applause Metre which rated this Tiatro a '9 out of 10', generated three very dedicated and committed Stars of the Show. My special parabens (congratulations) are extended to all the people involved in this play and especially to these Stars of the Show: Serah Barbosa (as Consu), who was undoubtedly the darling of the audience as witnessed from the whistles, whispers and comments from the audience, Agnelo Gracias for his superb delivery of impeccable Konkani idioms in his slapstick (Mama) comedy and director Marshal Fernandes for his passive and sinister (Leitao) comedy and for putting up a fine overall theatrical performance that will be remembered for years to come.

Finally the audience was just great! I am sure they went home fully pleased with this fine performance! An evening well spent with lots of Goans in a purely Goan ambience in a sussegad sort of way! Thanks all Tiatrists and helpers for making our Day!

Pott-bhor hansun jivak borem dislem! Porot melche fuddlea Tiatrak!

Konkani play brings the house down with laughter
( Oct 30 2009 )

by Silviano Barbosa

Toronto: Director Marshal Fernandes came out with flying colours with a mind-blowing presentation of his terrific Konkani play Chuk Konnachi? (Whose fault?)

The packed audience enjoyed it thoroughly. The play (called tiatr in the native Konkani language) was rich in dialogues and its delivery in the peculiar Salcette accent Konkani made it comedic.

This is the first time that a Konkani in Toronto has seen a full house. Incidentally, director Marshal Fernandes had another Konkani sold-out show couple years ago. This could be credited to his unique marketing and organizational skills.

Toronto, which is home to more than 20,000 Goans, out of which at least more than a 1000 speak Konkani at home and claim it as their mother-tongue as per the recent census, can very easily deliver 300 Konkani-speaking and Konkani-knowing Goans to attend any Konkani tiatr. The audience in Toronto this time was very knowledgeable

The following list of actors and singers (not in any particular order) gave their best performances to make this tiatr quite memorable:

Dr. Lucina Pinto (O Canada! National Anthem translated into Konkani by Marshal), popular and talented singer/actor JoeVaz, upcoming young singer Rhio Gracias and director/actor/comedian/singer/composer/CD producer Marshal Fernandes (in an ode to Padma Shri M. As an reviewer, I would be remiss if I did not compliment the unknown author of the play.

The actors for their exceptional showing are Serah Barbosa (as Consu), who was undoubtedly the darling of the audience as witnessed from the wolf-whistles, whispers and comments from the audience; Agnelo Gracias, for his superb delivery of impeccable Konkani idioms; and director Marshal Fernandes, for his passive and sinister comic role and for putting up a fine overall theatrical performance that will be remembered for years to come.

'Ek Rikami Bazu'- Awareness through Drama

'Ek Rikami Bazu'- Awareness through Drama

A cancer support group 'Muskaan' in collaboration with the Kala Academy organised a show of the award winning Marathi play 'Ek Rikami Bazu' on June 21, 2009 at 5 p.m. at the Dinanath Mangueshkar Kala Mandir, Panaji.
This play dealt with the various aspects of the very occurrence and consequences of having a malignant lump in the breast.
In an episodic form, it narrates the story of Ritu, during both the pre and post operation stages of breast cancer. The play is like a kaleidoscope of Ritu's life: situations, memories, feelings and the people who come and go during this difficult period.
It also deals with the physical and psychological changes that occur because of the cancer not only in her but also to the people around her. Designed and directed by Aniruddha Khutwad, the story's adaptation, light and music was done by Pradeep Vaidya.
Breast cancer is on the rise in Goa. 'Muskaan's' main objective is to create awareness about the prevention and early detection of cancer. It carries out camps to educate women on self-examining their bodies for early detection of breast cancer.

A Riverting Political Drama 'Mhaka Kiteak Poddlam'

A Riveting Political Drama
'Mhaka Kiteak Poddlam'

Navhind Times / 2009-06-26

A 'tiatr' from Roseferns, is a scathing attack on the influx of outsiders and their dominance over Goans today. A futuristic look at the political situation in Goa, where there is every chance that a migrant might become a minister or even the Chief Minister. For once, a sincere reference is made, and highlighted, to the late Dr Jack de Sequeira the great Goan politician, Father of the Opinion Poll. All blue blooded Goans need to respect and remember this man. It was because of him, we can proudly call ourselves Goans.

Anton (bab) is a freedom fighter. His son, Brian is to all appearances an honest and dedicated cop. Brian's wife Preeti loves and respects her father in-law and husband. Sister Valerie, a missionary working in Orissa, comes down to Goa on a visit and stays with this family. Yadav is a minister in the government of Goa and his son Santosha wants to stand for elections to the assembly. The evil Yadav and his criminal son have wrapped the voters of their constituency, round their little finger with the power of money.

Roseferns is to be complimented for reminding Goans, especially the younger generation, of the late Dr Jack de Sequeira and the role he played to save Goa, during the opinion poll. The script has good dialogues and beautiful references to the Holy Bible. The cast has Roshan as Preeti and Antonette as Sister Valerie. The ladies perform well. Antonette returns later with a fine comic performance.

Roseferns is confidence personified as the dignified Anton (bab) while Tari
impresses as the rash and boisterous Santosha. Victor is good as the cop and Peter plays another perfect character as the minister, Yadav. Sally, Saby and Brian along with Tony provide lots of humour. Watch out for the opening scene at 'Khareband'.

The music is catchy. Roseferns sings the opening song. Great lyrics and rendered well! Other songs are performed by Peter-Roshan, Antonette, Maythan, Victor, Tony de Ribandar and Brian. Tari's solo and the first duet by Peter-Roshan need
special mention.

Unforgettable Alfred Rose

Unforgettable Alfred Rose

Yesterday, 21 October, was the 6th death anniversary of Goa’s one and only melody king and legend, Alfred Rose.

Being a leading innovator and a prolific composer, his contribution to the Konkani stage and music is immeasurable.

Through his songs, he will always remain alive in the hearts of his fans worldwide.

Remembering Alfred Rose on his 6th Death Anniversary

Goa's Melody King passed away on 21st Oct 2003, today is the 6th Death
Anniversary, Alfred Rose may have left this world but his voice is still in our ears as we hear his songs.
Having watched him singing live in many tiatrs in Bombay n Goa, we still feel that he is around us...

Alfred Rose has a huge fan following and today, one of his greatest fans
Agnelo Fernandes has dedicated this site in his name
www.alfredrose. com The site is not fully ready yet but will be updated very soon.

Another fan from Dubai who calls Alfred his Musical hero wrote:
""today is ur death anniversary but still today ur in our hearts in our
minds whenever we listen to ur songs we feel that ur r singing live ur r somewhere around us decades have passed
for the songs u sang but still today people like to hear and sing them and will always like to
listen and sing no matter whether it is ur 6th anniversary or 60th anniversary u will always remain in our hearts ""

I am also one of his fans and as a tribute to the Meloday King, I have compiled the lyrics of 100 of his songs which
are posted on my blog : http://edskantaram. blogspot. com/ besides also having a huge compliations of his songs.

Though it is said that he has composed and sang over 5000 songs (1500 being
in English) yet there is no trace of thousands of songs. Besides the few CDs released by FC Global there are
still many songs which are with Goans on cassettes, which can now be converted to CD's. I also understand that AIR
Akashwani has a large collection of his records, and they are in the process of digitalising the same.

On this day I share with you one song of Alfred which is not yet on CD...this song with a spanish tune speak volumes
of his singing, composing and music arrangement.

http://ishare. rediff.com/ music/Entertainm ent/Familicho_ Ekvott--- Alfred-Rose/ 816678

and here is another one

http://ishare. rediff.com/ music/others/ maim-bhas- or-mother- tongue-by- alfred-rose/ 575836

It is also said that some of compositions of Alfred were incidents which
happend in his life...the duet song 'Tuka Soddchinam' by Rita n Alfi after the accident and
another song 'Talleacho Cancer' after he was diagnosed of throat cancer which was cured
by a miraculous doctor at Breach Candy Hospital Bombay..Aéroplanak Uzo'..death of his friend in
the AI air crash in Bandra... my hair stood when I heard him sing this song barely 3 days after the
accident.

Alfred Rose is the undisputed Melody King of Goa and no matter how many try
to imitate his voice and style, he will always be remembered by Goans forever.

Tiatr Academy Goa to preserve Tiatr Literature, Schemes, etc....

TAG to preserve Tiatr Literature: Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) has observed that although thousands of tiatr scripts are written and staged, there are very few tiatr scripts published in the book form. TAG intends to preserve tiatr literature for posterity. This can be done by publishing books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores. TAG, therefore will publish books of tiatr scripts, lyrics of songs, one act plays, etc in book form. Interested script writers and lyricists are requested to send three copies each of the scripts of tiatr or lyrics of songs to TAG on or before 15th November, 2009.

Promotion of Tiatr music: The TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing instruments such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day and that these two instruments are very important in the music of the Tiatr. In view of this the TAG has formulated a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance.

Documentation of the history of Tiatr: TAG felt that there is an urgent need to document the history of Goan Tiatr. It was also strongly felt that priority must be given to oral documentation with the help of old Tiatr artistes who are still living. Hence TAG has decided to document the history and experiences in the field of Tiatr by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers, directors, actors, singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light effects, background music, etc. etc. DVDs. It was also resolved to document the history of tiatr by publishing books on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics related to Tiatr, its song and music. Persons interested in taking up the work of documentation may contact the Member Secretary of TAG on phone number 9823375530 or the President on phone no. 9822170102.

19th October, 2009

Tiatr Academy Goa
Panjim

PRESS NOTE

Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) condoles the death of the budding tiatr artiste Eddison Fernandes who expired on 17th October, 2009. Although he served the tiatr stage for a short time yet his contribution to tiatr stage was valuable.

He was a multi-talented artiste. His promising qualities in acting would have been a great source of strength for the future of Tiatr. He was a musician as well a singer too who would have been a great asset to the Konkani tiatr stage. His sudden death at a very tender age has saddened the tiatr fraternity.

TAG prays to the Almighty to give courage to his family members for the loss of young Eddison and eternal peace to his soul.
