Synopsis: The past 50 years since Liberation have been fraught with storms and history-altering events. It has been a time during which Goans had to struggle – fight and shed their blood – to retain their identity. To acquire a better perspective of this struggle, one has to go back in time, to decades and centuries before December 1961.

Goa Rewound looks at mainly three areas that played a major role in changing Goan identity during the period the Portuguese ruled the territory – politics, language and religion. Rather than looking at history and recounting it, this book takes a fresh view of how events that occurred in Goa after Liberation have their genesis, not in policies of the local government or in ideas that emerged weeks or months prior to the events, but in colonial policies and laws that were enacted centuries earlier.

For instance one chapter argues how the rather ‘surprising result’ of the very first election of 1963 in the then Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu and the subsequent Opinion Poll outcome should not have created the ‘surprise’ they did as history would easily have shown that this was bound to happen. Another chapter takes into account the bloody language agitation of 1985-1987 that saw seven people being killed and the state brought to a standstill on various occasions, and looks back into history to show how the people were divided by the Portuguese on linguistic basis which led to this agitation. Similarly, though it is mistakenly believed outside Goa that Christians are a majority in the State, the 2001 census shows that the community comprises 26% of the population, yet it plays a major role and the Church in Goa is in a position to make politically and socially sensitive statements that get the government listening. Yet another chapter deals with the town of Cuncolim and how events that occurred in the village in the 16th century still reverberate today and influence incidents in the 20th century.

About the Author: The writer is primarily a journalist, having spent over 20 years in the profession. He is currently Assistant Resident Editor, The Times of India, Goa Edition. Prior to this he was Assistant Editor with Goa Today.
He has written extensively on political, development, social and environmental issues affecting the state of Goa and as such has an in-depth knowledge of the State, its history, culture, heritage and its current politico-socio-economic state of affairs. He also has two books to his credit, the novel ‘Touched by the Toe’ that is set in XVI century Goa and has translated essays by Jose Inacio Candido de Loyola from Portuguese to English and published in a book entitled ‘Passionate and Unrestrained’.

Milagres de Chandor to present Mother's Day in Dubai and Kuwait

Tiatr Review - Mother’s day

BY JP PEREIRA

‘Mother’s Day’, a drama from Milagres de Chandor, tells the story of an ungrateful mother, who creates enmity between brothers and in the end, has to pay the price for her misdeeds. Dylan and Olavio are brothers who care for each other. Their mother has taught them the importance of love between siblings. Dylan has worked in Europe, looked after his mother and brother, has build a double storey bungalow and on mother’s day, hands it over to his mother. The mother wants another gift from both her sons; she wants them to get married to beautiful women. While Olavio brings home Manavi, a good looking girl, Dylan wants to marry Suzanna, whose face is covered with burn scars. The mother loses her head and demands that Dylan should either leave his lady love or leave the house. Then begins a display of cruelty, first to the scarred girl, then to the other one as she is unable to bear a child.

The setting displays a two storeyed bungalow although most of the action happens outside. The pre-interval scene is enacted well. The dance sequence by Hazel and Franky is new to the Konkani stage and some of the jokes are very amusing. Annie Quadros is perfect as the evil, cruel and dominating mother. Crostina as Manavi does her role well and Sunita is perfect as the ill treated Suzanna. Hazel is fine in the character she plays. Mathew does a great act as Dylan. Frankie as Olavio and Milagres as Shamir play their roles well.

Ben Evangelisto, Humbert, Brian and Doretti provide the humour. The sequence when Humbert comes dressed as a woman is extremely funny. Doretti displays good talent and a fine sense of dressing at times, Manu, Vincy (trumpet), Ashley (bass), Wilson (drums) and Elffio (Keyboard) provide the music. Elffio does a good background score during the acts and in between the acts there are nice songs from Hazel, Annie, Lawry Travasso, Francis de Tuem, Xavier Gomes, Marcus Vaz and Ben Evangelisto.

GOA's FAMOUS PLAYBACK SINGER ADOLF FERNANDES

GOA's FAMOUS PLAYBACK SINGER ADOLF TO FEATURE IN
COMEDIAN PHILIP'S 3D KONKANI MUSICAL SHOW "ANI, ANIK ZAIEM"

Goa’s famous playback singer ADOLF (of Konkani film Bhureantlo Music fame) is one of the top singers for Comedian Philip’s 3D Konkani Musical Show titlted “Ani, Anik Zaiem?” which is scheduled on 9th September 2011 at the American International School auditorium at Maidan Hawalli, Kuwait.  Adolf Fernandes’ singing career spans from for almost three decades in Kuwait for which he sang for the famous Goan musical bands “Hot Sand” and later “Top Ranks”.  “There was no show without us”, he beams with a smile.  We used to get all the top shows and that there never was a big show in Kuwait without “Top Ranks”.  Adolf was the first to start playing Konkani songs for the social events here in Kuwait. Earlier this Bombay-based singer jammed up with Kuwait’s one of the topmost musician Socorro D’Mello for couple of shows and also with Top Ranks.   Together with his better half, Cynthia Fernandes ex-Phantom Revival who played in Taj  Mahal Hotel, Mumbai for fifteen years, and was a hot favorite and most sought after band on the Mumbai’s  Wedding Scenes when they came out from Taj I saw the great  Braz Gonsalves (world renowned Jazz Musician who played for Jazz festivals in Europe representing India) mesmerized at one wedding which I was present when Cynthia sang Wind Beneath my Wing.  The couple does not hesitate to go off with an opportunity to sing together – be it a social event or a private celebrations, among friends.  Adolf sang with Chris Perry in Dubai for a brief period before returning back to Kuwait, as well as with the renowned Monsarrat Bros in Goa who produced the Konkani audio presentation titled “Hello Lorna”.  Adolf  mesmerized singers on another audio cassette called “Lambada In Goa” together with Lawrence De Tiracol and  with Lorna Cordeiro in yet another audio cassette called “Besaum” (in which he recorded two duets with Lorna and a solo performance).  Adolf works as a senior sales executive for Liner services with Inchcape Shipping Services in Kuwait.   He delighted the audiences in Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) Konkani Mega musical shows in the past and to his credit, he has the unique distinction to render songs with Jose Rod as well as with Lorna in Kuwait.  Adolf was the star singer for the cultural presentation put up by Goan Cultural Centre during the Global Goan Convention 2010 held in Kuwait under the auspices of the Goa NRI Felicitation Centre at Crowne Plaza Hotel and completely astounded the delegates attending from over 15 countries with his immortal Konkani hits 'Nokre' ani "Adeus".  He considers his favourite musician and idol, the late Chris Perry who produced the hit Konkani film in 1977 titled Bhureantlo Munis" and also composed the lyrics and the music which propelled him into the world of 'playback singers' and carving his name on the Konkani film circuit.

Sharon takes Konkani Film to the World

Sharon Mazarello the Producer and Director of the film ‘TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO? flew into Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) this evening to participate in the Addis International Film Festival 2011, accompanied by Wilmix Wilson Mazarello, the Co-Producer of the film. Sharon’s Konkani Film “TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO?” has been selected to be screened at the Addis International Film Festival 2011.

Although the Film Festival will take place over four  days from the 23rd June to 26th June 2011, the second day of the Festival [24th June 2011] - 2.05 pm to 4.05 pm will be a proud moment for all of us Goans and Konkani lovers as TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO? will actually be screened at Gullele Sub-City Youth Center Cinema Hall, in the presence of an elite group of filmmakers from all over the world. Till date TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO? is only the second Konkani film to be screened at an International Film Festival, the first being PALTADDCHO MUNIS by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar.
Best wishes from Goans and Konkani speaking people all over the world go with Sharon & Wilson as they travel to the African Continent as ambassadors of the Konkani Film Industry of Goa.
Sharon, whose fans identify her as the “Voice of Goa”, revolutionized singing in Konkani Tiatrs now brings more name, fame and recognition to all Tiatrists of Goa, with this rare 'filmy' achievement.

Out of over more than a 1000 Films submitted for selections at the Addis International Film Festival TUM KITEM KORTOLO ASLO? was among the few that reached the final round of selections and was selected for the Festival.  Along with Sharon Mazarello’s Tum Kitem kortolo Aslo?’ from Goa (India) some of the other films that have been selected at the Addis International Film Festival include: Water First by Amy Hart (U.K), Woman in White by Gry Winther (Cuba), The Trial by Joan Robinson (Australia),  The Wages of Debt by Jean Pierre Carlon (France), The Son of the Sea by Roberto Aznar (Spain), The New South of Italy by Pino Esposito (Italy), The 10 conditions of Love by Jeff Daniels (China), Second Chance by Busang Motsumi and Shike Olsen (South Africa), Presumed Guilt by Roberto Hernandez & Geoffry Smith (Mexico), and  No One Bothered by Josephine Boxwell (U.K.)

When asked how she felt about receiving this rare honour, Sharon humbly answered “It is an honour for Goa and Konkani” and then added “When put to the test Goan Filmmakers CAN measure up to any international level”. While at the Festival, they expect to learn a lot more on films by interacting with all the International Film Producers of the World.

Incidentally this was the first Konkani film to be premiered outside India.  The film was well received at the premiere show by the Konkani film lovers in Kuwait, which was screened by the Kuwait National Cinema Company.
The  film has just completed 100 public screenings in Goa recently and to mark this occasion, ShaMaz Films, in association with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, organized a function to felicitate the artistes featuring in the film of the film which was followed by a public screening of the film at the Pai Tiatrist hall at the Ravindra Bhavan.
The artistes from the film who were feted were Claron Mazarello, Franky Gonsalves, Pradeep Naik, Fernino Goes, Virginia Morais, Roseferns, Menino de Bandar, Trinidad, Comedian Jimmy, Franky Gonsalves, Remy de Welly, Tivena mazarello, Clinton Mazarello, Anthony, Elvis Mascarenhas, Kevin D’Mello and Frazer Fernandes.

The film’s producers ShamaZ Films (Goa) have decided to take things to the next level with a contest. The question will be based on the film itself. Given the situation it portrays, males will have to answer the question posed by the woman in the film. “If the man were to be in that situation, what would he do? is what we’d like to know from the answers to this contest,” informed Sharon. Renewed with new vigor, given the response Sharon has received from the Goan audiences as well as abroad, the film is about emancipation of women. As such, in an endeavor to orchestrate change in attitudes towards women through her film, Sharon Mazarello has thrown a question open to all males. Three winners will receive gifts worth Rs 1000 each and their stories will be published along with their photograph on a local daily, besides the next souvenir after 200 screenings of 'Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo?'.   Entries will be accepted till 1st July 2011 to be mailed to Rhythm House, 12-A, Ashirwad building, near Meenakshi Hotel, below City Hospital, Margao, Goa.  The feature film is the first Konkani film to be directed by a woman and first Konkani film that is 100 per cent Goan – the producer, director, screenplay writer, cinematographer, music director, editor, choreographer, musicians, singers and actors are all Goans and the film has been entirely shot in Goa. It’s the first Konkani film to use professional choreography, also involving Goan fire-dancers. ‘Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo?’ is also the first Konkani film to use an orchestra of 35 Goan musicians and the first Goan film with a Dolby-sound.

Three Cheers for Goan Film Producers!
