About Simon Gonsalves:
Little did anyone know that a simple lad born a few decades ago in Panchwadi
would rise to be an indomitable star of the Konkani stage. An actor of
exceptional talent, winner of several awards for acting, a good singer,
composer and producer of Konkani audio albums, a playwright who has penned
noteworthy scripts and directed many tiatros, Simon Gonsalves has entered the
chronicles of tiatr history in Goa and Kuwait.

In a candid chat with us, Simon, a multi-talented artiste talked about his
voyage in the drama foyer in an incredibly short span of time.

Simon's immense talent and stage capabilities were first noticed by his
village folks when he went up the stage to participate in a Kunnbi dance for a
school gathering. People, amazed at his poise and graceful stage presence,
prompted him to take up acting in tiatros.

Landing with his first character role of a police inspector in a village
tiatro, and later Bab Agnel D'Costa's "Xapai" Simon went on excelling in every
performance that followed on the stage and the Carnaval khells in which he had
become a name to reckon with.

With explosives of hidden talents, Simon wanted to go cross milestones with
his blazing talent. Simon discovered his multi-faceted acumen when he
excelled in his directorial debut venture in 3 consequent tiatros in his
village, two of which were written by Bab Santan de Xelvon and other by
Reginald de Panchwadi.
A meticulous eccentric perfectionist that he is, Simon personally painted the
boards, (as is the practice even now, where every village advertises on a
piece of painted wood/ Formica board giving details of the drama - this board
is usually kept at the tinttos/main area of activity of the village).

The appreciation and fame poured in from every angle except his family. Simon
longed for his family's support to further his acting career. His family had
cleared their stand with him, they were dead against the tiatr and tiatr
world. But Simon had a mission; he had to carry the flaming torch of Konkani
tiatro. He determined to change their minds with his appreciable work.

A few years later, Simon moved to Kuwait for his livelihood after a fellow
villager, Peter D'Souza, helped him to get a visa to Kuwait. With a heavy
heart, sitting aboard the flight from Goa to Kuwait, Simon realized that he
will miss his life-long passion in Kuwait. With a few tiatros being staged in
Kuwait, Simon saw minimal chances of himself working on the stage.

But God had other plans for him. Jeff de Assolna who knew his abilities and
casted him in his tiatr "Bhik" in Kuwait. Thereafter Bab Rafael de Majorda
cast him in his maiden venture "ALIZA" where Simon ignited the stage with his
acting finesse. His role as an errant husband going astray teamed with Jane,
another equally talented artiste of Kuwait and Betty Naz a very prominent
actress of Konkani films and stage is still remembered by the tiatr audiences.
With a perfect dialogue delivery matched with precise stage angles and
presence left audience desiring for more of this newly developed stage
persona. Later his acting career got a boost with his portrayal of negative
character role in Mario de Majorda's tiatr "Anvddo" staged in December 2000.

Not satisfied, Simon had his sights focussed on greater heights. He opted to
test his directorial capabilities in Kuwait by participating in the one-act
play competition organized by United Club of Utorda. He was pleasantly
surprised to bag many awards for his one-act play "DEVACHO GHUTT DEV ZANAM".
And indeed, he had outshone as an artiste, director and more importantly
playwright of exceptional capabilities.

Encouraged by this feat, Simon staged his first full-fledged Konkani
tiatr, "TUJEA KALLZAK VINCHAR" in 2002 with artistes from Goa and Kuwait.
Thereafter, he and his brother, Felix, co-directed another one-act
play "Resped Diat" and bagged the second place which again reinforced Simon's
position as a production unit of high calibre. Simon entertained Kuwait Goans
recently with his novel Konkani tiatr " TUZO GHAUM, MOJEM NANV" to be staged
on November 19, 2004. Simon has a very promising character role in this drama.
A devout humble man, Simon thanks God in the first place for all his
achievements. He is now a content man enjoying the full support of his family
who, appreciate his tireless tryst to carry on his passion for acting despite
the pressures. He is indebted to few people who have supported him in the
tiatr world but more importantly the audiences who have stood by him
throughout his acting, singing and directorial career in Kuwait.

With final remarks, Simon said "God has blessed us with a talent for acting.
We should work continuously to preserve and promote this art in ourselves and
others without creating obstacles for the progress of the Konkani Stage".

RONGANT RONGLO MI
(Imersed Myself In Colour)

- Cursino R. Pinho

The capital of Bardez taluka, before the advent of Portuguese arrival, is the town of Mapusa is and still remains such. The sons and daughters from Mapusa has been shining examples and famous in different walks of life. Shrirang Pandurang Narvekar, a very down-to-earth simpleton, turned to be a bright star, which nobody had imagined him to be. Today Shrirang is not only known in the whole of the Gomantak region but even outside Goa he is a prominent artiste, director and producer/stage manager for Marathi nataks (plays) as well as a contractor for staging traditional Tiatrs and his generosity is not exergerated . Always with a smile on his face, he is always and remains a kind hearted Shrirang whom is well respected.
On March 29, 2009, the Gomant Kolakar Songh (Federation of Goan Marathi Artistes) on their 50th anniversary released Shrirang’s Marathi book “Rongant Ronglo Mi” (Immersed Myself in Colours) at the Vaishya Auditorium, Mapusa, to the thunderous applause of a large gathering. Amongst the dignitaries included Adv. Ramakant Khalap, Padmashri Pandit Samprosad Sawkar, Padmashri Suresh Amonkar, Sudhabai Amonkar, Former Speaker Surendra Sirsat and other guests attended the ceremony. Each and every spoke eloquently on Shrirang’s life time association and interest in theatrical arts. Their undisputed remark on his personal qualities and his generosity. Adv. Khalap even suggested that an award like the padmashri as “Rongshri” can be bestowed on him.
On the occasion of his book “Rongant Ronglo Mi” another unique ceremony of honouring his colleagues and fellow artistes of his time, some with whom he has been associated for several of his youthful days. About fifty artistes were honoured with a shawl, garland and a memento to each and amongst these were some retirees in their prime age. Whilst naming them and their qualities, Shrirang’s happiness knew no bound and it was all written over his expressions. I have not come across generous attitude at any time. Shrirang and his family has been proud to bestow their affection towards those whom they honoured and their happiness could be observed by all.
Being Hindu by religion, Shrirang Narvekar by his simplicity considers each and every one as a friend. He assists anyone who approaches him in their time of need without any religious bias. While he was elected as a councilor of the Mapusa Municipality Council, his work and dedication for the community’s interest has been well proven. Now that he is now longer the councilor, still his advice on the wellbeing of his community. As a member of the Mapusa Azilo Hospital’s Visiting Committee, he eagerly enquires and tends to the needs of the patients. He is involved in the liquour business but is a teetotoller to the core.
My association with Shrirang Narvekar dates back to 1968 when Kala Akademi organized the Arts Forum. This forum was held at the New Goa High School. Mr. Prabhakar Gupte of Pune was the main speaker at this forum. About forty to forty-five persons attended, among them 5-6 women. Shrirang being a Mhapxekar stood tall among them. It was here that our friendship commenced. From then on, we met frequently and kept our relationship…..

Being a supporter of the Mapusa Merchant Crib, Shrirang had all the youth involved in organizing a Tiatr near the main square around the Crib which he supported cannot be forgotten. To awake the sleepy Congress Party out of its slumber in Goa, Shrirang Narvekar organized a huge meeting at the famous Narvekar Mattou (tent) in Mapusa. It was here that he put forth the name of Sham Sundor Nevgy to be Mapusa’s MLA at the next election and he did succeeded. To hear Shrirang speak at the podium gallantly everyone in the audience gave him a listening ear.
For his book release he personally invited me and I did make it a point to attend without fail.
The late Al Jerry Braganza produced the Konkani film "Sukhachem Sopon" wherein Shrirang enacted the role of a Hindu neighbor. A mere mention of it and Shrirang happily states that he is a cinema actor. AI Jerry Braganza and Shrirang Narvekar were both from Mapusa and from the same ward, Onsabhat. It might be true that this was the reason why Al Jerry Braganza chosed Shrirang for the film as the ‘neighbour’.
In a few days, Shrirang will visit Israel. After visiting Jesus’ birthplace, he intends to write a book. I wish him all the best in this endeavour.
Another thing to confirm about Shrirang belief in all religions and humanity. When the Janata Party came to power with Mr. Morarji Dessai as its prime minister, the ‘Freedom of Religion Bill’ was tabled. It was related to the ban on religious conversion wherein one could not be forcefully converted to another relation and this was to be passed as an Act in the Parliament. The Chotholic Church and other religions tabled pertinent questions. In Goa also this bill was rejected and several rallies and gatherings were held. At that time, although Srirang being a Hindu did strongly voiced his objections at the rally in Mapusa which I still remember.
In his book “Rongant Ronglo Mi” his involvement and love for the theatrical stage and arts and how he has immersed himself in its colour is well documented by Shrirang. His sweet and sour memories of it are expressed in his writings. To the readers, he has illustrated an historical account of Goa’s Nataks and how he has illuminated himself as an artiste. After reading this book, how truly Shrirang has immersed himself colourfuly will be exposed.

Cruz Coutinho, the Best Trumpeters of Today

Cruz Coutinho, the Best Trumpeters of Today

Cruz Coutinho from Sanvordem, son of Joao and Rozada Coutinho, is one of the best trumpeters today. There is a dearth of musicians playing the blowing instruments. Fortunately, Cruz loves to play the trumpet and saxaphone and does a wonderful job of it.

His father was the choirmaster at the Church in Curchorem and would also arrange the music for konkani dramas. The son picked up music from the father and also taught himself to improvise and reach a high standard of playing. He honed his talent by constant practice and now holds his listeners in awe, whenever he plays the saxophone or the trumpet.

Way back in 1977, the Centre Social Anjo Custodio organised a programme of song, dance and music. Cruz got an opportunity to perform and when he played Spanish Eyes on the trumpet, received a thunderous applause from the audience. He was overwhelmed and in his own words, My Soul Rejoiced. The confidence rose and soon he played for dance bands and carnival folk plays.

At this time some friends suggested that he should try and play the saxophone. Cruz did and soon the listeners began comparing him to Pete Tex, Harry James, Eddie Calvert and our own, Chris Perry. But Cruz feels, he has a long way to go to reach the standard of these international musicians.

Having played with konkani tiatr directors like C. D'Silva, Roseferns, Lino Fernandes and Jacob (for nearly 13 years), he now leads the band for Menino de Bandar providing pleasant music that is beautifully arranged. Before the commencement of a show, he does a solo on the trumpet, dressed in a colourful costume, mingling with the audience.

His own composition Konkre Kom was loved by the audience. He treasures the words of appreciation from Fr. Marian Goes Proenca, who praised him no end, on his performance at the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Besides music, Cruz writes short stories and poetry. He has penned skits and received prizes for scripts singing and acting He has been a member of the Goan cultural troupes and has performed at Kulu Manali, Chandigarh, Delhi, Simla, Kerala and various other places under the Inter State Cultural Exchange Programme, conducted by the Director of Art & Culture, Goa.

Cruz works for the Department of Education. His wife Maria, is a government servant who helps him with all support, inspite of her busy schedule. His daughter, Melaney is qualified in MSc with BEd while Veronica is a 1st year LLB student taking active part in cultural activities. The son, Macson is into Automobile Engineering. Cruz is thankful to God for the blessings he has received and for the gift of playing music. He is grateful to the audience who have given him the encouragement and support .

Music inspires the soul and gives immense happiness. He advises youngsters to learn music at an early age because the bliss one gets from learning music will even help their studies.

All the best to you Cruz. We hope you play for many more years.

Superlative concert - Goa State Symphony Orchestra

http://www.goa-world.com/goa/tiatr&tiatrist/p98_99.htm
Superlative concert

Prof Pheroze Mistry must be warmly congratulated for the excellent performance by Goa State Symphony Orchestra at Kala Academy’s D M Auditorium on July 29. The ensemble should have been called String Section of the Goa State Symphony Orchestra, which, as we understand, is under the baton of Prof Mistry.
The soloists in both the concerts did full justice to their respective parts. The orchestra was accompanied with verve and exuberance. The sound overall was rich, clear and expressive. In Vivaldi’s concerto, Prof Mistry both played the second violin and conducted the orchestra, which points to his concentration of mind combined with his artistic ability. Ashley Rego, who was soloist in the two concerts, was equally expressive and forceful in the solo passages of Albinoni’s Adagio in G.
Kala Academy must also be congratulated for this achievement. We can hope that in the near future we will have a symphony orchestra (with the winds added to the strings along with percussion).

Reliving Konkani's greatest hits
TNN 10 August 2009,

PANAJI: Goans can now sing along with their preferred singers as all time Konkani favourites like Cathrina', Claudia', Bandra Festak', and other hit
songs of the yesteryears have been put together in one book.

Original hits of the last 50 years are available, in Konkani, besides some popular Portuguese and Swahili songs too, have been compiled by non resident Goans from Toronto, Canada, Francis Rodrigues. Unavailable music of the likes of Chris Perry, Frank Fernand, M Boyer, Alfred Rose and others is now available - transcribed note-for-note.

The songs include Adeus Korchea Vellar', Lisboa', Kampala', Sacrament Zoddlo', Mollbailo Dou', Malaika,' Maria Isabel,' Encosta Tua Cabecinha', Cecilia', Mogacho Divo', Proud to be a Goan', and others.

Besides the lyrics, the compiler has provided the chords for the songs. Not only have these been annotated to the music, but intricate chord-diagrams have been supplied for each song, making it easy for the musician.

According to Rodrigues, himself a musician and a lawyer by profession, the songs can now also be accompanied by harmonic instruments without sheet-music like the piano, accordion, keyboard and guitar. For bands and musical groups worldwide, separate music in tablature form for the guitar have been included.

Besides maintaining the originality and authenticity of the lyrics, there are cross-references from myriad sources, conveying the composer's intentions and the background of each composition.

"Each song has not only been accurately translated, but the translations have been set to verse/rhymed. Not only can the songs be poetically resung in English, but can bring the original music to the doorsteps of the world," says Rodrigues.

The book also includes programme notes, original and detailed historical liner-notes and anecdotes. "It has been painstakingly cross-checked and researched from numerous sources," said Rodrigues.

Other than the book, which can come handy to any music lover, a free DVD is a priceless bonus. "All the songs have been filmed and performed by Canadian jazz pianist Victor Martins. So that can help anyone to observe closely how to perform the music."

Greatest Konkani Song Hits (Vol I)' was released on Sunday by NRI commissioner Eduardo Faleiro, who lauded the efforts put in by Rodrigues for the book, which he said will help Konkani reach every nook and corner of the world.

Konkani writer Tomazinho Cardozo said the book will boost the language across the globe and it will help keep alive traditional Konkani culture among Goans scattered worldwide. The book is being released worldwide for World Goa Day on 20 August.

Konkani VCD "DUKHAM" by Querobina Carvalho

Comedy Queen Querobina Carvalho - Quero to friends - launched her first
songs and jokes Video CD entitled 'Dukham' (Tears) at the Goa Day event on
9th November 2007 in Kuwait.

Querobina has transcended Goa's stereotype stage style to become one of the
finest actresses of this generation against all odds. She is undoubtedly a
superstar and on a pedestal equal to legendary celebrities of the stage.
Querobina is perhaps the only actress who can do comedy as well as tragedy
roles and at the highest standard at that, and sing with a voice that can
melt stone hearts.

The Video CD produced by Music House (Mapusa) and music composed by famed
Goan musician Norman Cardozo, consists of a selection of songs and jokes.

Querobina has the distinction of winning 3 straight Kala Academy awards as
the Best Singer of Goa from 1973 to 1975. Acclaimed as one of Goa's popular
comedienne and an actress for enacting tragedy roles, Querobina has
tirelessly served Konkani stage even after landing in Kuwait. The
multi-talented star recently featured in the first Konkani E-Cinema 'BLACK
Nhesop Atanchem Fashion' produced and directed by T-Bush.

Querobina is a singer with an eloquent voice and has to her credit several
songs in Konkani CDs, video films and audio albums. She has sung in
approximately 39 audios and features in 8 videos. Her first Album 'Dhinvas'
was a runaway hit. Not too long ago, Querobina presented her first Konkani
album "Tragedy Queen" dedicated to her favourite stage actress Ophelia
Cabral.

Querobina's first step on the stage was at the age of 9 years where she sang
her first solo at St. Aloysius High School. Querobina's rise to fame began
with her 'first break' on the professional stage in A.M. Pacheco's drama
'Mr. Romeo' and 'Odruxtt' in 1977. Querobina labored long in the field of
different roles for Patrick Dourado's 'Soth' and the second ever ladies show
on Konkani stage 'Oxem Ghoddtta' before her acting in Goa's mega hit dramas
showed the extent of her brillance and talents. She soon went on to act in
A.M.Pacheco's 'Don Roste', 'Vis Vorsam Adim' and Nelson
(Nelson-Conception-Anthony) Alphonso's 'Asro.' In 1978 she joined Patrick
Dourado's troupe that brought her recognition as a professional artiste and
also the title 'Comedy Queen Querobina' for his drama 'Ostori'.

The greatness of her acting came forth again in performances of Patrick's
tragedy hit 'Lok Sangtolo', and M. Boyer's 'Mog Kazar Divorce'. Soon she was
pulled in Bombay by late Bab Peter to act in an all Bombay professional
group in 'Guneaum Mhozo Nhuim'. Later, she performed mostly comedy roles in
Prince Jacob's productions. Die-hard tiatro fans have followed her career
closely, watching her metamorphose into one of the State's most recognized
faces on the Konkani stage. Her numerous other acting credits include
Patrick Dourado's superhits such as "Oxem Ghoddtta", "Ghatki Bhoinn",
"Bhavacho Cheddo", "Familik Vollkona", "Lok Sangtolo", "Tem Mhojem Soirem",
"Dev Borem Korum", "Tin Fogotteache Marann", "Varem", "Noketr", "Patok",
etc; C. D'Silva and Patrick Dourado's joint venture 'Mannkam Motiam', 'Mog',
etc.

Querobina featured in approximately 27 different dramas of Patrick Dourado
and later acted in shows of Conny M. D'Silva, Vitorino Pereira, Master Vaz,
legendary late Rosario Rodrigues, Menino de Bandar, etc. Prominent hits
that she acted are late Bab Peter's 'Mijas', 'Guneanv Mhozo Nhoim', 'Tuka
Kiteak Poddlam'; Robin Vaz's 'Biatin', 'Chamcha'; late C.Alvares' 'Xezari
Kombo' ; late Jacinto Vaz's drama 'Sukh ani Dukh'; Wilmix's 'Sonvsar ani
Sorg'; Roseferns' 'Tuttlele Dhaage'; and Prince Jacob's superhits 'Pavnnek',
'Ponvot', 'Pordexi', 'Poltodd', 'Pangddo', 'Pergao', 'Poixe-Poixe', etc.

Querobina has also sung and rendered her voice in 56 folk plays on All India
Radio (AIR) - Goa which were a major source of entertainment for public
before the advent of television in Goa in the wake of the 1982 ASAID. As a
comedienne Querobina has acted alongside famous artistes of Konkani stage
that include Comedian Dias, Comedienne Platilda, Comedian Philip, Comedian
Domnic, Augustine, Sherly, Sally, Comedian Jesus, Luis Bachchan, Nelson,
Ben, Ambe, X. Almeida, M. Boyer, Jacinto Vaz, Titta Pritto, Tony Martins,
Paul Romy, Hortencio, late Luis Dias, etc. She was a darling of the crowd in
Prince Jacob's shows alongside Jacob and Humbert.

Born to Andrew Carvalho and Arcangela Fernandes and coming from the
beautiful coastal village Majorda, Querobina grew up with her younger
brother Anthony. It was in celebrated director M.Boyer's drama 'Mog Kazar
Divorce' that she first toured the Middle East and made the trip again for
another 5 times in Prince Jacob's shows. Recalling her overseas tours
Querobina underlines "In 1989, I performed in London for Prince Jacob's
'Painem' and 'Pergao'; my first trip to Kuwait was in Mario de Majorda's
"Sambau" drama staged in 1994 at Keifan Hall." The much in demand actress
also toured Dubai and Bahrain for Jose Rod's "Mauli" and for Comedian Philip's
drama 'Hem Kazar Koslem?', and also traveled to Qatar, Bahrain from Kuwait
to act in dramas on several occasions. Querobina's 'residency' in Kuwait
has been hailed in the media by many Goans as a gift to Kuwait Konkani
lovers but the void created by her absence in Goa is missed by thousands.
Since her arrival in Kuwait in 1995 she has acted in various dramas directed
by Jose Rod, Rosary Ferns, Comedian Philip, Mario de Majorda, etc. Most
recently, she has acted for the shows directed by Salu Faleiro, Simon
Gonsalves, Francis de Tuem, etc. Indisputably, a multifaceted actress like
Querobina would have been hailed as a "top star" had she been acting in any
other language dramas. The artiste has been felicitated in Kuwait by
Konkani Heritage Kuwait (2000) and United Club of Utorda (2007) and in
Bahrain at the staging of Anthony Luis Fernandes' show. After a gap of 22
years, she had performed in July 2007 in Goa for Laurente Pereira's 'Hea
Gharachim Dharam Bondh' tiatr to a thunderous ovation.

"The audience has accepted and appreciated me as an actress. I am sure the
latest video of songs and jokes will be a joy of tears for the Konkani
speaking masses", stated Querobina.
