'Konkanising’ Place Names

'Konkanising’ Place Names

Varde Valaulikar, the Shakespeare of Konkani literature who wrote 22 books between 1919 and 1968, including 11 translations of Shakespearean plays and the Bhagwat Gita, proclaimed that Purn-Swaraj would not be complete without the full emancipation of the Konkani language.

Forty-eight long years have rolled by since Liberation. Many of us abroad are showing signs of a new Konkani consciousness, by speaking Konkani in Goan conferences and social gatherings. Now the time has come to ‘Konkanise’ the names of our villages etc.

Just as the state has changed the name ‘Ilhas’ to ‘Tissuadi’, and ‘Panjim’ to ‘Panaji’, we call upon the various Konkani academies and associations to join hands, and plead for the official changes of place names, to say ‘Fonddem’, ‘Diuchele’, ‘Sallgoam’, ‘Murgoam’, ‘Saxtti’, ‘Moddgoam’, ‘Kunkolle’, and so on.

KONKANI MUSIC
Emiliano sings

EMILIANO da Cruz, the Goan violinist of repute, has entertained lovers of good music of several countries over the years. Having groomed himself for a musical career, he eventually led his own band, which regaled guest of affluent hotels. Besides playing the instruments he has composed music, which possesses a classical touch. The string effect, with which he embelishes his compositions, few can equal. That's when he plays any instrument. But with his latest Konkani cassette, one can hear the master's vocals too.

In his new audio album "Kuwaitkar Novro", Emiliano accompanies Sumita in "Mummy & Daddy" and Lorna in melancholic "Tuka", and even goes solo in romantic "Maria", which has been based on his own lyrics. For a much needed change, we find a rare, rich, vibrant voice singing in Konkani. The voice seems to breath emotions into the lyrics, some of which he has composed. Santosh Naik has penned most of the other lyrics.

We also find that Lorna, takes a break and attempt a diversion. Besides rendering the theme song "Kuwaitkar Novro", Lorna is also heard in "Are Raja Mhojea Moga" and "Jiv Zata Hum Hum" with Sylvester. Sylvester also does justice to Emiliano's experimentation in "Jai, Jai Bharat" along with the Tender Voices (Tabitha, Zubin, Nejba, Karishma, Roselle, Luis and Mavita), then teams up with Lulu in another enchanting number called "Sobit Goa". But it's in "Jiv Zata Hum Hum", sung with Lorna, that he really shines. Anthony San sings "Happy New Year" (lyrics by fermeena Khaunte).

Drawing on his vast experience of performing at Mumbai's recording studios, under exacting directors, and assisting them often to structure sections, Emiliano has mastered the trick to mix and match words and moods into a charming harmony. The tune sounds familiar initially but suddenly does a pleasant detour.

Likewise, Emiliano also dismounts the established traditional line in lyrics too in "Kuwaitkar Novro". In Konkani, the Indian style and the westernized one generally go their separate ways. Emiliano, however, attempts some sort of a welcome narrowing of the gap between the otherwise parallel lines. Quite experimental and evolutionary music does he. When one listens to it attentively, the fresh trend which Emiliano has brought into Konkani music, appears worthy of applause.

The string maestro has to perfect the new trend, which he has ushered into Konkani music, by producing more such fine music to keep up the tempo. So far there is no CD of "Kuwaitkar Novro", which in the audio cassette format sells at Rs.70.

Goa legislators' conduct as "tiatrist" (a local form of drama).

Goa assembly warns press over comment on legislators' conduct
PTI / Tuesday, August 04th, 2009 AT 3:08 PM / (Gomantak Times)

PANAJI: Speaker of Goa legislative assembly, Pratapsingh Rane today rebuked the press for commenting on conduct of legislators during the ongoing monsoon session.

Senior Congress leader and former state law minister Dayanand Narvekar pointed out that a coloumn published in a local daily termed the legislators' conduct as "tiatrist" (a local form of drama).

Making a mention during zero hour, Narvekar also demanded that the writer should be summoned in the house and punished as such act amounts to curtailing the freedom of legislators and making mockery of the system.

Intervening the debate, the Speaker warned the press to print anything which is not within the framework of rules and regulations.

"The members (of house) has total freedom to express their thoughts. The newspaper owes an apology or otherwise I need to refer the matter to committee of privileges," Rane said.

He said that the punishment for it can be the imprisonment that can be given without even referring to the privileges committee as house is in session.

The Tiatrists too are disgusted to be compared with MLAs - and we can vouch this statement for all concerned. All Tiatrists do need to protest too, if the MLAs and Assembly Members are also taking the word "Tiatrist" as derogatory...... Isn't it right, Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, Hon. President, Tiatr Academy of Goa?
And what's the warning about......? For whom? For the Goan press? ].

Politicians and Martyrs

While politicians engage in corruption and wrongdoing, our brave youth die defending the country, points out SAMIR KELEKAR

Goan politicians surely have very thick skins. For instance, this Assembly session has almost been like a comedy show, and one would have laughed heartily if not for the tragic state of Goa. Imagine the master of it all, Dayanand Narvekar, calling the government corrupt! Here was the guru of it all, having taught the shishyas how to make hay while the sun shines, now crying foul when the shishyas have learnt the technique better than him. In fact, any guru would have happily retired seeing such a great following, but not our politicians. One thing about our politicians is that they will never retire. The addiction of power is too much. It was even more funny to see the Calangute MLA calling his own party’s government a government of pimps and peddlers. Of course, give a ministerial berth to both the Calangute MLA and Narvekar, let them get a piece of the pie, and they will not utter a word against the government.

Under the aegis of the Konkan Marathi Parishad, the state is gearing up to host a three-day all-India Marathi Sammelan from 15 to 17 January, 2010 at the Dayanand Bandodkar grounds, Panjim.
Incidentally, the Sammelan is being held against the backdrop of the birth centenary of Goa's first revolutionary chief minister Dayanand (Bhausaheb) Bandodkar and Goan Marathi poet par excellence B.B. Borkar.
With an aim to take this task to its logical conclusion, a meet was organised in Panjim to undertake spade work and discuss the nitty-gritty of a Sammelan of this magnitude.

Meet Seby D’Souza – one of the heroes of NIRMONN and hero of Kortubancho Sonvsar

Meet Seby D’Souza – one of the heroes of NIRMONN and hero of Kortubancho Sonvsar
July 31 was quite a busy day for me. In the evening we bid adieu to our dearest colleague and scholar, Dr. Olivinho Gomes at Taleigao. Earlier, in the morning, one of our Anjunkarn, Mrs. Emilia Fernandes, first cousin of Mrs. Martha Aguiar (late M. Boyer’s wife) was interned in Anjuna parish.

The moment I got the news that Emilia had passed away, I remembered her brother, Seby, who lives in Mumbai. I was pleasantly surprised to see him at his sister’s funeral.
I met with him today after around forty years and we both recalled the good old times. Before I begin to write on Seby, let me give readers a brief about him:

Seby’s full name is: Sebastiao Santos George Lorensinho D’Souza. He was colloquially known to his schoolmates as Bosteão. He hails from Kuddchem Bhatt, Anjuna. He is the son of late Xavier Francis D’Souza, the eldest brother of Apolnario D’Souza (M. Boyer’s father-in-law – Martha’s father.)

Seby is the grandson of Pasku (Pascoal) Simão, once upon a time a famous man in Anjuna, who owned a “bongsai” (saw mill) in Kuddchem Bhatt. He employed many workers in his sawmill. In those days, anyone who had workers working for him was categorized as an “astig munis” (well-to-do person.) Pasku Simão was a very good carpenter.

Seby studied in St. Joseph High School in Arpora – a school for which his grandfather had rendered his services as a carpenter when it was built.

He relocated to Bombay in 1957. He fondly remembers the troubles he underwent to go to Bombay by crossing the Nai Bhag River and how his cousin, Mariano, got caught by British soldiers while crossing the river and was jailed in Aronda.

He began his mechanical career in 1958 with Pereira & Sons. In 1968, he joined the National Garage Private Limited in the capacity of a Supervisor. Finally, he established his own business ‘Messrs. SEBSON AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERS’ in Juhu in 1976.

Seby grew up in the midst of seasoned tiatrists like C. Alvares, Robin Vaz, Prem Kumar, Francis de Parra, M. Boyer, Alfred Rose, etc. Obviously, he was inspired and influenced by them.

He was very much interested in tiatros so much so he wrote and directed his first tiatro “MAINCHI DEKH” when he was around 17 years old. He has written and directed about a dozen tiatros. Some of his famous tiatros were:

SOMDIRANT
MHOJEM NOXIB
RUPKAR
BHOTTO (with Mohanna.)

He recalls in those days there was no much prospect for a tiatro, as it would be shown only once in P.T. (Prince’s Theatre) Bangwaddi. Rarely the same tiatro was shown in other parts of Bombay.

He was a “partist” (played roles) but he also liked to sing, especially duets. He has acted with all professional tiatrists; he was a regular in M. Boyer’s tiatros.

In 1965, Seby got a chance to act in Konkani film ‘Nirmonn’. In this film, he is Claudia’s (Antonette’s) boyfriend. As we all know, it was the best Konkani film ever. Seby carved a niche for himself in this movie and became immortal in everyone’s heart, especially in the hearts of girls!

Seby was very handsome and he still looks a dashing hero. Whenever Bomboikar tiatrists’ group came to Goa and Seby visited Anjuna, we would admire his handsomeness and keep looking at him for as long as we could at the same time dreaming of becoming a hero like him one day. After watching Nirmonn, we hoped he would act in many more Konkani movies.

Our wishes were partly fulfilled when two years later (1967) he played the main role beside Fatima in Albert Britton’s film “Kortubancho Sonvsar”, a ‘Brittona Films’ production.

Seby was chosen for another Konkani film (Mangalorean) but he opted out because their offer was very low. It was a lead role which required a rich wardrobe. Seby told them he would agree to their offer on condition that they provided him with the wardrobe, but they did not agree.

Around 1970, Seby changed from actor-writer-director to a ‘Tiatro Contractor.’ He became one of the main tiatro contractors in Bombay as well as Goa. He also took tiatros to New Delhi. He proudly tells me that he was the one who brought Chris Perry’s show “Novro Mhozo Devchar” to Goa. I think it was Lorna’s maiden debut in that tiatro.

Seby recalls how difficult it was to hire a car in Goa for advertisement purposes - keep in mind there were very few cars in Goa in the 1960s and 1970s.

“None would give us a car on hire for a few hours; not even for half a day; we had to hire a car for a full day. Moreover, it was a problem to bring a car from Margao, Salcete to Mapusa, Bardez. Therefore, I would sometimes bring a car from my garage in Bombay and use it in Goa as per our needs.”

Seby retired from his private business and lives with his family – wife Mary, son Frank and daughter Nisha in Juhu-Koliwadda, Catholic Society, Santa Cruz, Mumbai. Unfortunately, none of his children have followed their father’s footsteps.

However, Seby’s nephew (late Emilia’s son), Henry Fernandes, who recently built a beautiful house at Sorantto, Anjuna, is a very good actor and singer. He is actively involved in tiatros in Doha-Qatar. He has acted with many professional tiatrists like Prince Jacob, late Bab Peter, Sucurrine, late Luis Dias (late Aristide’s son,) etc.

It is people like Seby who we owe our gratitude to for working hard to spread and promote the Konkani language through tiatros.

We, Anjunkars, are proud of you Seby! We wish you many more successful years and all the best to your family.
