WHISTLING A HAPPY TUNE, IN YESTERDAY'S GOA

WHISTLING A HAPPY TUNE, IN YESTERDAY'S GOA

Writes Domnic Fernandes, the author of
"Domnic's Goa: A Nostalgic Romp Through A
Bygone Era" (Abbe Faria Productions, Goa
2007): "This is my last article on Goanet
before I retire and return home for good
at the end of this month (October 2007).
I am looking forward to returning to my
beloved Anjuna where I shall once again
enjoy nature and make it part of my
life." Goanet looks forward to many more
articles from Goa.
Incidentally, October 4 is Domnic's
birthday, so warm greetings to him. The

------------------------------------------

Music is the soul of the cosmos. It is found everywhere from
the rustling of the trees, to the playful streams, to the
pitter-patter of the raindrops, and in every human being.

Boy, am I glad I was born and bred in Goa? People keep asking
me: "What is it that makes you like Goa so much? What has Goa
given you so much that you write so much about it?" My plain
answer: "Don't ask what Goa has given you but ask yourself
what you have given to Goa!"

As far as I am concerned, Goa became part of my life the
moment I was placed on this planet and breathed the first
breath; since then I have breathed nothing but Goa's nature.
In my eyes, Goa was and still remains the same. I may be
writing on the past of Goa, but by the same token I move with
the times; anyone who does not move with the times and merely
clings on to the past is bound to have a tough time surviving
in today's world where 'survival of the fittest' is the norm.

Life in the countryside is always wonderful but it was much
more so during our childhood in the Fifties and Sixties! I
love to wake up listening to nature's sounds -- the birds
singing all around -- because that's the way I grew up. Yes,
I am talking about my childhood from over half a century ago.

In the good old days, nature formed part of our lives. There
was no alarm clock, no mobile alarms, no TVs with wake up
systems, and the like. We went to sleep and were awakened by
the nature. We woke up to the birds' chirping, squirrels'
singing, cats' meowing, dogs' barking, goats' bleating, cows'
bellowing.... everything around us bustled in a natural way.

The first sounds one hears in Goa at daybreak are the cawing
of crows -- caw-caw; caw-caw; caw-caw. This is followed by
cuckoos' cries -- ku-uu, ku-uu, ku-uu, ku-uu and
'kdd?'u-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du,
kdd'du-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du,
'kdd'du-kdd'du, kdd'du-kdd'du!

While we were asleep and watched adventurous dreams, suddenly
the sounds of nature would reach our ears and wake us up.

We would get up, sit on our 'bixeannem' (bedding), and say
our morning prayers while still rubbing our eyes, and then
step out in the balcony of the house to watch nature's wonder
in the form of birds and animals.

We would then reach for the leaves of a mango, cashew or
guava tree in order to prepare a rough and ready brush to
brush our teeth -- we brushed our teeth to the rhythm of
birds' chirping.

The only common musical instrument we saw during
our childhood was a 'rebek' (violin), which
Pedrinho Fernandes, mistir (mestre or choirmaster)
of Anjuna church held in his hand like a 'piddo'
(coconut leaf stem) and played every day at mass
and on every occasion, including a ladainha
(litany) whenever he was called to play. The
violin was like a toy for him.

The only musical instrument that children could lay their
hands on freely was a 'mouth organ', which was one of the
items we waited to buy from a 'festachi feri' (feast fair)
whenever there was a major church feast. Once we owned it, we
would go on playing it until our parents called out and
ordered us to stop breathing into it and turning them deaf.
Many of us played it with great perfection without having any
musical background or knowing music notes -- music came to us
naturally; maybe because it runs in our veins!

However, there was only one musical instrument that everyone
was naturally gifted with -- 'fionn' or 'xellani' (whistle).
No sooner a child reached the age of around 10, he would
attempt to whistle, and within a short time he was able to
whistle a few tunes.

It was an art every child was gifted with, which we rarely
witness these days. By the time we had entered our teens, we
would have mastered the art and become experts in whistling.

Nowadays, people use the term 'many moons' to refer to many
years. In the past, people used 'ek pavs, don pavs, tin pavs,
adi', referring to the number of monsoon seasons that had
gone by to refer to the passage of years.

Most children are able to whistle properly by the age of 13,
which happens to be the beginning of the teens. When the
elderly noticed teenagers whistle, they commented: 'Cheddo
toiear zalo; anik don-tin pavs vochonk zai uprant dhirieank
toiear zatolo.' (The boy has come of age; he will be ready
for bullfights after two-to-three more monsoons).

There are many types of whistles; I will mention a few.

HUMMING WHISTLE: Children always watch and follow. Every
time their relatives and friends whistled, they gazed at
them, imitated them and picked up the art of whistling.
Humming whistle is practiced slowly while a person goes about
his daily chores, walks or works -- it identifies his mood.

LOUD WHISTLE: Here again, this whistle is picked up by
following others. In order to blow a loud whistle one joins
the thumb and index finger of the right hand (or left hand)
giving it almost shape of a zero. One then places both
fingers under the tongue, folds its tip and breathes out air
forcibly through opening of the mouth thus producing a
whistle which can be distinctly heard over a long distance.

If repeated continuously, it can be quite irritating.

MELODIOUS WHISTLE: One is able to whistle melodious tunes
only when one has mastered the art of whistling. During our
teens, we mastered certain tunes and went about whistling
them proudly while we walked to school, or rode the bicycle.

Whenever Goan singers explain the tune of their songs to a
music director or writer, they usually whistle and convey the
tune and the pitch, which are repeated until music writer
grasps the tune and writes down the music in the form of
'solfas' or music notes.

The only public entertainment half a century ago was either a
'zagor' or a 'tiatr'. The moment people left the 'mattov',
male members of the audience whistled their favourite tunes in
various pitches, which they had just picked up from the zagor
or tiatr, making it sound like a symphony. They continued to
whistle the tunes until they reached home. Some even whistle
in their dreams!

The only vehicle a few could afford to buy in the
Fifties was a bicycle. Anyone who rode it,
whistled while he traveled on it.

The Goan 'render' (toddy taper) is always in jolly mood; he
is gifted with music. He is at his best when playing the
traditional band consisting of 'ghumott', 'madhiem' and
'kansaiem' (traditional Goan drum and other instruments).
Besides murmuring tunes he also whistles as he climbs up and
down a coconut tree. It's wonderful to watch him sing and
whistle at work!

Many times, the late Alfred Rose began the introduction of
his songs on the stage by whistling the tune; he also
whistled during interlude of a song.

The theme music of many Western movies of yesteryears,
especially those which feature Clint Eastwood, begins with a
whistling tune. Oh, I just love whistle music!

Half a century ago, females did not enjoy freedom
in the society; they were controlled by chauvinist
males. As such, riding a bicycle or whistling was
considered a manly act. However, times have now
changed -- man and woman are considered equal. A
woman now rides a bicycle and motorbike, drives a
car, steers ships and aircrafts, including fighter
jets, and also whistles as good as or better than
a man.

They say a person cannot be good at everything. I have had
an adventurous and mischievous childhood but I also missed
out on some aspects of life. I was and am extremely good in
whistling tunes but I never learned to whistle the 'loud
whistle.'

In 1970, my father came down for good from Kuwait. One of
our relatives, a girl from Salcete, visited my place. She
had lunch and was ready to depart by the 2:30 p.m. bus, which
plied between Siolim and Betim. Somehow, the girl was slow in
leaving the house. As a result, the bus passed by our house,
which is only about four meters away from the road.

My father looked at me and said: "Fionn ghal ani bosik
thamboi re!" (Whistle and stop the bus!) I just kept quiet
and bowed my head in shame because I couldn't whistle the
loud whistle. My father the placed his fingers in his mouth
and whistled as loudly as he could, but the bus had by then
crossed over three hundred meters; so, it was in vain.

My father didn?t say anything but gave me a surprised look as
if to say: "What a shame; my adult son doesn't know how to
whistle?" Finally, I ended up reaching the girl to her place
in Benaulim on my Honda motorcycle. My daughter is an expert
in whistling the loud whistle -- where father failed,
the daughter has picked up!

In the past, there were special whistle tunes which were used
to call out to girlfriends or to send them signals. Lovers
also used a looking mirror to send out the sun's reflection
from a boyfriend's bolkanv to a girlfriend's! Wasn't that
cute, instead of a mobile phone?

Music is a balm of sorts, they say -- it helps soothe the
pain. Whistling is a sort of relaxation to the mind. It
indicates the mood of a person -- whether happy or sad.
Practically, everyone on his way to work and back, whistled.
The 'pageli' whistled as good as the 'render'. They whistled
throughout their journey from Baga or Calangute to Xapora and
back.

We were so obsessed with whistling that we even
went to the extent of having pet birds. Many of us
raised birds like the 'buchunddi' (bulbul),
'sanvor' or 'maina' (megpie), 'kir' (parrot), and
the like. We taught these birds to sing tunes,
which they did with little variation. They became
part of our lives, so much so we would feed them
with our mouth. We would munch 'bazlele chonnem'
(fried grams), gather it on our tongue in the form
of a 'gulli' (ball), open our mouth and make the
birds eat by pecking at it!

That reminds me of an African grey parrot. Many Africanders
brought with them back home African parrots, which I think
were called Casacu. One was donated to the Anjuna church in
the early Fifties.

We all know that African Greys are among the best mimicking
parrot. They are alert, highly intelligent, gentle and
affectionate. African Greys have been referred to as the
perfect mix of brains and beauty!

The parish priest and the curate taught the Casacu different
types of whistles as well as Konkani greetings like "Dev boro
dis dinv" (Good morning); "Tum koso asa re?" (How are you,
man?); "Padr Vigar ghara nam; faleam ieo" (The vicar is not
in; come tomorrow); and the like. At the same time,
church-employed pede or bhaia taught the parrot Konkani
greetings full of bad words, which the parrot picked up
faster and better and used them more often than the polite
greetings. The result? Every visitor to the church was
insulted, and the parish priest had no other alternative but
to dispose of the parrot!

Till today, when my favorite numbers are played on FM radio,
or when I listen to Konkani songs on Konkani Radio Goaworld
from Kuwait [http://www.goa-world.com/goa/music], or play
Konkani song cassettes or CDs, I whistle along simultaneously
and derive double pleasure!

That's all for now from Dom's antique shelf!

My ‘tiatristponn’ in Bahrain

My ‘tiatristponn’ lay dormant in me for over two decades. Just like Kuwait
tiatrists, I began my ‘tiatristponn’ in Bahrain, as a ‘Partist’, from 1973
to 1980. I had saved some handbills of tiatros I acted in and left them at
home but my wife doesn’t seem to find them; perhaps, they got misplaced.
I got my first break through Zefferino Silveira (from Calangute) in his
tiatr “SIRVIDOR.” Actually, I was assigned a prompter’s job but suddenly
the main ‘partist’ who was doing bhattkar’s/father’s role backed out. This
is where Zefferino asked me to do the role which I did with great
perfection.

Zefferino used to be the make-up man for Bombay tiatrists until he came to
Bahrain. He is also the person who presented a “Zagor-cum-tiatr” with
gumttam-madhiim-kansaiim on the stage in Mapusa in the early 1980’s. I
learned through Jessie Dias, the stage actress from Anjuna, last May that
Zefferino is now in England. Zefferino, if you read this message and if you
remember any names of the tiatros I acted in Bahrain, please let me know or
you may post them on Goanet.

I was next booked by the late Vincent de Saligao for the hero’s role in one
of his dramas in which his daughter, Luiza de Saligao, was the heroine; she
also acted with me as a heroine in one more tiatro – sorry I can’t remember
the names. Luiza, if you read this message in Singapore, please let me know
the names of the tiatros we acted together or you may post them on Goanet.

I played a variety of roles in dozens of tiatros in Bahrain during the
above-mentioned period. Miss Santana from Candolim acted with me as heroine
in most of the tiatros. Mrs. Santana Nunes (w/o Joaquim Nunes - St. Inez –
he was one of the best hockey goalkeepers of the YGSC in the 1970’s,) if you
read this message, please let me know the names of all the tiatros we acted
together in Bahrain or you may post them on Goanet. Martha D’Souza, Maria
Fonseca, Jessie (Mangalorean), Mrs. Blanche Goveia (w/o Jimmy Goveia –
Mangalorean), Lancy Sequeira (Mangalorean singer), John Mendonsa, Luis Frois
of the Gulf Daily News – if you read this message please let me know the
names of tiatros we acted in or you may post them on Goanet.

I was mainly associated with the late Peter-de-Morjim (Peter Mascarenhas,
originally from Morjim but resident of Bandra, Bombay) and Mario Alphonso
from Salcette who I believe is still in Bahrain. Both these gentlemen are
very good actors, comedians, singers, writers, composers and directors.
They presented 2-3 dramas/year under the banner “MM Production” (Mario &
Morjim Production); I acted in all their tiatros. I could recall only two
names “MHOZO PUT” and “VISVAS GHATH” by Peter-de-Morjim. Mario, if you read
this message please let me know the names of all “MM Production” tiatros
that we acted in or you may post them on Goanet.

During my tenure as the General Secretary of the Young Goans Sports Club
(YGSC) - now Young Goans Club (YGC), we brought Bombay professional
tiatrists to Bahrain for the first time. They were: The late Jacinto Vaz,
Mary Vaz, C. Alvares, Betty Fernandes and Remie Colaco; Cyriaco Dias was
already employed in Bahrain. Altogether, we staged 5 tiatros: (1) KEDNAM
UDETOLO TO DIS by C. Alvares, (2) GHORACHEM SUKH by Remie Colaco, (3)
GHOVACHEM GHOR by Jacinto Vaz, (4) FARIKPONN by Cyriaco Dias and (5) another
tiatr by Cyriaco Dias - I don’t remember the name. I played lead roles in
all these dramas.

I also acted in two more professional tiatros in Bahrain - sorry, cannot
recall their names - (1) by the late Bab Peter and (2) by Rico Rod. The
following actors/actresses participated in both the tiatros: Alfred Rose,
Bab Peter, M. Boyer, Ophelia (Babli was just six months old), Antonette,
Fatima, Rico Rod, Titta Pretto, Joe Rose and Seby Coutinho. If I meet any
of these actors barring the first three (M. Boyer cannot speak,) I will find
out the names of those tiatros and post them on Goanet. The late Chris
Perry provided music for both tiatros. Chris was then employed with the
Moon Plaza Hotel in Juffair.

I acted only once in M. Boyer’s tiatr in Mapusa; it was a small role - that
of a doctor. Here again, I cannot recall the name, but surely Joe Rose will
remember it because both of us exchanged dialogues in the scene.

While in Bahrain, I was also closely associated with the Mangalorean
community through the Karnataka Sports Club. The Goan tiatrist fraternity
in Bahrain at the time succeeded in bringing the two communities closer by
staging specially written tiatros with Goan and Mangalorean cast. We
successfully staged four such joint-ventures. In one of the tiatros, the
story was based on Goan-Mangalorean families. The late Baptist Mendonsa
(Mangalorean – was employed with the Gulf Hotel) and the late
Peter-de-Morjim jointly wrote and directed the tiatros. Peter-de-Morjim,
Mario Alphonso and I are the founder members of the Konkan Singers’ Club
(KSC) which was founded by raising funds through tiatros. Cyril D’Souza, a
Mangalorean, was the brain behind the formation of the KSC. He and several
others brought many advertisements which helped us raise funds for the new
club.

Tiatr band players in those days came from the Bahrain Police Band. The
band was headed by the late Custodio Fernandes (rhythm guitarist), late
Cajetan or Cajie Fernandes (drummer & solfist - he wrote solfas for our
tiatros; he played for Bombay professional tiatrists before he came to
Bahrain), Raposo Fernandes (sexaphone), Carlito Fernandes (trumpet; I
believe he still plays for tiatros in Goa and gives music to cassettes/CDs)
and there was another guy who played clarinet – sorry I cannot recall his
name. I will try and visit Carlito when I am in Goa next; I think he lives
in Benaulim. He played music for all the tiatros I acted in; he might
remember some of the names of tiatros.

The entrance fee for a tiatr in Bahrain in the 1970’s was Fils 800 and 500
respectively. The fee of Fils 800 was later raised to BD.1.000.

It was quite difficult in those days to stage tiatros in Bahrain. We mostly
suffered losses but we didn’t give up; we continued to stage tiatros for the
love of Konkani and Goans there. Every time we staged a drama, we had to
pay BD.5.000 as hire charges for “pod’de” (drops.) We came across an artist
- Domnic Viegas from Tivim who painted four drops for us free of charge.
The painting job was carried out on the terrace of late Seby D’Souza’s
residence in Manama. Seby hailed from Navelim. He also was a tiatrist,
writer and director. I acted in one of his dramas.

All tiatros that we staged in Bahrain in the 1970’s were a one-time event.
As such, one had to give his/her best and prove his/her ability in one
attempt!

It is my desire to give some tiatr performances after I retire my job in two
years time!

Little known fact: BJP cell staged 20 khells to woo South

BJP cell staged 20 khells to woo South - 2009 Elections:

Tiatr and khells was once the medium employed by the Congress and political leaders from Salcete to reach out to the electorate, so to say. The BJP's Cultural Cell staged as many as 20 khells during the just concluded Carnival festivities in South Goa. Parrikar even attended a khell show as the chief guest at Nuvem and appreciated attempts to resurrect the khell. [H]

TWO KONKANI
G E M S R E L E A S E D

By Daniel F De Souza

FAUSTO V DA Costa needs no formal introduction to Goans. The same applies to his music company “Dinfa Productions” which, till now, has given some memorable hit audio CDs and cassettes to Konkani music lovers. The most recent gems that have been produced by Dinfa Productions are Goenchim Mannkam Motiam a re-mix of old Konkani hits, and hit songs of the late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa’s award-winning play Niz Mog.

Goenchim Mannkam Motiam is a remix CD of hits of renowned composers and singers of yesteryear. Selected hits of Minguel Rod, Kid Boxer, Young Menezes, M. Boyer, Remmie Colaco, C. Alvares, H. Briton, Alfred Rose, Frank Fernand, Shailendra Singh, Bhupendra, Amit Kumar and Antonette are included in the CD.

Goenchim Mannkam Motiam: A remix CD of golden Konkani hits.
Among the several unforgettable hits, one gets to listen to the original version of hits such as Ghovachem Ghor by C. Alvares and Antonette, Girl Friend by H. Briton, Mhaka Poun Hanstai by Alfred and Rita Rose. The CD begins with an old hit solo of M. Boyer, Bhurguim Vo Baulim, rendered by Michael M. and Aitar Kela a fast rap song of Young Menezes sung by Philip T follows. Ghovachem Ghor, in the original voice of the King of Duets late C. Alvares and Antonette, is a delight. Melodious Mumbai-based singer Nephie Rod belts out Amit Kumar’s Noman Tuka Goa.

Philip T and Michael M. combine well to bring you ‘Kid-Young-Rod’ a hit combination of the early sixties. M. Kumar follows next with a romantic solo ‘Kallzachem Sukh’ which was originally sung by Shailendra Singh. H. Briton’s ‘Pandu Lampianv’ is rendered by Michael M. Remmie Colaco’s all time hit song “Ghorachem Sukh” is sung by Francis, but the singer fails to come anywhere close to veteran singer Remmie Colaco either in style or depth. ‘Lawrie Io’ set to the pop beat is rendered well by Anthony San and Jennifer, Anthony San follows later with yet another hit ‘Nixeani Fulam’ originally of Bhupender. It must be said to the credit of the singer Anthony San that in both the above songs he sings far better than the original version. His melodious voice makes pleasant listening.

‘Sopnantle Tiatr’ is a well composed song sung by Peter de Benaulim, this is followed by another duet ‘Sobhit Amchem Goem’ by Jennifer and Allan. Veteran singer Antonette Mendes adds flavour to the CD by her splendid voice singing ‘Mog’, a touching Mando. “Mhaka Poun Hanstai” is yet another original gem coming from the melody king, late Alfred Rose and his wife Rita. “Bobor” a comedy hit song of late Minguel Rod is the last track on the CD sung by Michael M.

This Re-mix version CD has music composed by some great music composers in the likes of Johny Rodrigues, Frank Fernand, Joe Perry, Luis Martins, Alfred Rose, Cruz Jazzwala, and Manuel Alphonso. The CD priced at Rs.200/- comes with a free sing-along lyrics booklet. ‘Goenchim Mannkam Motiam’ with music by Tony Dias, will certainly add variety to your Konkani Music collection. Go ahead pick your copy from the nearest dealer. ‘Niz Mog’ the other CD released by Dinfa Productions contains all the hit songs from Fr. Freddy J. Costa’s tiatr with the same name, which was released in 1985. The CD contains all the hits songs sung by the original artists from the play. All the songs from the tiatr are composed by late Fr. Freddy J. Costa and have rich lyrics with a true Goan flavour. Set to some really soulful music by Fr. Tony Cotta, it is makes some pleasant listening. ‘Niz Mog’, Mogan Hanv Poddon’ ‘Mogan Zaleam Pixim’ and ‘Magtam Upkar’ are some memorable solos rendered by Laura with her crystal clear voice. Melodious voiced singer Young Chico sings ‘Koxtt Dukh Kaddun’ and ‘Maim Ugddas Tuzo’. Young Chico combines once again with Laura to sing a duet ‘Mogan Zaleam Pixim’. He follows once again with Agnela to sing a duet ‘Kalliz Mhojem Kadd’. ‘Mog Tuzo re Cliff’ is another solo rendered by Agnela. All the ten songs are directly related to the main plot of ‘Niz Mog’ and Fr. Freddy Costa himself narrates the story in between the songs.

NIZ MOG: A must buy collection for Konkani music lovers.
The CD contains five bonus tracks ‘Doth Dennem” by Laura and Agnela, ‘Sangati’ by Young Chico, ‘Doxea’ By Laura, ‘Madar Teresa’ by Young Chico and ‘Konknni Bhas’ by Laura. All these five tracks have some really meaningful lyrics. Since these songs were original recorded in the mid-eighties, Young Chico is at the peak of his singing career. His singing is exceptionally good and so are the other female voices too. The music score is written by Fr. Tony Cotta, who also plays the Saxaphone. He is accompanied by Agnelo Dias on the trumpet and the Syndicate Band provides the music. ‘Niz Mog’ was earlier released in the eighties by Dinfa Production on audio cassettes, whereas the same is now released on a CD format. At a time when good Konkani songs with meaningful lyrics and ethnic goan music are scarce to come by, “Niz Mog” provides the much needed relief. The CD is moderately priced at Rs. 150 and is available at all leading music stores in Goa , Mumbai and in the Gulf . ‘Niz Mog’ is certainly a priceless CD of quality songs and original goan music. Make sure you add the same to your ‘must buy’ list.

New Release in August: In the meantime Ace comedian John D’ Silva joins the bandwagon of tiatrists with his latest release ‘UGDDAS” scheduled for release from 1 st August 2004 in all the main cities of Goa. The premier show will be held in Mapusa. Departing from his usual format of non-stop shows, ‘UGDDAS’ is a full fledged tiatr. Seems like John has followed in the footsteps of Roseferns and Prince Jacob in switching over to the tiatr format for a change during the off-season slot. Speaking to John D’Silva I gathered that this is not his first step in producing a tiatr. He had earlier staged his first tiatr entitled “Chukele Roste” some years back. When asked why he preferred to produce a tiatr, John replied “Tiatrs have made a phenomenal comeback and they are very popular in recent times, hence I decided to try something different.” The show boasts of a varied cast with some big names from the Konkani stage. The writer promises the tiatr is an intriguing story with many twists. He has brought together four other top comedians of the Konkani stage apart from himself to provide the comic relief. So comedian Agostinho, Selvy, Luis Bachchan and Joanna will combine with John to produce side-splitting comedy states the writer/director. Some of the topmost and established singers of the Konkani stage are also lined up to strengthen the singing department. I wish John D’Silva all the very best in his new venture.

Long cherished dream of tiatrists finally comes true

Long cherished dream of tiatrists finally comes true
By Elvis Sequeira

The long cherished dream of the tiatr fraternity has finally come true. The faces of tiatrists and those directly or indirectly associated with it, lit with joy as veteran tiatrist Master Vaz lit the traditional lamp to at the inaugural function held at Ravindra Bhavan Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho auditorium, Margao, to mark the opening of the Tiatr Academy. Herald spoke to some veteran tiatrists, to get their views on what this new venture means for tiatrs and tiatrists.
Titta Pretto a veteran tiatrist (who also acted in the Konkani classic movies Nirmonn and Amche Noxib) based in Mumbai and one among those felicitated at the function, felt that “the Tiatr Academy is something good, and that the government has done its job.” He added that “now it’s up to the tiatrists to maintain unity, and make good use of the resources for the betterment of tiatr.”
C D Silva who was also felicitated on the occasion echoed similar sentiments, adding that “the Tiatr Academy has finally become a reality. It is something good and beneficial for tiatrs and tiatrists. He cautioned that “unless and until we tiatrists keep aside our egos, backbiting and personal funds aside, having a Tiatr Academy would be useless.
Jessie Dias, still a force to reckon with among the female artistes stressed that the Tiatr Academy benefits should reach all tiatrists, eligible for it, especially the old and the infirm.” Adding that, “to make this possible, the Academy should collect the bio-data of all professional tiatrists young and old and register them as members of the Academy.”
Echoing Jessie’s sentiments Thomas Antao (music composer-trumpeter) with 67 years experience in tiatrs feels that not only the tiatrists, but all those associated with the different aspects of this art-form – including musicians, set designers, light operators etc, should benefit from the Tiatr Academy. “I am happy that the Tiatr Academy is formed and I sincerely hope that every body associated with the Academy works unitedly so that not only the tiatrist but all those associated with tiatr in different ways, benefit from this project.”
Ophelia the tragedy queen of tiatrs, who also acted in the Konkani classic movies Nirmonn and Amche Noxib (based in Mumbai) was another artiste to be felicitated on the occasion felicitated but could not make it to the inaugural function. Speaking to her via the telephone, Ophelia revealed that she was informed by the authorities at the last moment and could not make it to the function. Explaining her predicament she explained, “I cannot travel alone. If I was informed well in advance I would have made arrangements to travel by air.”
“Anyway I am glad that the Tiatr Academy has been formed and I hope that those at the helm of affairs, work in the right direction.” She added nostalgically, I hope they remember my sister Miss Mohana who was the first lady to act in tiatrs commercially and was an inspiration to all female artistes.”
Luis V Quadros known in tiatr circles as A P Rojols is a lights and set designer from Raia. He has designed lights and sets for various tiatr directors for the last 29 years. He states, “being physically challenged, I have to face a lot of hardships, but it is my love for this particular Goan art form that drives me on. At last an organisation, for the betterment of tiatrs and tiatrist has been formed. Let us hope that it unites all tiatrist and others associated with it.”
Mario Menezes known as the tragedy king of the Konkani stage and a well known writer director of tiatrs, believed that “the tiatr academy was long overdue and now that it has finally come into existence.” He went a step ahead and exhorted all those involved in the tiatr fraternity, “come let’s us all work unitedly for the betterment of tiatr, let us work for a better tomorrow rather than fighting over petty differences. He appealed to his fellowmen and women saying, “Today I am a member of the executive committee of the tiatr academy and we are always open to opinion and suggestions.”
Michael Gracias, writer and director of an experimental tiatrs and also editor- in- chief of the Konkani monthly magazine Jivit hurrahed the coming into existence of the academy as “the best thing to happen, taking into view the popularity of these forms of art and the patronage it receives from the Konkani speaking people in and outside Goa. The present day tiatr scenario does not require any patronage from the government because it is fully supported by the people of Goa. Adding that “the Tiatr Academy is required for research and documentation as the authorities at the helm of affairs be it the Goa Konkanni Academy, the Art And Culture Department or the Kala Academy has only paid lip service in the past.

Konkani Tiatr "Him Tujim Pavlam" touches ‘super hit’

"Him Tujim Pavlam" touches ‘super hit’

Mark among UK tiatr lovers!
June 6th 2009, witnessed a new era for the Konkani Stage in UK under the auspices of Konkani Dramatic Association, UK . That day they staged the tiatr called Him Tujim Pavlam.

The unique, novel script portrays a conflux of ideas. The script is crisp with intricately woven outstanding dialogues and humorous comedy.

Poignant Plot: Him Tujim Pavlam highlights the mindset of the immigrants to Europe. Romald (Michael) and Betty (Mary), the Goan couple settled in UK try to enlighten their only daughter Merlyn (Meryln) against her blind pursuit of aping the English lifestyle. They realistically reproach her that her origin remains unchanged even under the alien mask. Alvaro played as her father-in-law. The protagonist is a woman of substance - a trustworthy wife, a caring daughter-in-law and a valiant lady who copes with the final stages of cancer. The tactful Sarah devises a plan to unite Floyd with Merlyn under the guise of them both sharing an intimate friendship. Hence, her untimely death would not leave a void in the family. But, the doctor unveils the illness which exposes Sarah to be a woman both “Bold and Beautiful” in her deathbed.

Cast Performance: Jr. Nelson gave marvelous performances both as an actor and singer. His powerful solo on M. Boyer was a class of its own.
Felcy gave a stellar performance as Sarah Floyd’s (Junior Nelson) wife who strives to bring back the lost glory after the demise of her mother-in-law. However, her dreams are shattered when she is diagnosed as having cancer.
The comedy by Luis Bachan, Joana, Victor de Verem, Judy and after all comedian Santan was a blast. It was a laugh riot. They were swift and compact in their presentation. Vow!

Kudos to comedian Santan who staged his maiden Konkani drama- a suspense thriller, that was offset with hilarious comedy the melodious and poignant title song Him Tujim Pavlam at Crydon, Swindon and Wembley to a capacity crowd. The show was unanimously applauded as hit.

Melodious Music: Another main reason for the great response that Him Tujim Pavlam was given can be attributed to the man in the foreground- James Vaz, the Band Leader. An aesthetic musician, he produced the original music that harmoniously blended with his fellow musicians Francis (bass), Babit (lead) and Polly (drums). The interlude set the tone and time for the performers and the background score filled in the sound effects. The music simply motivated the singers and inspired the listeners. Adding to this euphoria was the Drum Solo by (Polly) which was the brain child of the band leader himself. This was efficiently and creatively supported by the brilliant stage setting and light effects by Jhonny Damaciano and Francis.

So, hats off to Santan who dared to break through new barriers and create a niche for him. The super hit was not based just on the characterization but the very concept of the drama. The whole performance driven troupe displayed a standard and quality through this innovative talent. This has definitely raised the hopes for the Konkani Stage for further development and a long standing for the future in the UK.

Schemes and Activities of Tiatr Academy Goa for 2009 – 2010.

Tiatr Academy of Goa
Panaji – Goa

Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) addressed the Goa Press on 3rd July, 2009 in order to announce about the schemes and activities of the TAG for the financial year 2009 – 2010.

The details are as under:

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) was officially inaugurated on 16th Februray, 2009 by the Hon. Chief Minister of Goa, Shri. Digamber Kamat. Soon after the inauguration, Code of Conduct due to Parliamentary Election was announced by the Election Commission of India. Government could not transfer any funds to TAG and the TAG could not do any activities. It is only when the Code of Conduct was lifted by the Election Commission in the month of May, the TAG started functioning.

A meeting of all Tiatr artistes of Goa was also convened and their views were also taken for planning for the year 2009 - 2010

The activities planned for the year 2009 – 2010 are as follows:

(i) Documentation of the history of Tiatr
(a) TAG has resolved to document the history and experiences in the
field of Tiatr by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers,
directors, actors, singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light
effects, background music, etc. etc. on VCDs and DVDs.

(b) It was also resolved to document the history of tiatr by publishing books
on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics related to Tiatr,
its song and music.

(ii) Encouragement to production of Tiatr in villages
TAG has resolved to formulate a scheme to promote tiatr activities in the villages among the children and youth by giving them the required financial and technical support. Institutions / groups / dramatic troupes / etc interested in promoting Tiatr culture among the children/youth in the villages can take benefit of this scheme. The participating children/youth must be the residents of that village and their age should not exceed 20 years. Maximum of five senior artistes from the same village will be permitted to act in that tiatr.

(iii) Promotion of Tiatr through educational institutions
TAG felt that the students in the schools and colleges must be made aware of the Goan traditional Tiatr – its history and its importance in the Goan society. Therefore it has been resolved to formulate a scheme to promote Goan Tiatr through schools, colleges and other educational institutions by organizing seminars, lectures, etc. for the students of educational institutions.

(iv) Raising the standard of Tiatr
(a) Improvement of the standard of Tiatr in all respects is the need of the hour. Therefore TAG has unanimously resolved to organize orkshops/seminars, etc on various aspects of Tiatr such as Script writing, Acting, Direction, Light Effects, Stage Setting, Back Ground music, etc. by inviting knowledgeable resource persons in theatre art from other languages. It has also been decided that TAG may collaborate with any other institution/organization while conducting these seminars/workshops, etc.
(b) Another way to learn more about theatre art and to improve the standard of tiatr is
to witness high standard dramas from other languages and gain more knowledge
about the new trends in modern theatre. Therefore TAG has resolved to encourage
tiatr artistes to witness high standard dramas in other languages which are staged in
Goa by providing them the required incentives.

(v) Preservation of Tiatr literature
Tiatr literature needs to be preserved for posterity. This can be done by publishing books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores, etc. Therefore TAG has resolved to publish books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores, etc.

(vi) Promotion of Tiatr music
The TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing instruments such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day and that these two instruments are very important in the music of the Tiatr. In view of this the TAG has resolved to formulate a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance.

(vii) Reaching out to Goans all over the world
TAG is of the opinion that Tiatr Academy of Goa should reach out to Goans living in different parts of the world through internet and through other modern means of mass communication. Hence TAG has resolved to create a Web-site of Tiatr Academy of Goa giving detailed information of TAG and its activities.

(viii) Promotion of Award Winning Tiatr
Kala Academy, Goa organizes Tiatr Festivals every year in Panjim only. But the producers and directors of award winning tiatrs have no opportunity to stage these award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa. Inspite of having a good standard these plays do not attract large audience because they have mostly amateur artistes. Therefore TAG has resolved to organize festivals of first three award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa so that the people from other parts of Goa too have the opportunity to witness these tiatrs. It is also decided to organize these festivals in collaboration with other institutions in case such institutions come forward to organize it.

(ix) Remembering Tiatr artistes of yester years
Tiatr stage produced great tiatr personalities in the past. These pioneers of tiatr are no more with us. Their contribution to the Goan tiatr is immense. Unfortunately today’s younger generation do not know anything about them.
In order to make our younger generation aware of their contribution and sacrifices the TAG has resolved as under:
(i) To commemorate their jubilee birth anniversaries i.e. 75th , 100th, 125th, etc birth anniversaries by organizing special functions and appropriate programmes.
(ii) To give financial support to troupes/ institutions for producing special programmes on the lives of particular artistes or a programme of the tiatrs staged and songs rendered by those artistes in the past.
(iii) To celebrate the Birth Centenary of A. R. Souza Ferrao TAG has resolved to stage more shows of the tiatr “Gouyo Put” written by late Souza Ferrao, directed by Anil Kumar at Panjim, Mapusa, Ponda, etc. respectively in collaboration of A. R. Souza Ferrao Cultural & Charitable Trust.

(x) Provision of financial assistance to troupes going to Bombay/Poona
Goan Tiatr was born in Bombay. There was a time when the Tiatr culture was more prominent in Bombay than in Goa. Dramatic troupes from Bombay used to come to Goa to stage their tiatrs. In the recent years the scenario has completely changed. There are very few tiatr artistes left in Bombay today. Hence dramatic troupes from Goa go to Bombay and stage their shows in Bombay and Poona. Many a time staging tiatrs in Bombay/Poona by Goan dramatic troupes is not a financially viable proposition.
Therefore TAG has resolved to give financial support to the tune of Rs. 25,000/ - to any dramatic troupe going to Bombay/Poona to stage its tiatrs there provided that at least five shows of the same tiatr are staged during that trip.

(xi) Promotion of Folk Songs
Mando/Dulpods and other folksongs is a part and parcel of our culture. These folksongs have always found place on the tiatr stage. Therefore TAG has resolved to promote Mando/Dulpods and other folk songs by giving incentives to deserving folk artistes and folk troupes.

(xii) Encouragement to Script Writers and Lyricists
In order to encourage the script writers and lyricists to write scripts and lyrics of high standard, TAG has decided to organize literary competitions for Script writing and for Lyrics writings and to give awards for best script and best lyrics writers.

(xiii) Museum & Library
There is a lot of Tiatr material in the form of manuscripts, hand written lyrics, printed books, old HMV records, CDs and DVDs etc, scattered here and there with government authorities as well as with private individuals. Unfortunately required care of this valuable material has not been taken.
Therefore the TAG has resolved to collect this material if possible and preserve it for posterity by establishing a Museum and a library of TAG on a long term basis.

(xiv) Insurance for Tiatr artistes
The TAG felt that many tiatr artistes face a lot of financial problems in case of accidents. Therefore it was resolved to insure all artistes of the Tiatr stage under Group Insurance Cover. Such insurance will be beneficial to tiatr artistes in case of an accidental death or accidental injury takes place.

(xv) Directory of Tiatr artistes
In order to have up to date information about the Tiatr artistes living in and out of Goa TAG has resolved to publish a directory of all Tiatr artistes on priority.
(xvi) ID Cards for Tiatr artistes
There was a request to issue an ID Card to interested Tiatr artiste. TAG has resolved to issue such ID Cards to bonafide Tiatr artistes only.

(xvii) Awards for excellence.
Awards play an important role in the lives of artistes. Those on the stage, if awarded, get encouragement to perform better in future and those who are no more active on the stage feel proud because their contribution to the Tiatr stage is recognized. Therefore the TAG has resolved to institute the following awards:
(a) To give awards in all departments of Tiatr such as acting, direction, singing, script writing, stage setting, light effects, back ground music, etc by organizing a Tiatr festival of commercial tiatrs every year.
(b) To give awards to audio albums of Konkani songs i.e. for the best singers (male & female), for the best lyricist, for the best musician and for the best Audio album.
(c) Life time achievement awards to tiatr artistes of yester years.

(xviii) Formation of Sub-Committees
Numerous sub-committees are formed in order to implement the schemes formulated by TAG. Functioning in full swing will take place after the TAG gets the required staff.

(xix) Office Premises for TAG:
TAG will have Office premises of its own soon. Hon. Chief Minister, Shri. Digambar Kamat has made a provision of 1.5 crores of rupees for the purchase of the premises, to do interior decoration, to purchase office equipment and to purchase a vehicle for TAG. The process for acquiring an office premises to TAG is going on.

Lidvinda Anastasia Clara Correia e Dias, known as Clara
on the Konkani stage, was born in Mumbai on April 14, 1946.

While she was singing for the Cuckoo Band, she was spotted
by a tiatrist Domnick Vaz. Soon the talented singer began performing
in the plays of renowned Konkani tiatrists.

She also acted in Konkani films "Zababdari" and "Moriad".

She has been consistently acting for Roseferns for the last 21 years.

To date she has performed in more than 150 plays. While adressing the audience on behalf of the artists who had been felicitated, Clara thanked the tiatr audience, which she claimed had spurred her to give better pefromances. She said that she was thankful to her understanding parents, who allowed her to participate in the tiatr, at a time when few parents encouraged their daughters to take to acting.

Socorro de Verna

Socorro Pieadade Fremiot Fernandes, popularly known as Socorro de Verna, is a veteran playwright, director and actor in the field of khell tiatr.

In 1962, he peformed "Jungle King" and "Bhattkarachi Choli" in Bombay besides scores of others he staged along with his troupe, particularly at the time of Carnival and Easter.

Several of his plays have been broadcast by All India Radio, Panjim. He has two Konkani novels—"Amchem Noxib" and "Ghatki Bhoinn"—to his credit.

Public Meeting of tiatrists and MLAs

Public Meeting of tiatrists and MLAs

Public Meeting of Tiatrists and MLAs Most of the present MLAs of Goa State assembly have been elected by a substantial number of voters who fully support Roman script for Konknni. Some of these MLAs have expressed their views in private on the issue of including Roman script in the Official Language Act 1987. So far only a few MLAs have publicly voiced their support to this issue.

Therefore, Tiatrists of Goa have now unanimously resolved at a meeting held at Margao today, to invite all the elected representatives of the Goa Legislative Assembly, to attend a public meeting to be convened on Tuesday 25th July 2006 at T. B. Cunha Hall Panaji at 10.30. a.m. to clarify their stand on the demand for amendment to the Official Language Act 1987 wherein the word "/Roman" in section 2(c) will be added. The meeting will be held in the presence of the Press and media.

Tiatrists are of the opinion that the presence of all MLAs is of utmost importance, considering the short time available to introduce a Bill to that effect before the end of the current Assembly Session itself.

Should they fail to avail this opportunity to attend this meet and express their views on this issue at this meeting it will be construed that they are not in favour of the amendment. According to the response of the MLAs, tiatrists will prepare their future course of action to meet their demand. Tiatrists have taken a pledge that they will fight tooth and nail till their demand for including Roman script in the Language Act is achieved.

'Mumbai-based tiatrists ignored'

'Mumbai-based tiatrists ignored'
2 Jun 2009/Times of India (Goa Edition)

MARGAO: Non-recognition of the work of Mumbai-based tiatrists, especially while picking awardees for the Goa State Awards, is great injustice to the
efforts of these artistes, said veteran tiatrist Cyriaco Dias. He was speaking at legendary tiatrist A R Souza Ferrao's birth centenary celebrations at the Ravindra Bhavan in Margao on Monday.

"The work of Mumbai-based tiatrists is never taken into consideration at the Goa State Awards, although their contribution to the development of tiatr is phenomenal," said Dias at the programme organized by A R Ferrao Cultural and Charitable Trust.

While explaining the reason for the same, Tiatr Academy of Goa president Tomazinho Cardozo said, "Non-recognition of these tiatrists is due to the domicile clause. But I admit that it is injustice to the enormous contribution of Mumbai-based tiatrists."

Chief minister Digambar Kamat, who was the chief guest, stated that his government would always work towards recognizing the efforts of the tiatr fraternity in protecting Goa's identity. "The sanctioned amount of Rs 1.5 crore towards the newly formed tiatr academy is a contribution of the state to set up the academy building," he said.

Deputy speaker Mauvin Godinho felt that the directorate of art and culture should play a prime role in recognizing the efforts of tiatrist in preserving Goa's identity.

A website and a book dedicated to Ferrao were also launched on the occasion.

Meet Tiatrist IGNATIUS De XELVON

http://www.avmaroc.com/videos/meet+tiatrist-cLiPVM676qfqZsw.html

IGNATIUS - Making Waves

IGNATIUS de Xelvon from Sanvordem has emerged as a
highly professional artiste on the Konkani stage both
for his acting as well as singing.

Making waves in Kuwait he brought out his first
Konkani album “Liplele Tiatrist” which proved to be a
hit. He attributes the success of his album to Jose
Rod for not only singing two memorable songs but
introducing him to VP Sinari & Co.

Encouraged by the success, Ignatius is all set to
release his second album. Be also featured in Konkani
albums like William de Curtorim’s “Montreancho Rock &
Roll”, Cajetan de Cuurtorim’s “Marekar Acxident” and
“Plane Crash”.

It was at the age of 14 that Ignatius was first
introduced to the Konkani stage. That was in Santan
D’Costa’s tiatr in his native place. From a very young
age, he took to singing and under the guidance of
seniors coupled with hard work, Ignatius turned into
an outstanding singer.

He didn’t stop at that as he soon discovered his
acting talents. He took up acting with professional
actors. His versatility and talents were recognized
outside the Konkani world and he was ‘launched’ on the
Marathi and Hindi stage for his acting in orchestras
and dramas.

His memorable role in Devidas Baba’s play “Ek Full
Doxinchem” where he enacted the character role of
‘Mama’ to a spellbound audience. It was this ‘Mama’
magic that probably propelled him to accept more
character roles before he was recognized as character
actor of repute.

The multi-faceted personality in him has also produced
comedy skits. He did several comedy skits some of them
with veteran Konkani artistes like Hortencio Pereira,
late Greg/Sabina and even Goa’s Charlie Chaplain of

ABOUT IGNATIUS DE XELVON:
Ignatius de Xelvon - the Konkani stage artiste hails from the village of
Xelvon, Sanvordem and resides in Kuwait for the past several years. Does
this young man require an introduction?

Here I have this artiste, who is all set to give his best once again in
upcoming Konkani one act play competition being organized by United Club of
Utorda. Recently I spoke to Ignatius as to know what makes him to be
devoted to "character acting" and his interest for the Konkani stage.
Ignatius replied:
"Acting is in my blood as I come from theatrical background".

Ignatius was first seen on Konkani stage at the age of eleven in Santan
D'Costa's tiatr held in his native place. As a child he has shown his love
for singing and soon turned into an outstanding singer. Later he took up
acting with professional actors. Besides singing and acting in Konkani
tiatrs his talents and versality were well recognized by others as well and
have acted in Marathi and Hindi stage shows (as part of an orchestra) and
dramas.

His memorable role is in Devidas Baba's play "EK FULL DOXINCHEM" where he
enacted the character role of "MAMA" to a spellbound audience. It was "this
MAMA's magic" which lead him to accept more character roles and then
propelled him to be known as "character actor" of repute. During our
discourse, the question came whether he can do the comedy roles or not? And
once again the answer was "yes". He did numerous comedy skits and side-show
items alongside veteran Konkani stage artistes including Hortencio Pereira,
late Greg (Greg/Sabina fame) and Goa's immortal Charlie Chaplin "late
Jacinto Vaz", etc.

He has acted with the stalwarts of Konkani stage like Mike Metha's
"POLITIC", John Claro's "TAMDI MATI", as well as for Tony Car's "ORDHO
KAZARI" and Milagres de Chandor's "RAKHNO". He is fond of traditional Khell
Tiatr (which are mostly performed on open ground), and he enjoyed acting in
the same for Bernard Cardoz, Salvaldor Alphonso, Martin de Macazana - to
name the few. He appeared as a guest artiste for Prince Jacob's show, where
appreciation and praises were showered for his hard work. To his credit he
has his first Konkani album "LIPLELE TIATRIST" with meaningful songs, and
also featured in others Konkani albums of William de Curtorim's (Montreancho
Rock N Roll), Cajetan de Curtorim's (Marekar Acxident Plane Crash). He
attributes the success of his Konkani album "LIPLELE TIATRIST" to Jose Rod
for not only singing two memorable songs that brought extra nostalgia for
album and is thankful for Jose Rod's kindness in introducing him to "V.P.
Sinari". Alister Miranda wrote in the Gomantak Times "The Sinaris music
label has unleashed yet another hot-selling Konkani audio. This time Sinaris
has backed a relatively unknown Konkani singer Ignatius de Xelvon and his
maiden presentation "Liplele Tiatrist" and the audio does not disappoint. In
fact, pleasant surprises keep jumping our right through".

Ignatius de Xelvon's prowess is infinite and the evidence is United Club of
Utorda (UCU's) First One Act Play Competition held in Kuwait in 2000.
Ignatius was declared "Best Actor" in Simon Gonsalves's play "DEVACHO GHUTT
DEV ZANAM". In KHK-YRC organized one act play competition, Ignatius
surprised and mesmerized all by directing "EK ZADD VODDACHEM" to lift the

Him Tujim Pavlam touches ‘super hit’

Him Tujim Pavlam touches ‘super hit’
mark among UK tiatr lovers!

June 6th 2009, witnessed a new era for the Konkani Stage in UK under the auspices of Konkani Dramatic Association, UK.

Romald(Michael)and Betty (Mary), the Goan couple settled in UK try to enlighten their only daughter Merlyn (Meryln) against her blind pursuit of aping the English lifestyle.

Felcy gave a stellar performance as Sarah Floyd’s(Junior Nelson) wife who strives to bring back the lost glory after the demise of her mother-in-law.

Melodious Music : Another main reason for the great response that Him Tujim Pavlam was given can be attributed to the man in the foreground- James Vaz, the Band Leader. Adding to this euphoria was the Drum Solo by ( Polly ) which was the brain child of the band leader himself.
