SCHEMES OF TIATR ACADEMY GOA

Tiatr Academy Goa
Panjim

PRESS NOTE

SCHEMES OF TIATR ACADEMY GOA

Tiatr Academy, Goa (TAG) has initiated numerous schemes for the promotion of tiatr in Goa and out of Goa. Some of these schemes are as under:

Promotion of Award Winning Tiatrs
Kala Academy, Goa organizes Tiatr Festivals every year in Panjim only. But the producers and directors of award winning tiatrs have no opportunity to stage these award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa. These tiatrs display high dramatic standards but they are not shown at different parts of Goa. The reason being these tiatrs do not attract large audience because they have mostly been staged by amateur artistes. Therefore TAG has decided to organize a festival of Award winning tiatrs in Margao so that the people from Margao and surrounding areas may experience the presentations staged by amateur tiatr artistes in the yearly festival organized by Kala Akademy, Goa.

Financial assistance to dramatic troupes going to Bombay/Poona
Goan Tiatr was born in Bombay. There was a time when the Tiatr culture was more prominent in Bombay than in Goa. Dramatic troupes from Bombay used to come to Goa to stage their tiatrs. In the recent years the scenario has completely changed. There are very few tiatr artistes left in Bombay today. New tiatr artistes also rarely flourish in Bombay. Hence dramatic troupes from Goa go to Bombay and stage their shows in Bombay and Poona. Many a time staging tiatrs in Bombay/Poona by Goan dramatic troupes is not a financially viable proposition.
Therefore TAG will give financial support to the tune of Rs. 25,000/ - to any dramatic troupe going to Bombay/Poona to stage its tiatrs there provided that at least five shows of the same tiatr are staged during that trip. This facility will be made available to dramatic troupes coming to Goa from Bombay too.
Production of Tiatrs in villages
The TAG is of the opinion that the hidden singing and acting talents among the youths in the villages must be explored and that encouragement should be given to develop such talents in the villages.
In view of this TAG has formulated a scheme to promote tiatr activities in the villages among the youth by giving them the required financial and technical support. Institutions / groups / dramatic troupes / etc interested in promoting Tiatr culture among the youth in the villages can take benefit of this scheme. The participating youth must be the residents of that village and their age should not exceed 20 years. However maximum of five senior artistes from the same village will be permitted to act in that tiatr.

TAG requests the tiatr writers, producers and lovers of tiatr to take advantage of the schemes of TAG and promote tiatr culture in Goa as well as outside Goa. Interested persons may contact the Member Secretary of TAG on phone number 9823375530or the President on phone no. +91 9822170102

An English Play ‘SWEET POISON’ by Tomazinho Cardozo – A Review

An English Play ‘SWEET POISON’ by Tomazinho Cardozo – A Review

It has been raining incessantly for the last one week – we have not seen the sun all these days! Despite heavy rains, I said to myself: “Come what may; I must attend Tomazinho’s play today (11/8/08)”. With this determination I headed to Panaji and reached Kala Academy at 6:50 p.m. The play began at 7:00.

The play is set in the 1980s, the time which saw a boom in tourism and tourism-related activities, particularly in the coastal belt of Goa. The scenic beauty, the serene ambience and vast stretches of sandy beaches beckoned to the tourist, both foreign and domestic.

The story revolves around a middle class family with two children – son and daughter - studying in the college. Their father is employed in Kuwait. They have a nice ancestral house right on the beach with a thatched hut beside it.

The mother renovates the house, and, in her greed to make a fast buck, she rents it to tourists. There are three rooms in the house – one is rented to a German couple, the other to an Indian tourist (Madrasi), and the third one to a girl from Bombay, who turns out to be a journalist. The mother also supplies meals; she cooks in the thatched hut. Thus, she makes a lot of money from the paying guests. The mother and children sleep in the sitting room.

To begin with, the son gets a naked glimpse of the German couple living in their room. Watching them naked becomes a habit for him. The moment he reaches home, he gets to their bedroom door and watches them. Gradually, he befriends them; ultimately, he starts taking drugs.

Initially, the daughter was against the German couple’s stay in their house but she, too, begins to take a liking for them and becomes their friend; the result? She, too, becomes a dope addict.

To make matters worse, the Madrasi paying guest, turns out to be a drug supplier. He lures the son and sends out packets of cocaine through him to his contacts; thus, the son becomes a drug peddler.

There are two side characters in the play – A guy called Cursino Mergulhão who is known to all as ‘tourism’, and his archrival who is also known by his nickname ‘anti-tourism’. While ‘tourism’ encourages the mother to go for tourism and make more money, the ‘anti-tourism’ cautions and tells her of the adverse effect of tourism on the life of the children in the family, particularly on education. He also tells her that money is not everything in this world.

The father suddenly arrives home from Kuwait. Upon entering the house, the wife asks him if he liked the new shape of the renovated house. She then convinces him to leave his job and join her in the business to which he agrees. He then asks for his children but none is available around. He is upset because he had especially flown home for his daughter’s birthday on that day.

While in the sitting room, the Bombay girl comes out and introduces herself to the father. He asks her how she could afford to pay Rs.250 per day for the room. She tells him that she has been sent to Goa by the Editor of a newspaper to investigate and write about tourism in Goa. She then hands him the final copy of the manuscript and asks him to read it. Obviously, it was a report on his family.

As he was reading the manuscript, his daughter shows up along with the German couple. She is so high on drugs that she can’t even walk properly – she was flying (on drugs)! The father can’t believe his eyes. He wishes her happy birthday and hands in a gold necklace as a birthday gift but instead of thanking him, she passes it on to the German guy and asks him to sell it and buy drugs for them. For the mother, the whole world collapses around her; she holds her head in her hands and is dumb-founded.

While the father was watching his daughter’s behavior, son rushes inside the house followed by a police inspector. Yes, you got it right. He was caught red-handed distributing drugs. Both parents are flabbergasted!

The play highlights a very important issue in our society that threatens the value system and the culture of Goa. By renting houses to tourists, locals make a lot of money without much sacrifice and hard work – this is very sweet. However, the intensity with which it badly affects the value system and lifestyles of our children, it is poisonous; hence, the name of the play ‘SWEET POISON’!

Without exception, each one of the actors has done fabulously well. The role of mother ‘Magdu’ was played by none other than Irene Cardozo; the father – Manohar Redkar; the two children – Shivanand Naik as ‘Jerry’ and Joslyn Misquita as ‘Linda’. They were supported by the foreign tourist couple – Comedian 64 as ‘Wheel’ and Selza Lopes as ‘Geene’ – everyone thought they were real foreigners. The Indian tourist ‘Puttuswamy’ was performed by Dnyashwar Morajkar; Larissa D’Souza as ‘Freeda the journalist’; Mathias Mascarenhas as ‘tourism’; Assis Cardozo as ‘anti-tourism’; Tukaram Naik as the Police Inspector.

The stage setting was by Timothy Dias; background music by Vikas Chopdekar; light effects by Dhananjay Phalkar; Costumes by Irene Cardozo; make-up by Xavier Mascarenhas.

The play is the translation of the Konkani tiatr entitled “Mhonvall Vikh” by Tomazinho Cardozo. It was staged in 1989 in the yearly Tiatr Competition organized by Kala Academy of Goa. It is adapted in English by Irene Cardozo.

Our heartiest congratulations to Tomazinho Bab Cardozo for a well-written and directed play! We look forward to witnessing more Konkani tiatr and English plays from your pen. Keep up the good work! God bless.

Unforgettable H Britton

Unforgettable H Britton

I was shocked to learn about the demise of the evergreen iconic Konkani stage artist Hermegildo Camilo, popularly known as H Britton.

In earlier times, tiatr was not as popular as it is today. In the year 1969, Britton had walked into Sesa Goa mines at Sirsaim for an interview. On seeing my familiar face, he asked me where food was available. At that time, as there was no canteen at Sesa Goa mines, I took him to the private house where I was myself eating. Thereafter, our friendship grew.

He will be long remembered by tiatr lovers as a towering personality who mesmerised audiences with his talent wherever he performed. His passing away is a great loss for Goan tiatr lovers as well as to the Konkani stage and especially to his birthplace, Britona village.

TWO KONKANI
G E M S R E L E A S E D

By Daniel F De Souza

FAUSTO V DA Costa needs no formal introduction to Goans. The same applies to his music company “Dinfa Productions” which, till now, has given some memorable hit audio CDs and cassettes to Konkani music lovers. The most recent gems that have been produced by Dinfa Productions are Goenchim Mannkam Motiam a re-mix of old Konkani hits, and hit songs of the late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa’s award-winning play Niz Mog.

Goenchim Mannkam Motiam is a remix CD of hits of renowned composers and singers of yesteryear. Selected hits of Minguel Rod, Kid Boxer, Young Menezes, M. Boyer, Remmie Colaco, C. Alvares, H. Briton, Alfred Rose, Frank Fernand, Shailendra Singh, Bhupendra, Amit Kumar and Antonette are included in the CD.

Among the several unforgettable hits, one gets to listen to the original version of hits such as Ghovachem Ghor by C. Alvares and Antonette, Girl Friend by H. Briton, Mhaka Poun Hanstai by Alfred and Rita Rose. The CD begins with an old hit solo of M. Boyer, Bhurguim Vo Baulim, rendered by Michael M. and Aitar Kela a fast rap song of Young Menezes sung by Philip T follows. Ghovachem Ghor, in the original voice of the King of Duets late C. Alvares and Antonette, is a delight. Melodious Mumbai-based singer Nephie Rod belts out Amit Kumar’s Noman Tuka Goa.

Philip T and Michael M. combine well to bring you ‘Kid-Young-Rod’ a hit combination of the early sixties. M. Kumar follows next with a romantic solo ‘Kallzachem Sukh’ which was originally sung by Shailendra Singh. H. Briton’s ‘Pandu Lampianv’ is rendered by Michael M. Remmie Colaco’s all time hit song “Ghorachem Sukh” is sung by Francis, but the singer fails to come anywhere close to veteran singer Remmie Colaco either in style or depth. ‘Lawrie Io’ set to the pop beat is rendered well by Anthony San and Jennifer, Anthony San follows later with yet another hit ‘Nixeani Fulam’ originally of Bhupender. It must be said to the credit of the singer Anthony San that in both the above songs he sings far better than the original version. His melodious voice makes pleasant listening.

‘Sopnantle Tiatr’ is a well composed song sung by Peter de Benaulim, this is followed by another duet ‘Sobhit Amchem Goem’ by Jennifer and Allan. Veteran singer Antonette Mendes adds flavour to the CD by her splendid voice singing ‘Mog’, a touching Mando. “Mhaka Poun Hanstai” is yet another original gem coming from the melody king, late Alfred Rose and his wife Rita. “Bobor” a comedy hit song of late Minguel Rod is the last track on the CD sung by Michael M.

This Re-mix version CD has music composed by some great music composers in the likes of Johny Rodrigues, Frank Fernand, Joe Perry, Luis Martins, Alfred Rose, Cruz Jazzwala, and Manuel Alphonso. The CD priced at Rs.200/- comes with a free sing-along lyrics booklet. ‘Goenchim Mannkam Motiam’ with music by Tony Dias, will certainly add variety to your Konkani Music collection. Go ahead pick your copy from the nearest dealer. ‘Niz Mog’ the other CD released by Dinfa Productions contains all the hit songs from Fr. Freddy J. Costa’s tiatr with the same name, which was released in 1985. The CD contains all the hits songs sung by the original artists from the play. All the songs from the tiatr are composed by late Fr. Freddy J. Costa and have rich lyrics with a true Goan flavour. Set to some really soulful music by Fr. Tony Cotta, it is makes some pleasant listening. ‘Niz Mog’, Mogan Hanv Poddon’ ‘Mogan Zaleam Pixim’ and ‘Magtam Upkar’ are some memorable solos rendered by Laura with her crystal clear voice. Melodious voiced singer Young Chico sings ‘Koxtt Dukh Kaddun’ and ‘Maim Ugddas Tuzo’. Young Chico combines once again with Laura to sing a duet ‘Mogan Zaleam Pixim’. He follows once again with Agnela to sing a duet ‘Kalliz Mhojem Kadd’. ‘Mog Tuzo re Cliff’ is another solo rendered by Agnela. All the ten songs are directly related to the main plot of ‘Niz Mog’ and Fr. Freddy Costa himself narrates the story in between the songs.

The CD contains five bonus tracks ‘Doth Dennem” by Laura and Agnela, ‘Sangati’ by Young Chico, ‘Doxea’ By Laura, ‘Madar Teresa’ by Young Chico and ‘Konknni Bhas’ by Laura. All these five tracks have some really meaningful lyrics. Since these songs were original recorded in the mid-eighties, Young Chico is at the peak of his singing career. His singing is exceptionally good and so are the other female voices too. The music score is written by Fr. Tony Cotta, who also plays the Saxaphone. He is accompanied by Agnelo Dias on the trumpet and the Syndicate Band provides the music. ‘Niz Mog’ was earlier released in the eighties by Dinfa Production on audio cassettes, whereas the same is now released on a CD format. At a time when good Konkani songs with meaningful lyrics and ethnic goan music are scarce to come by, “Niz Mog” provides the much needed relief. The CD is moderately priced at Rs. 150 and is available at all leading music stores in Goa , Mumbai and in the Gulf . ‘Niz Mog’ is certainly a priceless CD of quality songs and original goan music. Make sure you add the same to your ‘must buy’ list.

New Release in August: In the meantime Ace comedian John D’ Silva joins the bandwagon of tiatrists with his latest release ‘UGDDAS” scheduled for release from 1 st August 2004 in all the main cities of Goa. The premier show will be held in Mapusa. Departing from his usual format of non-stop shows, ‘UGDDAS’ is a full fledged tiatr. Seems like John has followed in the footsteps of Roseferns and Prince Jacob in switching over to the tiatr format for a change during the off-season slot. Speaking to John D’Silva I gathered that this is not his first step in producing a tiatr. He had earlier staged his first tiatr entitled “Chukele Roste” some years back. When asked why he preferred to produce a tiatr, John replied “Tiatrs have made a phenomenal comeback and they are very popular in recent times, hence I decided to try something different.” The show boasts of a varied cast with some big names from the Konkani stage. The writer promises the tiatr is an intriguing story with many twists. He has brought together four other top comedians of the Konkani stage apart from himself to provide the comic relief. So comedian Agostinho, Selvy, Luis Bachchan and Joanna will combine with John to produce side-splitting comedy states the writer/director. Some of the topmost and established singers of the Konkani stage are also lined up to strengthen the singing department. I wish John D’Silva all the very best in his new venture.

H. Britton Will Live On Forever

H. Britton Will Live On Forever
●Tomazinho Cardozo

Konkani Tiatr stage is passing through a critical phase. Few months back a stalwart of Konkani stage M. Boyer and another tiatr personality, Lucas Fernandes, bid adieu to all tiatr lovers. Within a very short span of time, yet another multi-talented personality of the tiatr stage, H. Britton passed away on 24th September 2009. H. Britton’s contribution to Konkani stage is not only immense but unique too. I consider his contribution unique because his acting as a female character kept the Konkani tiatr stage alive when female artistes were reluctant to act on the Tiatr stage.

H. Britton’s real name was Hermegildo Camilo. In fact I saw him on the Tiatr stage during the yearly tiatr staged by the villagers of Britona on the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Penha de France, in the late 1960s. If I am not mistaken, young, handsome and energetic Hermegildo had come down from Bombay to Goa for the village feast. This was clear from the announcement that had been made informing the tiatr audience that Hermegildo would sing two songs. Over 600 audience plus was eager to listen and see Hermegildo in action on the stage. Everyone in the audience was very happy. Continuous whistling by the boys from behind filled the atmosphere. I was surprised at the behaviour of the audience after Hermegildo’s name was announced. I realized that Hermegildo was very popular among the villagers. I was also informed that Hermegildo was acting in the tiatr after a gap of four years. Naturally people were anxious to see the acting of their most talented young artiste from the village at that time.

At last Hermegildo came on the stage with his inimitable style and rendered a song which sent the whole audience into pills of laughter. He was called again and again by the audience. But the best in Hermegildo was yet to come. The second song rendered by Hermegildo was excellent. He dressed as a girl and rendered the song in his unique style. His attire, his body movements, his actions and facial expressions mesmerized the audience. He was a perfect young lady criticizing the boys in her song. Although he criticized boys in that song, the boys in the audience could not resist in whistling more and more to bring him back on the stage again and again. He was the darling of the villagers of Britona at that time and hence they
called him Hermegildo and not H Briton although he had become a very prominent artiste in that name on the tiatr stage in Bombay at that time.

H. Britton’s singing, dancing and acting as a female character has no parallel in the history of Tiatr. He dominated the Tiatr stage as a female artiste for a long time although he had to go abroad in between for better prospects. After returning back he again embraced his first love – the tiatr. Besides being a very good singer and actor, he was a superb lyricist too. His composition was not only rich in content but
also full of wit and humour. He must have composed over 700 songs besides singing thousands of songs with other tiatr artistes including M. Boyer, Jacinto Vaz, and others.

He wrote and directed full length tiatrs too. His first tiatr was “Ekvottachem Foll” which was a hit. Some of his popular tiatrs which have won the hearts of the people were: “Custom Officer”, “Jivit Kuwaitchem”, “Bebdo Put”, “Bunhad Naslolem Ghor”, etc. However, as a singer, he has captured the hearts of the people. He has many albums to his credit. His songs namely ‘’Bandra Fest’ and ‘Pandu Lapiao’ has become a part and parcel of our cultural heritage.

As a female artiste of the tiatr stage he was responsible to keep the flag of Konkani Tiatr flying high when there was scarcity of girls to act in Tiatrs. He filled that vacuum then and saw that Tiatr not only lives but lives as a vibrant dramatic form of Goa.

Antonette Mendes, a legend of Konkani stage

Antonette, a legend of Konkani stage
By J P Pereira

The Konkani stage has witnessed Antonette Mendes, as an actress, a singer and a director as well. For more than three decades, this veteran has been regaling the ‘tiatr’ audience and lovers of Konkani songs, with her unique style of acting and melodious voice.

Antonette made her debut on the Konkani stage in ‘Aum To Tarvotti’, a play written and presented by her father, A K D’Souza. She sang a solo and wanted to continue singing. However, her father insisted that she also should try her acting and became one of the most sought after actress in those days. Roles were offered in dramas by the late C Alvares, Alfred Rose, J P Souzalin, and Kid Boxer. She continued acting for M Boyer, Prem Kumar, Master Vaz and many others. Later, she wrote and directed her own ‘tiatr’, ‘Abgath’, ‘Tum Saiba Konn’ and ‘Khoinchem Mhojem Ghor’, along with her husband, late Romeo Mendes.

Antonette has acted in two of the best Konkani films produced till date. Her appearance in ‘Amchem Noxib’, a pretty 16 year old opposite a great comedian, the late Anthony Mendes, is remembered till today. There she was, prancing and singing ‘Tum nasloi punn tuka sweaterkori’. In ‘Nirmonn’, her rendition of the song ‘Claudia’ made it one of the greatest hits of Konkani music. There were others too. ‘Pitti Pitti Mog’, ‘Pixem’, ‘Bebdem’, ‘Norsichem Fugasanv’ and those M Boyer’s hits, ‘Dothi Magon’ and ‘Zati’. Some recorded on the HMV label, others produced by private companies. Her own releases, include ‘Jivit Ek Sopon’, ‘Vailankanni’ and ‘Raiturchi Imaj’, on audio cassette.

A comedy role in Jagdish Narulla’s Hindi film, ‘Mohabbat Zindagi Hai’ and a major role in Cyrus Mistry’s English play ‘The Legacy of Rage’, where she plays a subtly manipulative woman, are the other highlights of her career. The state government felicitate her, for her qualitative contribution to Goan culture.

Antonette considers herself lucky to have succeeded in her career, in those days when women were relegated to the kitchen. She is grateful to her family, for all the support and encouragement she received from them. She advises new comers to work hard, to achieve one’s goals, as there are no short cuts to success. Young script writers should bring about a change in society, concentrate on family ties, and make society aware of the consequences of family break-ups.

During her career spanning more than 30 years, Antonette has toured east Africa, England and the Gulf countries. She still sings and acts, made a come back in her son in law’s Jose Rod’s comedy hit ‘Mauli’ and recently played a major role in the revival of M Boyer’s ‘Ekuch Rosto’.

18 years have passes. A light from our household is gone,
A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home,
which never can be filled. A loving Husband & Dada you were,
true & kind. Your beautiful memories Dada left behind.

Days are dark, you were a special person in our life.

Dear Dada, only God knows how we long for you,
what is home without you, Father dear, memories turns every

Rocky Dias and Michael de Siolim render two hard hitting solos about the actors of today and their claim for titles.
