Yet again ‘Kingfisher Voice of Goa 2009’ brought into focus the abundant talent available in Goa. While Tavia Machado from Siolim emerged the judges’ choice for the coveted title in the English round, P S Roy came up trumps at the Indian Language round.
The winners were awarded a bounty in prizes. The finals was also given the touch of glamour with performances by India’s well know boy band, ‘A Band of Boys’ at the Indian Language round on Saturday while Lucky Ali enthralled the audience at the finals of the English round on Sunday. ‘A Band of Boys’ interacted with the audience and got them to participate in their performance. Lucky Ali drew an instant round of applause as the crowd welcomed him on stage. He performed some of his hit numbers and had everyone in good spirits.
The bands ‘Symphony’ entertained on Saturday while ‘Pure Magic’ gave their best to the Sunday crowd at the Go-A Kart Track, Nuvem. The Russian dancers also added to the glamour on the occasion. The event brought in the carnival mood and enjoyment reigned supreme. The judges for the Indian Language round were Saish Deshpande, Pravin Naik and Sachin Chatte. The English round was judged by Roque Lazarus, Mukesh Ghantwal and Seby Fernandes.

Newcomers Serula Art and Culture Academy, which comprises of the villages of Pomburpa, Penha de Franca, Socorro and Salvador do Mundo will stage its much acclaimed tiatr “Kallokhi Uzvadd” at Hanuman theatre, Mapusa at 7pm. The tickets are only Rs.30 per show or Rs.100 pass for all four shows and are available at the counter.
The Tiatr Academy of Goa in its bid to promote tiatr in bardez will stage four award winning tiatrs from the 35th All Goa Tiatr competition held at the Kala Academy recently. On the 10th “Asro zai”, 11th “Kallokhi Uzvadd”, 12th “Rinn” and 13th “Eksiddent” will be held at 7pm.
It’s the first time in many years that tiatrs will be held at 7pm instead of its usual mapusa time of 3:30pm. Says Mr. Mario Fernandes Spokesman for Serula arts and culture academy, “We are delighted and pleased that the tiatr academy of goa has chosen Mapusa to be the venue for this tiatr festival. Presently tiatr lovers from bardez have to travel to Panjim or Margao to watch quality tiatr which means
travelling a lot of distance. Our tiatr Kallokhi Uzvadd has given us an opportunity to promote young talent.
“The teen stars of the academy made us all proud by winning three first prizes. Little dynamite Shenaya Pereira won the best child artist and a merit certificate for singing as she did a brilliant job by keeping the entire audience entertained with her charm, also Wonder Boy Cameron Fernandes who one the first prize in singing with his melodious voice and style and 17 year old British born Ashley Fernandes and his band were declared the first prize as the “Best Band” at the competition. The seven man band comprising of Francis Azavedo on Trumpet, Dominic de Souza on Bass,
Ashley Fernandes on keyboards, Sammy Braganza on trombone, Tony Fernandes on rhythm guitar and Roy Menezes on saxophone.
We are particularly pleased that the band has won the first prize as the young musicians practised hard and the result bodes well for the future”.
The academy are also going to participate in the forthcoming All Goa Marathi Natak Competition to be held at the Kala Academy in January 2010 and many of our actors and musicians will be part of the competition.

Kuwait Goan Stars to perform at Qatar

Kuwait November 8, 2009: Kuwait's young music maestro Shahu Almeida will provide live music at the annual mega Konkani musical show at Doha Qatar organized by the Goan Cultural Group.
The unique style musical to be held at Gulf Cinema, Doha, will present celebrated singers from Goa such as Xavier Gomes, Francis de Tuvem, Marcus Vaz, Lawry Travasso, Mario Menezes, Rosy Alvares, etc. Topmost comedians of the Konkani stage Ben Evangelisto, Sally and Joanna are also invited to add spice to the night.
The highlight of the show is going to be a 'creative' opening chorus, according to the organizers Mr. Maurice Pereira and Paul Fernandes of the Goan Cultural Group.
Kuwait's trio singers Mario de Majorda, Cajetan de Sanvordem and Michael D'Silva will add color to the evening with their memorable hits.
Cajetan Pereira - a flamboyant singer
Kala Academy Award winner for Best Actor and Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Best Singer Award winner Cajetan Pereira is popularly known as Cajetan de Sanvordem.
Born to Jose Salvador and Maria Magdalena Pereira at Sanvordem-Goa, Cajetan first came into spotlight when he was just 8 years of age whilst singing in school and village dramas.
Besides acting and singing Cajetan is a public figure in social activities. Time and again, he has been elected to several Indian organizations. He is the President of United Friends Club – a football association and the Ex-President of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha (KGTS). He is also the President of Guardian Angel Club of Sanvordem (Kuwait), Head of Cultural Cell of Goan Welfare Society (GWS) since inception, and an active member of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF).
Apart from being a flamboyant actor, Cajetan is also a versatile compere. His voice, diction, flair and linguistic abilities, especially with his mother-tongue Konkani makes his presence felt vibrantly at Goan cultural programs and social gatherings. He is also good in penning slogans in Konkani. Cajetan's cursive 'handwriting' skill should be seen to be believed and his sense of humor heard to understand the simplicity of life.
Stage great Mario de Majorda
Mario Fernandes, popularly known as Mario de Majorda is one of the established stalwarts of Konkani Stage.
Mario started as a singer at a young age of 13 in 'Somdir ani Lharam' of Felly Lucas and later sang in Jeoffrey de Majorda's 'To Monis Konn'.
Born to Antonette Severina Fernandes and John Fernandes, Mario comes from the beautiful coastal village of Calata-Majorda, Goa. He came to Kuwait in 1983 and has been active ever since on stage and other activities. Initially, Mario was able to pursue his great enthusiasm for acting by helping out in the Holy Family Cathedral's Parents Day programs wherein he used to write, direct, act, compose and also sing songs. He is currently the In-charge of the choir. His presence and works in Kuwait-Goa Tiatristhanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) and Goan Welfare Society (GWS) are hugely noticeable among the Indian community.
Michael D'Silva – one of Kuwait's most popular singer
Michael D'Silva has been performing on stage in Kuwait since 1994. Known for his poetical composing, Michael first sang in Mario de Majorda's drama 'Sambau'.
Maestro Shahu - A shining star across the shores
Amongst the contemporary big names of musicians, the name of Francis Almeida, popularly known as Shahu shines amongst the stellar bracket of Goa's top-notch musicians with his indispensable contribution towards the art.Shahu may be recognized more in the genre of dramas. But behind his simplicity, is the unmistakable halo of his talent as a star musician of Goan bands. With his past penchant and passion for innovative, brilliant music, Shahu continues on what he loves to do best - hypnotize his listeners to a magical sway.

In his latest performance, Shahu captivated the audience at the Kuwait Goa Tiatristhanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) Konkani musical entitled 'Tiatristponn Devachem Dennem' held recently at Hawally AC Auditorium. He led a group of musicians orchestrating on his favorite keyboards as well as the saxophone.
With his ability to play different instruments, Shahu also leads a band in Kuwait called 2..S#arp.
With 2..S#arp, Shahu's music spans a broad range of harmonies, from Goan and foreign-inspired music to more modern trends with mixtures of genres and ethnic elements. The group is quite popular among Goans, they have even played alongside Goa's topmost band Forefront and many other local bands.
Few however know that Shahu, a dynamic talent with his keyboard, began his tryst with music drumming his way into the hearts of his school-mates at his school's Annual Gatherings, propelling him into the musical horizon forever. He is the alumnus of St. Francis Xavier H. School Macazana and Guardian Angel College, Sanvordem.
Evolving into an ace drummer, he had the rare and splendid opportunity of honing his musical skills under the baton of Chris Perry, the eternal icon and consummate genius of Goan music and playing alongside his son Errol Perry. With music flowing in his veins, his drum beats reverberated in many well-known Goan bands of the nineties such as 'Ultimate', 'Magic Touch', 'The News', 'Human Status', 'Black Lace', etc, to name a few. Shahu disclosed that he played in over 1000 weddings as a drummer with these groups.
But it was his evolution into a keyboardist that shot him into instant fame. Interestingly, Shahu switched over to the keyboards not on his own volition but at the suggestion of Fr. Livio D'Mello under whose cudgel he played for the choir at St. Francis Xavier's church, Macasana. From then on there was no looking back.
Shahu has indeed come a long way with his association with music spanning over a decade. His musical creativity was elevated further after his arrival in Kuwait in October 1999. He began with a bang in Kuwait-based director Jose Rod's unmatched Broadway hit 'Tujem Nanv Vhodd zaum' which was staged all over the Middle East and back home in Goa.
Shahu has also played in Muscat, Doha, Bahrain, Bangalore, Darjeeling, etc, and performed for top directors such as Prem Kumar, Roseferns, Jacob, Menino de Bandar, Pascoal Rodrigues, C.D. Silva, John D' Silva, Ben Evangelist, Rosario Rodrigues, etc, apart from all the directors in Kuwait. He also did a short musical stint playing live music at Dubai's famous Viva Goa hotel.
Shahu's most challenging one-man performance was in Mini Mario's 'Kiteak Ho Bazar Cholta?' staged in Kuwait in 2007. "I had to pick-up the notes on the troupe's arrival on the morning of the show and I can proudly say that I played to perfection without proper rehearsals," says Shahu, adding further, "with musical notes handy, I can play non stop music for over 8 hours.
The young maestro can be aptly described as a consummate artist with an alluring passion and drive for music. Undoubtedly his heart thumps 'musical' beats, for when it comes to music he is simply indefatigable, endowed with an amazing genius -- coupled with a prodigious memory for music.
Shahu reached the highpoint of his career when he was roped in as the music composer by the doyen of Konkani stage, the legendary Rosario Rodrigues wherein his captivating rhythm set aflame many of the unforgettable hits like 'Hanv Kallukant Sandlim' where Shahu pioneered the unique 'one man band' concept providing the entire spectrum of music on a single keyboard! Under the ace director's able tutelage Shahu had a free rein toying with refreshing, innovative ideas which enabled him to break new grounds by pushing hard the frontiers of Goan music.
With sky being the limit, Shahu went on to produce innumerable chart busting scores for numerous hit dramas and musicals which gained him popularity of a household name.
Music apart, Shahu is an intensely endearing and an adorable human being who attaches great value to friendships and family ties. Blessed with a wonderful wife (Clemmie) and a cherubic son named Aerosmith, and daughter Acasia, Shahu is a devoted husband, a doting father and a dutiful son.
Sensitive and devout to the core, Shahu plays for the Holy Family Cathedral Church choir (Kuwait) for the 8.00 a.m mass every Friday since 1999. Time and experience have greatly enriched his remarkable musical abilities and today Shahu continues to add increasing complexity and refinement to his astounding gift of music which is sure to hold the audience in a thrall for years to come!

Prince Jacob's wake-up call in "ZAIAT ZAGE"
PRINCE Jacob is all set to present his Konkani drama "Zaiat Zage" - 70 mm Entertainment in Kuwait on 13th November 2009 (Friday) at the Daiya Fencing Club Hall (2nd Ring Road-Daiya) at 4:15 p.m. sharp. "I was crying bitterly at the death of my father and suddenly, I heard the audience laugh", recalling a scene from Roseferns' Akant (one of his early dramas) he says, "From that instant I realized that the audience expected only comedy from me." Several laughter filled years later, Antonio Pereira crowned Minguel Jacob Carmo Luis Fernandes, the Prince of Comedy after a laugh-riot role in Tapot – hence was born Prince Jacob.
It began at a tender age of 13 for the then Don Bosco Oratory student when late Rosario Dias introduced him in Chuk Hanvench Adarli, ever since, there was no looking back, recalling his Oratory days he remembers his mentor Fr. Henry Torra, who instilled a certain discipline in him and bro, Felix who imparted valuable tips in composing songs and skits. A front runner in singing, acting and debates, Jacob owes his success as an able orator to teacher, Fatima Rebello who shaped him up initially.
"They say it is dangerous to give a mike to an orator and the dog, a bone", laughs Jacob. The keen interest for tiatrs was developed in the formative years. "I used to accompany the late Souza Ferrao for his plays and manage to get a free entry for his tiatrs." Ferrao was encouraging and even introduced Jacob to Melody King, late Alfred Rose, who predicted potential in him. Late Jacinto Vaz Charlie Chaplin of Konkani stage gave his budding career the necessary thrust by constant encouragements.
Jacob's young talent was then tapped by star directors like Ligorio Fernandes and Roseferns an in 1985, teaming up with brother Humbert and Milagres he established, Prince Jacob Production. In his initial days, Jacob was known for directing tiatrs beginning with the alphabet P, "I did 25 tiatrs right from Pinzrem to Padri, while one tiatr was being staged my audience would suggest the title of my next venture," he recalls. After exhausting P he went on to R with Rodonaka.
Today he commands a dedicated fan following not just in Goa but across India, Gulf States & UK. To tiatr loving Goans spresd over the world, Prince Jacob represents a vibrant brand ambassador of contemporary tiatrs. A serious actor who graduated to comedy, Jacob is a born entertainer, "To have the ability to provoke laughter is a God-given talent". He says. "I thank God as I feel I have helped the audience in putting their sorrows away", Jacob reveals saying if he wasn't a tiatrist he could have been a priest.
Jacob has dared to bring bold innovations to tiatrs – from making a Doberman act in Pavnnek, doing magic in Raza Raani and four roles in Rupnem – based on the Marathi hit-play Sahi-re-Sahi. Jacob took his entire star cast to Mumbai to watch it before doing his Konkani adaptation and he watched it 12 times. Jacob's works included 16 centuries in tiatrs which have been appreciated by his countless fans who have helped him bag awards like Goa Post, Gulab and Kala Academy. Recently, Jacob is ruling the air waves through Big FM 92.7 as its celebrity RJ. "I have entered people's hearts through tiatrs, now I want to enter their homes", says the producer of 11 audio releases.
Jacob feels, as a tiatrist can be very exhausting when you are an actor, writer, producer and director, and to elucidate the dilemma to his children, Jacob introduced his eldest daughter Jewel Valankanni in Passport and recently son Jason in Viswas. "Now Emerald is beginning to realize that it may be her next", he says of his youngest daughter. Apart from tiatrs, Jacob has also produced Padri – a film that has so far been screened 315 times – it ran for a record two months (4 shows daily) at Margao and two weeks in Panjim, and also one show each in State of Bahrain & Kuwait. His other VCDs on St. Francis Xavier and Fr. Jose Vaz have also been well received.
In his latest, "Zaiat Zage", Jacob is giving a clarion call to Goans to wake-up and defend Goa. "I foresee what will happen ahead and portray it in my script," he says. "it's a must for every Goan, and is based in a simple village and the idiosyncratic sets determine the outlook of the topic. The main plot is comprehensive of the story and comedy" he adds to Heraldo correspondent, Cedric Da Costa.

Seminar on Konkani Associations and Clubs in Mumbai held
MUMBAI: A Konkani Seminar on ‘how to bring together all Konkani speaking people of Mumbai, The Konkani Associations of Mumbai and their activities and how to protect the Goan clubs and put them to good use’ was held on 1st of November 2009 at the meeting Room of St Sebastian Goan High school, Dabul, Mumbai at 4.00 pm under the aegis of GRAF (Goan Review Art Foundation) a cultural body of The Goan Review.
This was followed by a condolence meeting to pay tributes to H. Britton.
In his introductory talk Fausto V. da Costa, president of GRAF, recollected the seminars held in the recent past of the activities carried out to save the Goan (others as well) Clubs in Mumbai. He said he has now invited the renowned Management Consultant and Banker Mr John D’Silva to share his ideas on how to put the clubs into effective use.
Speaking of the Konkani Associations in Mumbai he said that there are many Konkani associations in Mumbai but very little is being done to promote Konkani language and Konkani Culture. He pointed out that the functioning of these associations is far from satisfactory. He said it is high time we forget the differences and come together as a Federation of associations before we lose our identity. In conclusion he stated that we should not forget that Konkani as a language will not die because if not the Goans someone else will keep it alive but Goans will go into oblivion.
Felix Dias, President of the Federation of Clubs apprised those present of the status of the clubs. In spite of all efforts not many clubs besides those which had already registered have come forward. About 20 clubs applications are under processing. He emphasized the need of registering the clubs as soon as possible and all help to implement this will be provided. He also mentioned that the initial fee is about Rs 3000/- for registration however in case any club cannot afford it he can provide a sponsor. He further stated that the Federation will assist the members in all respect including assistance against harassment from landlords, BMC, Police and MADHA. The Federation will also guide members when their building come up for redevelopment by MADHA or the landlord or developer. Dias highlighted the fact that it is important to be a member of the federation because the federation can always take up the case of the clubs whenever called for.
Mr. John D’Silva briefly spoke on the origin of the Clubs. At that time the concept of the clubs was relevant and important. But now it has lost its importance as far as the effective use of the clubs is concerned. He pointed out the fact that the total property value of the clubs will run into crores of rupees. Most of the clubs now are lying vacant with just a handful members staying . He suggested that members from different clubs should stay in one such club and make effective use of the club and the vacant clubs can be put into alternate use. Thus the money generated can be used for providing medical and educational help to the poor and deserving persons.
Lawrence D’Souza, Kamani spoke on how to get all Konkani speaking people under one umbrella. He said in Mumbai itself there are 12 lakh Konkani speaking people including Hindus Muslims and Christians. As of now Konkani is written in 5 scripts and there are a number of Konkani associations. In our parishes itself there are 4 or 5 associations and sometimes the same people are members and office-bearers of a couple of them. How can one do justice to the association under such circumstances? He wondered.
He pointed out the fact that the Shettys and Pujaris have their own Bhavans with all the facilites under one roof. This helps the association in a very big way effectively. We Konknis should also have one Bhavan whereby we could strengthen our solidarity and therby Konkani language and the Konkani culture.
Way back in 1942 some visionaries like Prof. Armand Menezes, Rev. (Dr.) H.O. Mascarenhas, Xennoy Goembab, Dr Menino D’Souza and others formed the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Mumbai and today it is trying to get all Konkani associations together. It has members of all creeds and has now thrown open its membership to all association for a nominal fee of Rs 260/- for life and also to individuals. In case someone finds it difficult to pay , it will be sponsored. KBMM is now moving the Maharastra govt. to help it to set up a Konkani Bhavan of it own in Mumbai so that Konkani language and culture can be promoted in a big way. A delegation of the senior members have met the CM and the Home minister who have assured them of help.
Afflicto Luis speaking on the work being done by the Konkani Association in Mumbai, said he has become the vice president of the Goan Institute, Mumbai with the aim of promoting Konkani language and culture as one of his objectives. He added that in the present environment he finds it difficult to do this because most members pay little attention to Konkani.
The Seminar concluded by paying rich tributes to the renowned singer of the Konkani stage H Britton who passed away recently in Goa. At the start of the condolence meeting Fausto da Costa remembered the other prominent Goans who have passed away in the recent past – Prof. Olivinho Gomes, Noel Lima Leitao, Narayan Fugro and the budding tiatrist Comedian Edisson Fernandes, besides H. Britton and observed a one minutes silence as a sign of respect to the departed. Tiatrist Michael Martins and John Gomes Kokoy paid rich tributes to H. Britton in their eulogy. Gomes said that we do not give the due praise to a person when he is alive but do so after he is dead.. He said H Britton was a great composer and a singer. He nostalgically remembered his first song ‘Nariyal Pani’ and his other songs with a double meaning.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by GRAF Secretary Gable D’Souza.

Seminar on Konkani Associations and Clubs in Mumbai held
MUMBAI: A Konkani Seminar on ‘how to bring together all Konkani speaking people of Mumbai, The Konkani Associations of Mumbai and their activities and how to protect the Goan clubs and put them to good use’ was held on 1st of November 2009 at the meeting Room of St Sebastian Goan High school, Dabul, Mumbai at 4.00 pm under the aegis of GRAF (Goan Review Art Foundation) a cultural body of The Goan Review.
This was followed by a condolence meeting to pay tributes to H. Britton.
In his introductory talk Fausto V. da Costa, president of GRAF, recollected the seminars held in the recent past of the activities carried out to save the Goan (others as well) Clubs in Mumbai. He said he has now invited the renowned Management Consultant and Banker Mr John D’Silva to share his ideas on how to put the clubs into effective use.
Speaking of the Konkani Associations in Mumbai he said that there are many Konkani associations in Mumbai but very little is being done to promote Konkani language and Konkani Culture. He pointed out that the functioning of these associations is far from satisfactory. He said it is high time we forget the differences and come together as a Federation of associations before we lose our identity. In conclusion he stated that we should not forget that Konkani as a language will not die because if not the Goans someone else will keep it alive but Goans will go into oblivion.
Felix Dias, President of the Federation of Clubs apprised those present of the status of the clubs. In spite of all efforts not many clubs besides those which had already registered have come forward. About 20 clubs applications are under processing. He emphasized the need of registering the clubs as soon as possible and all help to implement this will be provided. He also mentioned that the initial fee is about Rs 3000/- for registration however in case any club cannot afford it he can provide a sponsor. He further stated that the Federation will assist the members in all respect including assistance against harassment from landlords, BMC, Police and MADHA. The Federation will also guide members when their building come up for redevelopment by MADHA or the landlord or developer. Dias highlighted the fact that it is important to be a member of the federation because the federation can always take up the case of the clubs whenever called for.
Mr. John D’Silva briefly spoke on the origin of the Clubs. At that time the concept of the clubs was relevant and important. But now it has lost its importance as far as the effective use of the clubs is concerned. He pointed out the fact that the total property value of the clubs will run into crores of rupees. Most of the clubs now are lying vacant with just a handful members staying . He suggested that members from different clubs should stay in one such club and make effective use of the club and the vacant clubs can be put into alternate use. Thus the money generated can be used for providing medical and educational help to the poor and deserving persons.
Lawrence D’Souza, Kamani spoke on how to get all Konkani speaking people under one umbrella. He said in Mumbai itself there are 12 lakh Konkani speaking people including Hindus Muslims and Christians. As of now Konkani is written in 5 scripts and there are a number of Konkani associations. In our parishes itself there are 4 or 5 associations and sometimes the same people are members and office-bearers of a couple of them. How can one do justice to the association under such circumstances? He wondered.
He pointed out the fact that the Shettys and Pujaris have their own Bhavans with all the facilites under one roof. This helps the association in a very big way effectively. We Konknis should also have one Bhavan whereby we could strengthen our solidarity and therby Konkani language and the Konkani culture.
Way back in 1942 some visionaries like Prof. Armand Menezes, Rev. (Dr.) H.O. Mascarenhas, Xennoy Goembab, Dr Menino D’Souza and others formed the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Mumbai and today it is trying to get all Konkani associations together. It has members of all creeds and has now thrown open its membership to all association for a nominal fee of Rs 260/- for life and also to individuals. In case someone finds it difficult to pay , it will be sponsored. KBMM is now moving the Maharastra govt. to help it to set up a Konkani Bhavan of it own in Mumbai so that Konkani language and culture can be promoted in a big way. A delegation of the senior members have met the CM and the Home minister who have assured them of help.
Afflicto Luis speaking on the work being done by the Konkani Association in Mumbai, said he has become the vice president of the Goan Institute, Mumbai with the aim of promoting Konkani language and culture as one of his objectives. He added that in the present environment he finds it difficult to do this because most members pay little attention to Konkani.
The Seminar concluded by paying rich tributes to the renowned singer of the Konkani stage H Britton who passed away recently in Goa. At the start of the condolence meeting Fausto da Costa remembered the other prominent Goans who have passed away in the recent past – Prof. Olivinho Gomes, Noel Lima Leitao, Narayan Fugro and the budding tiatrist Comedian Edisson Fernandes, besides H. Britton and observed a one minutes silence as a sign of respect to the departed. Tiatrist Michael Martins and John Gomes Kokoy paid rich tributes to H. Britton in their eulogy. Gomes said that we do not give the due praise to a person when he is alive but do so after he is dead.. He said H Britton was a great composer and a singer. He nostalgically remembered his first song ‘Nariyal Pani’ and his other songs with a double meaning.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by GRAF Secretary Gable D’Souza.

Renovation of the House of Pai Tiatrist
– Joao Agostinho Fernandes
Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) met the Chief Minister, Shri Digambar Kamat on 3rd November 2009 and discussed with him the need to renovate the house of Pai Tiatrist – Joao Agostinho Fernandes. The Chief Minister advised Mr. Cardozo to put up a proposal to him to that effect through TAG and that he would instruct the PWD or GSDIC department to do the needful.
Accordingly TAG has submitted a proposal to the Chief Minister to that effect so that the work of renovation is undertaken by the PWD or GSIDC departments on priority.
Shri. Cardozo, on behalf of tiatr fraternity, has also expressed gratitude to Shri. Digambar Kamat for his prompt willingness to immediately renovate the collapsed portion of the house situated at Margao, Goa.

Zooming past on his cycle with a basket laden with bakery bread enters the poder. Early mornings and late evenings in Goan villages will never miss the sound of his horn. It's not just the sound of the horn that gets us up to our feet with some modshe and a bag, it's also the prospect of having in hand crusty, hot and fresh pao, undo, poyi, katre, pokshie and the crisp kakon. It all seems even more appreciated in the rains.
The poder starts out from the bakery with his supplies and moves on to conquer the villager's hearts. He then goes back regularly for refills of goodness, depending on the rounds he makes. The rains don't seem to dampen their spirit, in fact they cover their baskets with blue or yellow plastic and the bread is still as hot as it was from the bakery. The basket that the bread is carried in are all traditional handmade cane baskets and some horns ..are pretty old, being handed over from one poder to another.., says Sushant.
Giselle D'souza, a friend studying in Mumbai said she actually misses the sound of the poders constant horning and when she comes down to Goa she waits near her window for the familiar sound. In villages the poder is somewhat of a necessity, even with the setting up of modern general stores. They have their regular customers. I think its because of the traditionality of it all. Also there is still a demand for Goan bread, says Ms Rodrigues, who faithfully buys bread from her poder everyday.
The village poder hasn't changed much with people buying on a regular basis and from their windows when it rains. The city on the other hand does have a need for the poder too and amidst the traffic he cycles to colonies and buildings where he places the bread in plastic bags that are tied to string and let down to him from a higher story. This is quite amusing to watch. Also poders provide to city shops and general stores, where on can purchase it from if they've missed him.
Many believed that when the Portuguese left the tradition of the poder would leave with them, but surprisingly the tradition stuck and was well accepted in Goa because it was a door-to-door service, also the bakery system and the ovens remained, families were altogether associated with bread making and the tradition continued. For many poor families the pao or undo is the cheapest food available. All these factors secured the poders activities in the villages and they then expanded to the city too. Restaraunts, hotels and eateries also do have a need for poders as many a tourist want to taste authentic goan bread.
It is a known fact that the life of a poder is hard and risky. There are times when demand is less and they have to return to the bakery with some of their produce. There are times when they have chest diseases due to long hours besides the oven. The competition is increasing and getting varied. But the tradition has continued. I sometime feel it is quite hard especially in the rains. But you get used to it after some time, says Sushant, a village poder.
Just like a hundred other goan traditions that are gradually diminishing I think poders should be patronised by the government. A small scale industry should be set up around it whereby losses are covered, equipment is repaired and they are provided with health care and proper leave. Services should not be taken for granted by a people, and more so a service that sustains the health and well-being! They should in fact be revered!

HOUSE OF " PAI TIATRIST " partial collapse
A part of the rear portion of the over 140 years old “House of Pai Tiatrist “ at Modsai Behind the Holy Spirit Institute Margao collapsed early this cold morning at around 0413 hrs IST (on All Soul’s Day 2nd November) as per information received by this writer early this morning from Ms Ana Maria Carolina Quadros Fernandes, 77 yrs daughter in law of “Pai Tiatrist” late Joao Agostinho Fernandes.
It may be recalled that the Rajya Sabha MP Mr. Shantaram L Naik had last year in July 2008 impressed upon the Goa Government to preserve such old houses of eminent personalities for posterity on the lines of the “Shanti Niketan” of Rabindranath Tagore, at Kolkatta, West Bengal India so that future generations will be inspired by the works of these personalities who rose to great heights under trying circumstances unlike the modern day wherwithal. This could also help in promoting cultural tourism in the State.
The issue also figured at the Ad hoc Committee meet on Budgetary demands 2009-2010 of Govt of Goa held in June 2009.

The Government it is learnt has through the Town and Country Planning Department directed them to formulate a scheme for the purpose . While the Department of Tourism could consider to include such houses in the tourist visit itinery There are other houses too which need to be preserved for posterity, viz; the houses of Francisco Luis Gomes, at Navelim Dom Moraes, at Santa Cruz poet Baki Bab Borkar at Borim etc.
Interestingly the renowned architect Mr. Gerard Da Cunha from Torda Alto Porvorim Bardez Goa who has since 17th October, 2008 last year despite his extremely busy schedule had been drawing plans for the restoration of the house and a few structures thereon for the upkeep of the same .
Besides that it could help sustain the income of the inmates viz the daughter –in-law , her daughter, Ms Sharmila Fernandes and their two minor children Sonali and Sanil Fernandes through self employment.
Indeed their contribution towards maintaining the cultural heritage of our land by preserving this House has been appreciated by several persons and especially NRI's who have visited their humble home since 20th July 2008 when the indoor auditorium of Ravindra Bhavan was named after "Pai Tiatrist"
According to Ms Ana Maria Carolina Quadros Fernandes ( the wife of tiatrist Antonelio (Tony ) Conceicao Fernandes –son of Pai Tiatrist ) who spoke to this writer stated that she and her daughter despite their financial constraints have boldly shooed away prospective realtors who were eyeing the 449 m2 property, as they stand determined to honour both in letter and spirit the intention of late Joao Agostinho Fernandes (14.12.1871 to 29.08.1947 ) and his spouse Regina Fernandes ( 16.11.1880 – 20.12.1908 ) who was the first lady to ever act on stage on 22.11.1904 at a time when women making public appearances was taboo. Incidentally it was only much later that Kamalabhai Gokhale in the late 1930;s who came forth to don the honours on stage.
Mr Da Cunha Arch recently on 27th October, 2009 schedule, visited the site to give the final touches to the restoration plan. The part which collapsed today is otherwise in the restoration plan intended to be demolished according to Mr Da Cunha who spoke to this writer , today when informed of the mishap. However the inherent fear of the inmates that this may make the house vulnerable to theft and a fear that the main part of the house too may eventually collapse owing to the vagaries of the climate is indeed cause for their concern.
Ms Sharmila Fernandes, infact reported the matter telephonically to Mr. Shantaram L Naik RS MP with the hope that efforts be expedited to set in motion restoration of the same and expressed her bonafide fears to him of imminent disaster.
No sooner the news of the part collapse of this House reached the electronic and print media they converged at the site and examined the extent of damage to the same apparently to impress upon the Goa Government to step in at the earliest.
Mr Shantaram L Naik MP Rajya Sabha alongwith this writer visited the House this evening at 1730 hrs to assess the damage. He expressed concern and promised to move the Government to render immediate assistance to ensure the restoration promptly. He perused the draft plan for restoration of the House and requested the members of the family to get the restoration estimates be worked out so that he could set the ball rolling as he will be proceeding to New Delhi tommorrow for the forthcoming month long winter session of Parliament.
Both Ms Ana Fernandes and her daughter Ms Sharmila were indeed pleased by the response and sympathy invoked by the media and the voluntary visit of the Hon;ble MP Mr Shantaram Naik and had a word of praise for both for their efforts to redress their unfortunate plight.
A large section of the tiatrist also conveyed their concern to the family telephonically and assured them whatever help in their noble cause towards tiatr and tiatrist. Other visitors also visited the House to express solidarity with them in the matter.

Mr. Naik who visited house of Pai Tiatrist, this evening, after hearing the news that one of the walls of the house had collapsed, said in a statement issued today that he has decided to submit the proposal to the government afresh with a plan which the family has got drawn from a private architect.
Mr. Naik said that he had sent his proposal earlier to the Chief Minister on 02nd September 2008, however since no concrete steps were taken in that regard, he has now decided to submit the proposal afresh with a plan drawn to make the government task easier.
Mr Naik said he has spoken to the Chief Minister Shri Digamber Kamat and the Director of Archives and Archeology Shri Manohar Dicholkar, in this regard.
Mr. Naik said that late Shri Fernandes wrote about 26 tiatrs (Konkani dramas) out of which, 16 were staged. Many scripts of the tiatrist written by Shri Fernandes have been handed over to Goa Konkani Akademy, which are required to be preserved using modern microfilming and or digital technology.
Mr. Naik said the house of Pai Tiratrist which is standing on a plot of 400 sq/mts, and which occupies about 200 sq/mts, is a house with mud walls and it has to be repaired and restored to honour the great artist. Mr Naik said by restoring such houses, the government will be doing a great service to those who have devoted their entire life for a particular art.
During his visit to the house, Mr. Naik met the daughter in law of Shri Fernandes, Mrs. Ana Maria Carolina Quadros Fernandes and, daughter Mrs. Sharmila Fernandes, and Social Activist, Shri Godfrey Gonsalves.
