A story of sacrifice and evil deeds
by J P Pereira (Navhind Times)

Laurente Pereira from Utorda, working in the Gulf, is an actor who has made quite an impression on the Konkani stage in Goa. After presenting his ‘tiatr’ titled ‘Hea Gharachim Dharam Bond’ in Gulf, the show is now staged in Goa. Some of the best artistes from the Konkani stage perform a tale of selfless love, misunderstandings, sacrifice and the evil that some men can do.The story revolves round a father, his two daughters Cynthia and Sonia and Trevor, the son. While Cynthia marries Dylan, Sonia is ditched at the altar for not bringing enough dowry. The son is a drunkard and presumed good for nothing. Dylan is a kind hearted individual, helpful to all and loves his wife a lot. But there is always evil lurking around in the form of Vicky, a freak of a man who is out to spoil peace for others. Watch what happens later as the story unfolds, when good triumphs over evil in the end.

The script has some nice meaningful dialogues but some of the incidents seem a bit dated. Suicide is not covered by Life Insurance and Trevor’s character is very much downtrodden.

The setting is beautiful, the light effects timely and the direction is just right. The well chosen cast has Felcy as Cynthia and Olga as Sonia. Two well enacted roles, both in the happy times as well as the sad times. Meena does her bit as the mother. Roseferns does a wonderful role of the father while Mathew’s act as the loving and caring Dylan is just perfect. Pascoal plays the drunken Trevor in his usual calm and confident manner and Victor is Cliff, the man who refuses to marry Sonia but wants her to come back later. Anil Pednekar is the evil Vicky. The audience could hate the character he plays, at the same time laugh at what he has to say. Cajetan does a wonderful cameo of the ‘bhatkar’. The comedy is provided by Querobina, Selvy and Agostinho. Quite amusing and once again Selvy steals the show with a great performance.

The opening song has the director introducing himself to the audience, with gratitude for all the support he received. There are some nice songs from Lawry, Pascoal and Marcos. One of the main attractions is a trio by Laurente – Marcus – Cajetan and a wonderfully humorous quartet by Peter – Roshan – Lawry – Selvy. There is also an impressive octet Laurente – Querobina - Pascoal – Felcy – Mathew – Olga – Victor and ofcourse Selvy. The play is an entertainer and is definitely worth watching!!!

TOTAL ECLIPSE IN GOA ........ BY ALEXYZ

22 JULY 2009

________________
‘Tiatr’ Feast Awaits Enthusiasts
Written by J P Pereira
Tuesday, 14 July 2009 01:21

Kala Academy Goa will organize their annual ‘khell tiatr’ festival, this year dedicated to the memory of the late Antonio Maria Pereira. The various plays will be staged at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir Auditorium from July 14 to July21, 7.00 p.m. onwards. The festival has an interesting line up of plays.

‘Amchei Anvde’, from M P Productions, Vasco da Gama, sees Maxcy Pereira weaving a tragic tale of an individual who sacrifices everything, including the love of his life, for his brother only to be rewarded with ungratefulness. The innocent parents suffered in the conflict. A beautiful script and continuity makes the play very watchable. Tracy, Maria, Oldrin, Marcus and Maxcy head the cast. Dominic Carvalho’s ‘Tim Odhik Bhagi’ presented by J M Productions, Calata, Majorda, narrates what happens when family conflicts arise and how others take advantage in such a situation. The play also takes a critical look at way Goans are selling of their land. Gloria, Rita, Cynette, Godwin, Seno and Jackie head the cast with good support from Cyril, Caetano, Pitush, Domnic and others.
Socorro de Sta Cruz is well known for his audio albums. ‘Hanv Porot Letelim’ written by Socorro and presented through Liby’s Productions, Santa Cruz, is a play that takes a look at exploitation of women, especially young widows, by the rich crooks. The woman fights back but cannot bear the ungratefulness of her own son. Carmine, Peter de Merces, Socorro, Cyril Almeida and others support Maria Martins who is impressive in the lead. Anil Olga Productions, Quitula Bardez will stage ‘Ek Dhago Sukacho’ a story of family values written and directed by Anil Pednekar, who has made some impressive plays in the last couple of years. This presentation will also be staged in New Delhi later this month. The cast has Olga, Aplon, Luis Bacchan, Netto and Anil in the main roles.
After a break of two days, on July 20, Menezes Theatre, Chinchinim will deviate from their usual family dramas to present a tale of suspense and mystery - ‘Love Story 2009’. Writer-director, Mario Menezes tells the story of two lovers. The girl is brutally murdered and the boy is accused of the crime. He is arrested by a corrupt cop and has to prove his innocence. No more disclosures as those who have not watched the play have to be surprised. Rosy Alvares, Agnes, Lawry Travasso, Mario de Vasco, Edison, Mario Menezes and others feature in the cast.
To wind up M P Productions, Benaulim will present Menino de Bandar’s ‘Jiv’, a tale of a life created and deserted by its parents. The play carries a fine message. Antonette de Calangute, Angela, Ida, Cielo and Ben Evangelisto star in the play. Antush and Bonny give impressive performances while Menino de Bandar does a fine cameo of a traditional tailor.
Do enjoy the shows!

Lorna's new Konkani album "Tuzo Mog"

The First Lady Encores.....

Her irresistible voice enthralled Goan in her younger days with hits like Bebdo, Calangute, and Pisso. Lorna's soulful voice in fact can and never will be forgotton. Period. She's back now with here new album "Tujo Mog". This time that easily recognizable voice is back courtesy of Bond (Afonso) Braganza, the album's lyricist who took the initiative to reintroduce the Goan nightingale after a three year break due to ill health. Lorna released her last album 'Tuje Vinnem' three years ago. Bond from Mapusa is the father of Veeam Braganza, who herself is said (in some circles at least) to be a younger version of Lorna. Workign exclsuively with daughters Veeam and Riasa, Bond has been planning for long to get Lorna back on air.

One of Veeam's Konkani song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9ndH_eV3aE&feature=related

"I toiled for one whole year to get Lorna to Dear Studio, the recording studio in Mahalaxmi from Dhobitalao where she stays to sing just ten songs. it was a tedious task but I am happy with the results. I wrote the lyrics, composed the tunes and described the songs to Lorna", says Bond.

Music House, owned by Gurudas Gondalkar in Mapusa, has produced 'Tuzo Mog'. To be released on July 26 in Goa it will be available in Vancouver, Paris, and London.

Albano Fernandes, a Swindon-based Goan will promote the album in the UK. About the album, he says, "I wrote teh first osng, 'Bob Marley' when I was in Class VI and Lorna sings that in the album", says Bond. "The other songs like 'Nach Rock and Roll", 'Yeo Yeo Moga' and 'Dudsagor' are written keeping Lorna in mind", he adds. The entire album has ten songs, all sung by her.

Bond has worked with music master Josihno, to add a little bit of Chris Perry's magic to the songs. "We didn't try to ape his music but tried out something which resembles his evergreen hits. Chris Perry is a legend and getting close to his style is a big achievement itself", admits Bond. The album begins with a romantic title track "Tuzo Mog" which Bond thinks can be sung at weddings. "Reng te Teng" is a Kunbi song which stretched her to the limit by its distinctive music. Junior Bond and Aniceto have sung duets with Lorna in the album. "From love ballads to Lorna's signature strong voice, "Tuzo Mog" has different genres of music in reportedly one great album.

"Lorna has health problems. When I went to her the second time with the lyrics, she was suprised and appeared not be remember that she had already consented to sing. She didn't say much, she just listened to the lyrics. But when she entered the recording studio, she became this giant. You don't argue with her, and yet she is open to suggestions".

Bond has produced six albums with daughters Veeam and Riasa and wrote the lyrics for most of Veeam's Konkani songs except for the album titled "Johnny Johnny". He performed at local tiatrs and sang before small audiences before jumping on the stage to act in (late) Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa's tiatrs, "Niz Mog" and "Doxea" and Dr. Rosario Rodrigues' "Mhaka Jivonnk Di". He acted the lead role in all three dramas. Now, he is content with supporting the careers of his daughters as they develop themselves in the industry.

Lorna bonds with Bond:

By Daniel F. De Souza
dannyboy04@rediffmail.com

Mapusa based tiatrist and businessman Bond Braganza is all set to hit the headlines with his latest Konkani audio album ‘Tuzo Mog’ featuring the nightingale of the Konkani stage Lorna. Incidentally ‘Tuzo Mog’ is the title of one of Lorna’s hit song she sang earlier in Chris Perry Album. We will have to wait and watch what Bond has to offer in his latest audio album with a similar name. Whatever it is, it should surely be good!

The album I am told has 10 tracks all rendered by Lorna including two duets wherein she teams up with Jr. Bond (Mother-son duet) and Anicetto (A romantic duet). In the past Bond has produced 3 audio albums viz. ‘Mhaka Jieunk di, Mhozo Hero and Johnny Johnny’ which featured his singer daughter Veeam whose singing style and voice resembles closely to Lorna’s and were quiet a ht with the music lovers.

All the songs in the album have lyrics by Bond and the musical score is composed by Goa State Awardee Maestro Josinho D’Souza. Bond claims that the music in the album is specially scored keeping in mind the singer’s versatility and intensity of voice. Some of the tracks in the album he stated will surely remind listeners of the legend Chris Perry and his music. The tracks to be looked forward are viz., ‘Dudhsagar, Lollipop, Rengtte-teng, Bob Marley and Goenchem Sorpotel’ The album is recorded at Audio Master with Aurville Rodrigues.

‘Tuzo Mog’ is scheduled for release in Goa on 25th July at Mapusa followed by an international release at UK on 9th August 2009. The audio Album is produced and marketed by Music House Productions, Mapusa Goa.

Pushing Konkani Cinema Ahead - Wilmix & Sharon to present Konkani Film "Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo?"

Pushing Konkani Cinema Ahead

- by CLARA A RODRIGUES

The famous and much loved tiatrist duo of Wilmix and Sharon were on a four-year break. Yes, a break from music albums and tiatrs but not from creativity. The duo, who have been entertaining Goan audiences for the past 40 years or so, are back with a movie ‘Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo?’ - an intriguing title that will leave the audience with questions and answers to choose from.
The story revolves around relationships, says Claron Mazarello, the son of this talented couple, who is making his debut in the realm of movie making. It speaks of the attraction and love of a husband-wife relationship. It has a typical Goan setting, with Goan elements, like the motorcycle pilot continues Claron. Claron is of the opinion that Goa has a lot of talent. “We went to Mumbai, sat through shoots, saw what it takes to call shots. In all, it has taken us four years to get this movie going.”
Ask him if he is optimistic of the outcome of the movie considering that the Goan audience ironically do not go out in large numbers to watch indigenous movies, he says, it is not the idea of making a movie that is paramount, what matters is that we are doing what we really want to do from our hearts.
The cast of the film are famous personalities from the ‘tiatr’ world. Agnelo Lobo, Wilson, Humbert, Fermeeno, Effie, Eddison, Michael, Roseferns, Menino De Bandar, Prince Jacob, Pradeep, Franky, Jimmy, Jose De Velim, Ancy Gonsalves to name a few. Claron Mazarello and Sharon as well as other talented artistes will be a part of it.
It was not easy to make the movie, which will soon be wrapping up its shooting soon. Finance plays an important role. “The budget is somewhere around 55 lakhs, out of which around 20 lakhs or so will be financed by government’s schemes for film makers. We are trying to get a sponsor. The remaining money is from individual contributions,” he states.
The movie has beautifully captured the scenic beauty of the locale in the interiors of Goa. Says Claron “We wanted a quiet place, where there wouldn’t be many people, so that we could shoot in peace.”
Assisting them in the production of ‘Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo’ is Dominic Dias, Gilbert Mascarehnas, and a unit 26 other technicians.
Goan Images, a folk troupe will also be seen in the movie. Through this movie we would also like to dispel people’s attitude towards dance. “Many do not send their children to dance because of a certain perceptions, but in reality, through dancing you can earn a lot of money and learn a lot”.
The movie employed a technique of telling the story via flashbacks. An unconventional method but at the same time a change for audiences who are used to regular ways of telling a story.
Something has to be said on the music front. The music director for the movie will be Baltazar Fernandes from Chorao. The same man who wrote music scores for Bollywood directors like ‘Kalyanji Anandji’. Each song will have elaborate music arrangements. Siddhanath Buyao and Shantanu have done the music recordings at Buyao Theatres.
Despite what critics and others might say, Claron and the team behind ‘Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo’ are confident of hitting well with the people. “My parents have been entertaining people for so long. I trust them to know the pulse of the people,” he says.

Konkani music album "JAMBO GOA"

Music and Entertainment
JAMBO GOA

Jambo Goa, a Konkani audio album, coming from the former epicentre of Goan nostalgia--East Africa--has sent the Konkani heartland into raptures. There's something special, typical in Goa's ethnic music, which not many of our modern maestros can really grasp nowadays.

So many good musicians have rendered Konkani music, albeit excellently, but renditions of the original Goan way are rather rare. The kantar is a queer brand of Goan folklore, entrenched in satire and entrancing romance. Kenya Goan Michael Fernandes (popularly known as Miguel) has brought it out wonderfully, successfully in Jambo Goa.

Miguel has teamed up with his wife Joanita to produce the Kiswahili-titled album, which comes in plain audio cassette as well as CD. Featuring among the singers are their three children--Marietta, Davina and Denzil--who have been tunefully backed by tiatr stalwarts like Antonette, Prince Jacob and Humberto besides Miguel. In East Africa, Miguel has reigned supreme in scripting and presenting Konkani tiatr (dramas) for over three decades. Quite a lot of Konkani-loving Goans there will recall his famed performances. It's with the same undying zeal to wax lyrical, sing and entertain that Miguel has surfaced with Konkani music.

Goa Tuka Mhaka, British Passport, Patron Goencho, Portun Ieat-re, Piki-Piki, and UK, Canada & Goa are some of the songs, which overflow with Miguel's unstinted love and affection for his maimdhes as well as traditional tiatr. Enchanting background music for the album has been arranged by Goa's evergreen maestro Josinho de Souza.

The sequence of listenable songs begins as well as ends on a Konkani-Swahili note, with Jambo Goa and La La Salama respectively. Konkani jamborees in East Africa quite often featured a couple of Portuguese traditional hits in the jolly old days; this album includes a bit of it. The highly popular cassettes and CD are selling well in Canada (Joaquim Fernandes), London (Justino Dourado), Nairobi-Kenya (Tony Fernandes and Maria Fernandes) and Mombasa-Kenya (Egid Baretto), besides all the leading music stores in Goa.

Each one will love and enjoy the music for his own, personal reason as we did when we first heard it…for us it was a brief spell of quite authentic and utterly Goan music.

'Greatest Konkani Song Hits' - A 214-page Book & DVD

Francis Rodrigues, an expat Goan from Vasco, has put together this book that is due to be released shortly (in August 2009). It is titled 'Greatest Konkani Song Hits'.
http://www.KonkaniSongBook.com

The 214-page book comes along with a DVD and contains sheet music, lyrics, chords and translations of the songs. There are 30 songs in this volume.

_________________

"The Greatest Konkani Song Hits - Volume I" international songbook being released on World Goa Day (20 Aug. 2009) is already generating rave write-ups from reviewers worldwide. It's easy to see why - so mind-blowing in concept, it literally takes your breath away.

Firstly - the original sheet-music, transcribed and notated in painstaking detail - covers popular music of the last fifty years, now made available for the very first time. This alone is worth far more than the price of the book. This is however topped by authentic and complete lyrics of blockbuster Konkani, Portuguese and Swahili songs, painstakingly cross-checked and researched from innumerable sources. And there's more to come!

Music chords with printed diagrams, decorate the sheet-music, so the songs can be accompanied by harmonic instruments like the piano, accordion, keyboard, guitar, etc. That's not all! Catering to bands and ensembles worldwide, separate music notations in tablature for the guitar are a stunning addition.

But the absolute coup-de-grace is the brilliant concept of the translations. Intricately researched and collated from a number of sources, the supreme touch has been setting them to verse, which not only increased their charm tenfold, but now enables these great gems to be sung in English too!

The icing on the cake is the exciting and detailed liner and program notes, which brings the reader the stories and background behind these fabulous songs and their composers. Much of the detail is original, and told with great charm.

To top it off, Canadian master-pianist Victor Martins has been filmed performing the songs on a DVD being distributed free as a bonus to all purchasers - worth more than the book itself!

This is a book of the most popular music sung or performed in the Konkani world in Goa, Mangalore and worldwide - you'll find all the great Konkani, Mangalorean, Portuguese, Damanese and Swahili hits here - music is universal, shows no difference!

For the very first time here is the music of Chris Perry, Frank Fernand, Wilfy Rebimbus, M.Boyer, Alfred Rose, H. Britton, Fadhili Williams, Henry D'Souza, B. Magno, Los Payos, Paulo Borges, Romeo Mendes, Manuel Alphonso, Silviano Barbosa, Reginald Fernandes, etc. - transcribed perfectly note-for-note, playable on any instrument!

Songs include: "Cathrina", "Adeus Korchea Vellar","Claudia","Mog Tuzo Kithlo Axelom", "Lisboa", "Kampala", "Adeus" (Bhuerantlo Munis), "Sacrament Zoddlo",
"Bandra Festak", "Mollbailo Dou", "Malaika", "Maria Isabel","Encosta Tua Cabecinha", "Cecilia", "Mogacho Divo", "Proud To Be A Goan", "Marialina", "Maria Pitache", "Calangute", "Bebdo", "Sweater Kori", Tambdde Roza", "Hanv Saiba", "Don Kallzam", "Cadiza-za-za-za", "Garacho Divo", "Ixttaghot", etc.

Changing the face of Konkani culture - documenting our music magic.

Robin Vaz's Death Anniversary

Lyrics of Konkani song 'Mogachem Tufan'

It is four years today, November 16, 2006 since our beloved Robin Vaz (1932-2002), the giant of the Konkani stage - actor-singer-writer-director - passed away. Robin started his stage career in Bombay at the age of 20. His first tiatro was titled 'Bebdo Put. He served the Konkani stage for around five decades and displayed his prodigious talent in acting and singing throughout. Robin was not only a gigantic figure playing gigantic roles on the stage but he also had a gigantic heart; off stage, he was a disciplinarian.

He was an expert in Goan folklore songs.
Robin Vaz has written and directed as many as 27 tiatros, most popular among them being “Agente Monteiro”; “Opinion Poll of Goa”; “Put Konnancho” and religious tiatros like “Adanv ani Eva”; “Fatima Saibinn”; “Barabas”, etc. Being a freedom fighter, he enacted the main role in plays written by Mussolini Menezes based on the freedom struggle, like “Ravji Ranno”; “Padrichem Bond”; “Martyrs of Cuncolim”, etc. Robin Vaz has acted in five Konkani films. Even today, his folk songs are popular on the All India Radio in Goa and Mumbai. Kala Academy recognized his enormous contribution to the Konkani stage and presented him the prestigious Goa State Cultural Award in the year 2001.

Robin Vaz was liked by all tiatro lovers in Goa but the Anjunkars had a special liking for him, which is why we always brought him to Anjuna. Whenever he acted in a tiatro in Anjuna or Mapusa and since Jessie Cardozo (now Dias) was one of the members of Bombay tiatrists, the whole group visited Jessie’s house in Gaumvaddy and wined and dined in the open area in front of her house. I always admired Robin’s height and physique and kept staring at him. He towered over everyone; he looked like Goliath; he ate and drank like a giant!

I loved his unique Konkani accent; it sounded good and jibed with his base voice and personality.

Here are beautiful lyrics of one of Robin Vaz’s oldest love songs, which happen to be one of my favorites:

“MOGACHEM TUFAN” by the late Robin Vaz
I
Chondrim liptalo kupan
Halonaslem zaddachem pan
Kallzan zatalem mogachem tufan
Tea vellar tuka getlelem gopan

Chorus
Neketram dipkaitalim movbar
Sumarachea, bara horar
Hath dorun eka-mekachea kallzar
Jurar zalelim sobemazar

II

Mhunno mhaka uzvaddacho divo
Sodanch kallzant urtolo jivo

Chorus
Ontrollar mog kortat suknnim

III

Innocent kallzak ghatle gae

Chorus
