Goan stars from Kuwait to tour Europe & Canada

Famous Goan stage artiste Cajetan de Sanvordem and musician Shahu Almeida based in Kuwait are selected to perform in Mariano Fernandes' latest Konkani tiatr 'Soglleank Nomoskar' going on tour to Portugal, Germany, England and Canada in the month of June 2010.

The drama which releases in Bombay will be staged at Portugal on 13th June, Germany on 15th, at Swindon's Wyvern Theatre (morning and evening shows) on 23rd June, and at Copland High School, Wembley High Road - Middlx - Wembley on 27th June.

Presented by Konkani Dramatic Association, and written & directed by Mariano, the drama involves Cajetan de Sanvordem in one of the leading roles with top artistes Aplon, Olga, Tracy, Joana, Francis De Tuem, Jr. Rod, Comedian Domnic, Comedian Luis Bachchan, Anil Pednekar, Marcus, Mini Mario, etc, making the star cast of the troupe.

The musical score for the tour will be provided by Maestro Shahu, alone.

Kala Academy Award winner for Best Actor and Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Best Singer Award winner Cajetan Pereira is popularly known as Cajetan de Sanvordem.
Born to Jose Salvador and Maria Magdalena Pereira at Sanvordem-Goa, Cajetan first came into spotlight when he was just 8 years of age whilst singing in school and village dramas.

Cajetan's first appearance on Kuwait's stage was in P. Jose de Colva's drama 'Aiz Maka Faleam Tuka' in Keefan Hall in 1977, followed by Konkani dramas directed by Jenifer Rod, Aleixinho de Maxem, Benny de Aldona, and the list goes on. Initially he used to sing solos in each and every drama in Kuwait as well as act, specially when the role was based on expatriate topics.

Together with Marcus Vaz and Xavier Gomes, the famous trio Cajetan-Marcus- Xavier was created waves which enjoyed tremendous popularity in Kuwait as well as other Gulf countries and Goa.

Cajetan has acted in countless dramas. Prominent among them are of Late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa, M. Boyer, Remmie Colaco, Anthony San, H.Britton, Jose Rod, Roseferns, Jess Fernandes, Patrick Dourado, Vitorino Pereira, A. Morais, R. Morais, Rosario Dias, Chrismeena, Rosary Ferns, Marcus Vaz, Laurente Pereira, Mario de Majorda, Michael D'Silva, Xavier Gomes, Bonaventure D'Pietro, Jessy Dias, Jenifer Rod, Aleixinho de Maxem, Benny de Aldona, J.P. Parra, Tony Call, Mendes Bros., F.X.Pereira, F.Cardoz, Simon Gonsalves, Joe Ferrera, etc.

Cajetan has also played a lead role in the first Konkani E-Cinema 'Black Nhesop Atanchem Fashion' produced by T-Bush Films (yet to be released in cinemas in Goa).

Besides acting and singing Cajetan is a public figure in social activities. Time and again, he has been elected to several Indian organizations. He is the President of United Friends Club, a football association and Ex-President of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha (KGTS). He is also the President of Guardian Angel Club of Sanvordem (Kuwait), Head of Cultural Cell of Goan Welfare Society (GWS), and an active member of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF).

Apart from being a flamboyant actor, Cajetan is also a versatile compere. His voice, diction, flair and linguistic abilities, especially with his mother-tongue Konkani makes his presence felt vibrantly at Goan cultural programs and social gatherings. He is also good in penning slogans in Konkani. Cajetan's cursive 'handwriting' skill should be seen to be believed and his sense of humor heard to understand the simplicity of life.

Shahu may be recognized more in the genre of dramas. But behind his simplicity, is the unmistakable halo of his talent as a star musician of Goan bands in Kuwait. Shahu shines amongst the stellar bracket of Goa's top-notch musicians with his indispensable contribution towards the art. With his penchant and passion for innovative, brilliant music, Shahu continues on what he loves to do best – hypnotize his listeners to a magical sway.

In his last performance in Kuwait, Shahu captivated the audience at the KGTS Konkani musical held at Hawally AC Auditorium. He led a group of musicians orchestrating on his favorite keyboards as well as on the saxophone.

With his ability to play different instruments, Shahu leads a band in Kuwait called 2..S#arp with whom he has performed in other Middle-East countries like Qatar, Bahrain, etc.

With 2..S#arp, Shahu's music spans a broad range of harmonies, from Goan and foreign-inspired music to more modern trends with mixtures of Goan dulpods and ethnic elements. The group is quite popular among Goans in Kuwait. They have even played alongside Goa's topmost band Forefront and many other local bands.

Few however know that Shahu, a dynamic talent with his keyboard, began his tryst with music drumming his way into the hearts of his school-mates at his school's Annual Gatherings, propelling him into the musical horizon forever. He is the alumnus of St. Francis Xavier H. School Macazana and Guardian Angel College, Sanvordem.

Evolving into an ace drummer, he had the rare and splendid opportunity of honing his musical skills under the baton of Chris Perry, the eternal icon and consummate genius of Goan music and playing alongside his son Errol Perry who died recently. With music flowing in his veins, his drum beats reverberated in many well-known Goan bands of the nineties such as 'Ultimate', 'Magic Touch', 'The News', 'Human Status', 'Black Lace', etc, to name a few. Shahu disclosed that he played in over 1000 weddings as a drummer with these groups.

But it was his evolution into a keyboardist that shot him into instant fame. Interestingly, Shahu switched over to the keyboards not on his own volition but at the suggestion of Fr. Livio D'Mello under whose cudgel he played for the choir at St. Francis Xavier's church, Macasana. From then on there was no looking back.

Shahu has indeed come a long way with his association with music spanning over a decade. His musical creativity was elevated further after his arrival in Kuwait in October 1999. He began with a bang in Kuwait-based director Jose Rod's unmatched Broadway hit 'Tujem Nanv Vhodd Zaum' which was staged all over the Middle East and back home in Goa.

Shahu has also played dramas in Muscat, Doha, Bahrain, Bangalore, Darjeeling, etc, and performed for top directors such as Prem Kumar, Roseferns, Jacob, Menino de Bandar, Pascoal Rodrigues, C.D. Silva, John D' Silva, Ben Evangelist, Rosario Rodrigues, etc, apart from all the directors in Kuwait.
He also did a short musical stint playing live music at Dubai's famous Viva Goa hotel.

Shahu’s most challenging one-man performance was in Mini Mario's 'Kiteak Ho Bazar Cholta?' staged in Kuwait in 2007. "I had to pick-up the notes on the troupe's arrival on the morning of the show and I can proudly say that I played to perfection without suitable rehearsals," says Shahu, adding further, "with handy musical notes, I can play non stop music for over 8 hours.

The young maestro can be aptly described as a consummate artist with an alluring passion and drive for music. Undoubtedly his heart thumps 'musical' beats all the way through, for when it comes to music he is simply indefatigable, endowed with an amazing genius and coupled with a prodigious memory for music.

Shahu reached the highpoint of his career when he was roped in as the music composer by the doyen of Konkani stage, the legendary Rosario Rodrigues – Shakespeare of Konkani stage, wherein his captivating rhythm set aflame many of the unforgettable hits like 'Hanv Kallukant Sandlim' where Shahu pioneered the unique 'one man band' concept providing the entire spectrum of music on a single keyboard! Under the ace director's able tutelage Shahu had a free rein toying with refreshing, innovative ideas which enabled him to break new grounds pushing forward the frontiers of Goan music.

With sky being the limit, Shahu went on to produce innumerable chart busting scores for numerous hit dramas and musicals which gained him popularity.

Music apart, Shahu is an intensely endearing and an adorable human being who attaches great value to friendship and family ties. Blessed with a wonderful wife (Clemmie) and a cherubic son who is named Aerosmith, and daughter Acasia, Shahu is a devoted husband, a doting father and a dutiful son.

Sensitive and devout to the core, Shahu is a member of the Holy Family Cathedral Church choir (Kuwait). Time and experience have greatly enriched Shahu's remarkable musical abilities and today he continues to add increasing complexity and refinement to his astounding gift of music which is sure to hold the audience in Europe and Canada and Kuwait and Goa in a thrall for years to come!

"Konkani Classics Revisited",

Lilting rhythms of Konkani classics revived

Goa's beaches are not the only irresistible attraction the state has to offer - its music has always held a special charm. Liltingly melodious with catchy rhythms and a wonderful mix of west and east Konkani music is wins hearts everywhere. Saregama revisited the heritage collection of ageless classics of Konkani music and brought to life once again rare musical gems.

After releasing the album titled "Konkani Classics Revisited", the chief guest for the occasion, president of Tiatr Academy, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo said that he was happy to see an album with hits by Konkani stalwarts like Frank Fernand, Alfred Rose and M Alphonso. However, expressing his distaste for remixes because he felt that songs lost authenticity, Mr Cardozo made it a point to mention that he had clarified with Mr Felix Correia who recreated the music on whether he had retained the originality of the scores. Mr Correia had done his best to maintain originality. The album has given young Goan talent a platform. He requested Saregama to recognise young talent from Goa and thus prove to the world that Konkani music is not far behind.

About the Album: Konkani Classics Revisited

Volume One rediscovers the great master Alfred Rose, and his evergreen hits like ˜Janet and Linet', 'Viva la Goa', and 'Ye Johnny Ye'. Sung by none other than his daughter, Alria Rose D'Souza, along with other talented singers, this is the first time these remixed songs are being released in the CD format. The original music score and lyrics are by Alfred Rose. Compilation of songs and music recreated by Felix Correia.

Volume Two brings us the music of three other great Goan music masters, Chris Perry, Frank Fernand and M Alphonso. Sung by Kyra Pais and others, this CD contains popular songs like "Ambeanche Pan", "Mog Boom Boom" and "Marialena".

George Gonsalves: Serenading the Konkani stage

George Gonsalves: Serenading the Konkani stage

By J P Pereira

George Gonsalves, from Agassaim, is one of the best singers on the Konkani stage today. His deep well-modulated voice has enthralled discerning listeners of the Konkani stage. He is the son of Juliao and Lourdina Gonsalves and has loved being on-stage since the age of seven.

Juliao Gonsalves was a playwright staging ‘tiatr’ at the village level and the young George would sing and act in his father’s plays. After completing SSC at St Lawrence High School, Agassaim, George attained a degree in Fine Arts at the Goa College of Fine Arts, Panaji.

In between there were the performances on stage, in ‘tiatr’ by the late Jacinto Vaz and Danny de Ribandar. Later there were regular acts for nearly 14 years, in the Kala Academy tiatr competition, for various plays out of which he acted for John Crasto for five years. After a break, due to a busy schedule, he returned in ‘Thikann’ by Comedian 64 followed by ‘Mhaka Tuji Goroz Assa’ by Anthony San. There were also performances in plays by Pascoal Rodrigues, Dominic Carvalho, Ligorio Fernandes and Milagres de Chandor.

George has been a regular in operettas presented by Fr Peter Cardozo for the last 21 years. Playing the main role in these presentations during Lent, he was also cast in the highly appreciated ‘Padre Agnelo Onod Goyncho’. Besides shows in Goa, this opera was also staged in Bangalore, Mangalore and Mumbai. Presently, George acts for Alfie Productions, Divar and has been with the group for five years. He also sings for the ‘Mando’ Group, ‘Goenchim Noketram’ from Sarzora, Chinchinim, who have performed in Dubai, Delhi, Gujarat and Mumbai besides Goa.

George has the talent to write good lyrics. He has composed around 300 songs, including solos, duets, the ‘mando’ and ‘dulpods’. Besides these, he has also written plays and ‘zagor’. He has bagged awards for singing at the solo singing competition organized by the Kala Academy as well as prizes for duos and trios. ‘Goenkar’ was an audio album released by the talented singer. He also released video films titled ‘Seamen’ and ‘Khoinche Rukache Kantte’. The second named was a ‘tiatr’ by his father, Juliao Gonsalves, adapted by George for the video film.

A bit of advice for budding artistes, especially singers from George is try to compose your own songs. If you depend on others for your lyrics, there might not be a future. A bit of voice training and knowledge of music, would also help in singing well.
George is a teacher for art at the Perpetual Succour High School, Navelim. We wish you all the best and a great future on stage. Keep singing!!

Workshop for Tiatr Artistes

Workshop for Tiatr Artistes

Tiatr Academy Goa has organized a workshop for writers of scripts of tiatr & lyrics of songs on Monday, 07th June 2010 from 10:00 am onwards at TAG’s Conference Hall, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panaji Goa.

The workshop will deal with the correct method of writing in Konkani in Roman script. It is a fact that in the present times, no tiatr artiste has taken formal education in Konkani in Roman script. This is the main reason why different script writers and lyricists write Konkani in Roman script in different ways.

TAG aims at bringing uniformity in the writing of Konkani in Roman script among the tiatr artistes by organizing series of workshops to that effect. The first workshop scheduled on 07th June will be conducted by Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG. Tiatr artistes interested in attending the workshop should confirm their participation by informing TAG by writing or through phone nos. 2230738/2230739 on of before 04th June 2010..

TAG requests the tiatr artistes to take benefit of the workshop so that the standard of writing Konkani in Roman Script is improved.

Tiatr Personality: JESUS ANTAO

Tiatr Personality: JESUS ANTAO

- By J P Pereira

For 28 years, Jesus Antao has made the audience laugh while performing on the Konkani stage. This comedian hailing from Chinchinim is the son of the late Antonio Piedade and Natalina Antao, the youngest of ten children.

Jesus Antao loved acting from an early age. He would regularly perform in the village dramas and made his debut in ‘Dusman’ a ‘tiatr’ written and directed by George Fernandes from Raia. Since then, the actor has performed in more than 150 dramas. Asked if he ever did a serious role, Jesus claimed to have tried. But, the more serious the role, the harder the audience laughed, he said. Finally, he decided to continue only as a comedian.

Jesus has acted for most of the directors from the Konkani stage. Prominent among the plays he has acted in are ‘Fullam Ani Kolle’, ‘Mhoje Unniecho To’, ‘Dolle Ugddun Poi’, ‘Somaz Oso Cholta’ by the late Rosario Rodrigues, ‘Mai’, ‘Paizonna’ by Pascoal Rodrigues, ‘He Chukik Bhogsonnem Assa?’ by Mario Menezes, ‘Tin Fogotteanchem Marann’ by Patrick Dourado and ‘Tuttlele Dhage’ by Roseferns. He also acted in the play ‘Succorina’ by Menino de Bandar which completed 200 shows. Although he never wrote and directed any plays, the comedian has produced, written and directed four comedy films. ‘Axirvad’, ‘Budhvont JakInas’, ‘Hansot Rav’ and ‘Fottkiro Agent’. Besides these, he has produced five audio albums like ‘Hanv MP’, ‘Repeat Repeat’ and others.

Jesus has great love and respect for the late Rosario Rodrigues, an excellent writer who would allot roles perfectly suited the respective actor.
He loves his profession and has been awarded many prizes in Goa as well as in the Gulf, for comedy. At the first tiatr festival organised by the Tiatr Academy, Goa he was nominated for best comedian.

Jesus is grateful to the audience for their support and vows to keep our mother tongue Konkani alive through the medium of the stage. At present he will be seen in a new production from Menino de Bandar. Jesus is married to Luiza, has a son Sheldon, who has acted in his video films and works for the Mormugao Port Trust.
We wish you all the best Jesus and hope you always keep the audience of Konkani dramas in good spirits, with your humour.

New lease of life for English theatre in Goa

New lease of life for English theatre in Goa

PANAJI: English theatre in Goa, in an almost comatose state, could be resuscitated this March with the staging of "Fires of darkness", a play written and directed by nuclear chemist Savio Sequeira.

Nairobi born, Dublin-based Sequeira of Goan ancestry is a nuclear chemist, now retired from the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, whose first love is films and music. "Nuclear chemistry paid the bills and gave me a job. Acting and directing does not always pay well," says Sequeira rather simply.

Nuclear chemistry and theatre direction are two diametrically opposite pursuits, but Sequeira's juggling of the two passions has brought him recognition in both. In Goa for a holiday, he penned "Fires of darkness", a play scheduled to be staged on March 3 and 4 at Panaji's Kala Academy.

Sequeira is not willing to part with details of the plot. All he says is that the play is a psychological thriller that has four characters who get "involved in a dark and murky scenario that affects their lives".

A frequent visitor to Goa, when he landed in the state in November, "Fires of darkness" did not form part of his holiday script. He actually began rehearsals for Neil Simon's "Star spangled girl", that to give it a desi twist was to be called the "Star spangled chokri". A little into the rehearsals he found that the actors just weren't prepared to enact the passionate kissing scene that is so crucial to the play and he had to drop the idea.

"That night I remained awake thinking and came up with the idea for this play," says Sequeira. It was already December when he wrote the play. Since then he has got Kala Academy involved and rehearsals for "Fires of darkness" are now chugging along "fantastically", as Sequeira says.

Says Kala Academy member secretary P R Phaldesai, "Sequeira worked with KA students in the past and directed a Hindi drama. It went well, people liked it, our students' involvement also was very good. He came forward with this proposal and we accepted it."

The Hindi play Sequeira directed two years back was called "Ek sapne ki maut", a Hindi version of Arthur Miller's "Death of a salesman". "Being from the colonial era, I speak only English, but I know 'Death of a salesman' so well that directing it in Hindi was not a difficult task," says Sequeira. That play too was staged in collaboration with Kala Academy.

Back in Ireland, Sequeira's science background and love for art led him to name his theatre group the "Da Vinci Theatre Company", after Leonardo da Vinci who was a scientist, artist, inventor. "We believe the time is ripe for the Renaissance man to return. I believe people are multifaceted and that society should encourage them," says Sequeira. In Dublin, Sequeira has directed quite a few Shakespeare plays including "Julius Ceasar", "The merchant of Venice", "Antony and Cleopatra", "As you like it", among others. Adhering to the script as written by Shakespeare, Sequeira gave the plays a modern setting. "Julius Ceasar" was set in an Iraq war-like situation, "Merchant of Venice" in Mussolini's Italy, and "As you like it" in the hippie era.

"I don't think Shakespeare would object to it. It is what makes him universal and timeless. The youth who have been taught Shakespeare in a mundane manner relate to his plays in these settings better," says Sequeira.

Sequeira has also directed a few films, including "Chains" that was commissioned by Gambia Television for the 1997 Roots Homecoming Festival. If "Fires of darkness" lights up the darkened English stage in Goa it will have succeeded in bringing English theatre a new lease of life.

"There is no English theatre in Goa. If somebody comes forward with such an idea, Kala Academy has to support it. This can continue in future also and it will give a new dimension to our theatre activity," says Phaldesai.

A ray of hope for Goan theatre aficionados.

When the curtains rise... by Dr. André Rafael Fernandes

FOREWORD

THE TIATR ACADEMY OF GOA is pleased to publish this book, When the curtains rise... Understanding Goa’s vibrant Konkani theatre, written by Dr. André Rafael Fernandes.

In fact, this was the thesis written by Dr.Fernandes for his doctorate. For the TAG, it is a matter of pride that Dr.Fernandes obtained his Ph.D. on a subject –the Goan tiatr – which is the most popular dramatic form of Goa.

The Goan tiatr has progressed in all aspects during the last 118 years. Year after year, its popularity too has reached greater heights. Yet, up to now, there has been no authentic documentation on the tiatr. This vacuum is being filled with the publication of this book.

Dr.Fernandes goes deep into the roots of the origin of the tiatr. He analyses the tiatr, its song and its music and he makes a sincere attempt t o depict it in an authentic manner. While doing this, he also attempts to widen the vision of the reader by providing additional information about the drama of that time enacted in some vii
of the other languages in Goa and Bombay. While dealing with the Kantaram, the songs that form an essential part of the tiatr, he also enlightens the reader with details of numerous Konkani folk songs and folk music.

When the curtain srise... is definitely an important work of doc-umentation on the tiatr, its song and it smusic. The TAG thanks Dr. André Rafael Fernandesf or his superb presentation of the history of the tiatr and hopes that this book will go along way in preserving the authentic history of the Goan tiatr.

Tomazinho Cardozo
President Tiatr Academy of Goa,Panjim,

A debt of gratitude

WITH A PROFOUND SENSE of gratitude,I acknowledge my indebtedness to Professor A.K. Joshi, former Head of the Department of English, Goa University. It was under his guidance that the thesis that went in to this book was begun and completed.

Without his scholarly supervision and perceptive criticism the work would surely not have gained in intensity.
Thanks are also due to the Goa University authorities —the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, and other officers and staff. To all of them, a thanks for their help and cooperation.

I also thank Prof. A.V.Afonso, Dean, Faculty of Languages.

To all my colleagues in the Department of English —Dr. Sripad Bhat, Dr.Kiran Budkuley, Dr. Anita Vashishta and Dr.Nina Caldeira —a genuine thank you for their support. I am grateful to the late Doutora Selma de Vieira Velho for her encouragement and assistance in documenting and translating original sources in Portuguese.

My gratitude goes to all the Goa University library staff for
their co-operation,help and assistance intracing out reference material that went into the making of this work. I wish to thank the staff members of the University Office, as well as the Faculty Office.

I am indebted to João Agostinho’s son, TonyBab,his wife Ana Maria Carolina Quadros, daughter Sharmila and family members, for all the generous help and material they have been able to extend to me.

My thanks also go to all the tiatrists who have beenvery co-operative in discussing the topic and giving me invaluable inputs. Among them specially are John Claro(with whom I had several enlightening conversations over the years),Tomazinho Cardozo, John Gomes Kokoy, Fr. Dominic Alvares, Remmie Colaço, Master Vaz, Antonio Piedade Moraes, Luciano Dias, C. da Silva, the late Felício Cardoso, Anil Kumar and Bai Fatima,Sharon and Wilmix Mazarello, Freddy Barboza, Fr. Antonio Pereira and all others whom I might have missed thanking inadvertently.

I am indebted to writer-publisher Frederick Noronha of Goa 1556. Though the Ph.D. examiners had recommended early publication of the thesis,I was unable to start the task for a long time. Frederick’s persistence and editorial prowess were indispensable in ensuring this publication in Goa itself. Without the help and en-thusiasm of Tomazinho Cardozo, and the Tiatr Academy of Goa -formed after the thesis was completed - as well as Premanand Lotlikar and the Dalgado Konkani Academy, this publication would have not seen the light of day so quickly and with the minimum amount of hassles; my thanks are due to all those associated with these organisations and who made this publication possible. I must also record my gratitude to Prof. Paulo Meloe Castro,(Professor of Portuguese, University of Leeds) for his close reading and pointing out several corrections of Portuguese and French words.

My thanks to Pundalik Narayan Naik, Jayanti, Maria, Sabita, Phadte, Seby and all the staff at the Goa Konkani Akademi. I also thank the staff at Konkani Bhasha Mandal at Margao, Kala Academy and All India Radio and the late Andrew Greno Viegas —who in his unfortunately short life became wellknown for painstakingly documenting the history of Konkani film.

My sincere thanks to Santan and Elaine, Fr. Eufemiano Miranda, Fr. Mousinho Ataíde,Perpetua,Tony,Guilly and Peter.

Finally,I thank very sincerely my wife,Nirmala, and my sons Krish and Joshua for their tremendous forbearance, their loving concern and cooperation. Without them, this work would have been impossible. I thank my brothers John Piety, Antonio and Joaquim and sisters Rita, Mereciana, Shanti and Annie for their encouragement.
I thank all others who have helped me in some way or the other, and seek their understanding for not being able to mention each one by name.

Above all, this work was made possibleby God’s grace and strength, and particularly His faithfulness and comforting spirit in the toughest of times.

Konkani Literature in Roman Script – A Brief History

Konkani Literature in Roman Script – A Brief History

To commemorate the 156th birth anniversary of Msgr Sebastiao Rudolfo Dalgado, the great son of Goa and a scholar of international repute, Dalgado Konkani Akademi (DKA) released the much awaited scholarly book, Konkani Literature in Roman Script – A Brief History written by eminent Konknni stalwart late Prof. Dr. Olivinho Gomes, at the hands of Vinayak Naik, editor of ‘Goa Today’ at a special function organized by DKA on 8th May, 2010 at Kala Academy’s Black Box, Panaji.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vinayak Naik said that the late Prof. Dr. Olivinho Gomes was the extraordinary Konknni person. The profoundity of his knowledge of every aspect o Konknni language was simply incomparable. He was the ultimate in the field of Konknni language and literature, Mr. Vinayak commented.
Mrs. Eslinda Gomes, wife of late Prof. Dr. Gomes was the special invitee.
Mr. Vinayak did not hesitated to take a potshot at the script controversy of Konknni. He said that he is entirely in agreement with all those who suggest that one script and one language could be the norm, but in some cases like that of Konknni making an exception is a must. “By that I mean, more than one script should be unhesitatingly permitted. Those who think that if Konknni is allowed to write in multiple scripts will affect the language are all wrong. Konknni will not be a unique case of one language and multiple scripts. Because there are already so many other languages written in two or three scripts, and they are flourishing. Therefore, the argument of the Devnagari script votaries that Konknni will make way for partition if Romi script is given recognition has absolutely no foundation.”
He further said that actually by refusing to give Romi script its rightful place under the sun, the Devnagari script adherer are unwittingly contributing eventually towards the doom of Konknni and that would be very tragic indeed.
A writer is a writer regardless in which script he writes. It does not make him inferior if he writes in Romi script. What is important is his thoughts and not the script, Mr. Vinayak said.
He further said that it pains to see that the advocates of Devnagari script talk about setting time frame to Romi script writers to change over to Devnagari script. This type of thinking is not very much different from the time bound resolution policy of Government of India for the dalits. If this view is accepted of Devnagari votaries then it will mean dalitising the Roman script of Konknni.
Mr. Vinayak Naik expressed the need for harmony between both the scripts of Konknni and also to officially accommodate the Roman script in Official Language Act.
President of Tiatr Academy and former Speaker of Legislative Assembly Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo spoke on the book and said that the book covers the literary works printed right from 1556, when the first printing press came to Goa.
The president of DKA, Mr. Premanand A. Lotlikar presided over the function. He said that the Konkani Literature in Roman Script – A Brief History written late Prof. Dr. Olivinho Gomes will be translated in Konknni and will be released next year on 8th May, 2011. He also announced that DKA’s another important publication, the history of Konknni Novels is underway.
DKA Secretary, Mr. Jose Salvador Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. Walter Menezes welcomed the gathering and Mr. Daniel F. de Souza compered the function.

What’s in a name? For M. Boyer it’s his identity

What’s in a name? For M. Boyer it’s his identity

If the famed Goan tiatrist M. Boyer, 74, (born Oct. 11, 1930) honored on Republic Day with a Padma Shri, were not humiliated in school by his principal, would he still have turned out to be the darling of the tiatr fans at home and abroad? And if Manuel Aguiar were not prohibited from participating in tiatr while in school, would the tiatr-loving world still have celebrated his talents on the Konkani stage?

I was thinking about the septuagenarian Manuel this week as another highest honor was bestowed on this son of the Goan soil in the sunset of his years, indeed in the twilight of his weakened voice and awareness.

What’s in a name, asked Shakespeare, another celebrated English playwright of the Renaissance, who wrote and acted in as many plays (over 30) as are attributed to
M. Boyer in the 20th century. In the play Romeo and Juliet, upon discovering that his love interest, Juliet, comes from the household of his inveterate enemy, Romeo declaims that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Indeed it would.

However, in the case of young Manuel Aguiar, it was a question of identity, a question that continues to gnaw at the consciousness of Goans, long inured to the Portuguese domination, even after 43 years of Liberation. It was a similar angst of identity that played upon the consciousness of a teenaged Manuel who simply wanted to sing his heart out and have some fun on the Konkani palcao back in the 40s and early 50s.

As a fellow Goan I salute M. Boyer’s achievements; as a former schoolmate of his in Margao, I’m saddened to recall his struggles with the principal who tried to block his tiatrist ambitions. I was a student of Instituto de Educacao Catolica (Catholic Educational Institute) from 1946-52 and the principal, Mr. Almeida from Assolna, would boast that our school was centro numero uno in Mocidade Portuguesa in the whole of Goa.

I wasn’t aware of Manuel Aguiar, a few years older than me, until 1949 when I heard him play the bugle before the start of the 40-minute morning drill for mocidade in the rectangle of the Holy Spirit Church. Well-built with a prominent nose and handsome, he sounded happy as he pressed his lips to the bugle that held the attention of boys and girls assembled in the red square in platoons of twelve.

The school was run from two buildings—campus would be too fancy a description. The elementary section stood on Agostinho Vincente Lourenco Road across from the left side of the church and the high school was at a jog in the Largo da Igreja and Abade Faria Road. Last year when I visited Goa I was shocked to see the two buildings still there, albeit shriveled up and dilapidated, mute specimens of dark memories of long ago.

Now Manuel came to school on his bicycle from the Fatorda side and at both the drills during morning and afternoon, his presence was conspicuous as if he loved Mocidade Portuguesa which, of course, was the grand passion of the principal. Mr. Almeida, a martinet of a disciplinarian, put his student body of about 100 or so through a rigorous workout of marcar passos in efforts to curry favors with the Portuguese administration that indulged him with funds.

Once, for a couple of weeks in 1949, Manuel attended one class in my Standard IV classroom in the elementary section. Being a monitor of my class, I took more than passing interest in this older student. However, a year later I was shocked to hear the principal reprimand Manuel at a student assembly. Mr. Almeida had attended a tiatr the previous evening where he saw his student singing a clown when he had expressly forbidden him to do so.

“Aum tuca funkiac xincoittam murre, kakut corun tujia familicher ani iskoll xinkpache suater tum tiatrant nachotta,” Almeida told him. (I am teaching you free of charge, having pity on your family, and instead of studying you are wasting your time in tiatr.) A pin drop silence fell upon the students. I craned my neck to see Manuel who was sitting on the last bench at the rear by the door. His head was down.

“And you could not even remember your song,” Almeida taunted him in English. “I could hear the prompter but you could not. And then I saw you again, peeking from behind the side curtain, like a fool. If you do that again, I will expel you forever from my school.”

At this point, Manuel bolted out from the room, causing whispers and moans in his wake. As if that was the only reason for calling the assembly, the lean, gray-haired principal ended the meeting with a short prayer. Shortly afterwards Manuel dropped out of our school.

At this time I too was getting interested in tiatr after singing a bikari song in a play staged by a talented playwright and song writer from Baga, Velim. Then a Konkani film Mogacho Aunddo by Jerry Braganza opened in Margao, a film that impressed me so much that I would write another version of it called Mog Jiklo in six pordhe with complete songs bearing on the theme.

Then one day in 1951 I saw handbills being distributed in the old market near our school. The flyer called attention to a tiatr titled Boglanti written by M. Boyer and carried a halftone photo of Manuel Aguiar. I gazed at the paper with surprise and joy and realized what Manuel had done. I had seen a movie starring Charles Boyer, the Hollywood comedian. The handsome photo proclaimed to me that he had arrived on the tiatr scene.

Until then Kid Boxer, Young Menezes, and Minguel Rod were the main attractions at the Damodar Vidya Hall in Comba, Margao with flyers featuring Kid-Young-Rod. Soon I began to see Boyer’s name among the hyphenated trios, Rod-Young-Boyer, Boyer-Mendes-Vaz (Anthony Mendes and Jacinto Vaz).

Curious to see and hear M. Boyer on stage, I went to a tiatr in Comba where Minguel Rod was featured among the other notables. I was able to get in free as if I was part of the stage crew and I hung around the perimeters of the backstage to see the stalwarts of the Goan tiatr at close range. M. Boyer came in at half-time and approached the business manager and promoter of the show.
“Vis rupia ek clownanc,” Boyer said. (Twenty rupees a song)
“Magir farir kortam tuca,” said the manager. (I’ll pay you later)
“Na, na, poile poixe dhi maca ani magir aum cantar kortam,” Boyer replied. (No, no, pay me first and then I’ll sing.)
From five feet away I watched this with amazement, surprised that Boyer would be so bold and business-like.
“Tumi he triatists kednai satisfeit zainai,” said the manager and gave Boyer 20 rupees. (You tiatrists are never satisfied).
Boyer sang his clown and departed immediately afterwards. This little backstage by-play has remained with me all these years, like an indelible first impression or the memory of first love-making.

In another year Boyer made his debut in Bombay at the popular Bhangwaddi theatre in Cavel, and truly launched his career as a tiatrist. I watched him here in late 1954 and noted for the first time his comic talent. Sometime in 1956 I ran into him again in Dhobitalao.
“Arre Herculano, kess ass tum?” Boyer said and shook my hand in Third Marine Lines.
“Aum boro assam.”
“Goeam guelolo? Almeidac meulolo?” he asked looking handsomer than ever with his moustache.
I was taken aback that he would ask about his old principal.
“I was in Goa last year for a month,” I said switching to English. “Now the border is closed as you know. You still remember Almeida?” I didn’t want to tell him that I too had left his school in 1952 out of frustration and went to New Era for my final SSC year.
“He was all right,” said Boyer showing no tinge of spite.
“Glad you’re doing well in tiatr. Almeida couldn’t keep you down.”
“Borem, kednaim yo mugue tiatrac, aum tuca pass ditolom,” he said. (Well, come to my tiatr sometime, I’ll give you a pass.)
As it happened, I never took him up on his offer.

Flash forward to January, 1966. I was working as a reporter for the Indian Express in Bombay. In the intervening years Boyer had become a huge success and popular with tiatr fans in Bombay and Goa. He had also appeared in a couple of Konkani movies.

At the intersection of Second Marine Lines and First Marine Lines near the Kit Kat restaurant stood a building where a Goan was running a gambling joint. Here on the first floor I often played rummy whenever I was on day call duty from 3-10 pm. One day I saw C. Alvares there, looking bored and sitting alone at the round table.

When I entered the room around 1:30 the owner promptly brought out two decks of cards and said, “You two can start playing; people will join you later.”

The handsome bearded face with green eyes that I had watched with delight in Margao with Mohana in 1953, looked at me and said, “You deal.”
“Paisa a point okay?” I asked while shuffling. He nodded.
We must have played about five hands when I noticed the time: 2:30 “Sorry to leave you, but I’ve got to go to work,” I said.
“Fine,” he said.
I left a rupee in the kitty box from the four I’d won and said, “I’ll be here tomorrow at the same time.” He merely shrugged as if he cared.

I had heard stories about his breakup with the Hindi film star Mohana, a Goan
from Porvorim, who’d brought sexy allure to the Konkani stage and oodles of money to the Romeo from Saligao.

When I came to play the next afternoon, he was sitting alone at the table. He looked up as soon as I entered and smiled. “Koho ai tum?”
“Boro assam,” I said.

The previous day we didn’t make any small talk other than about the play. He played cards out of boredom, I thought, not to win. He seemed knowledgeable and interested in rummy, though, from the manner he discarded the cards. He was 10 years older than me and at 40 and a bachelor, he strutted on the Konkani stage like a rooster exuding charm and sexual energy in duets with Remmie Colaco and later with Mohana. He also distinguished himself as a director and actor in tiatr and movies.

“M.Boyer and I went to the same school in Margao,” I said. “I am impressed by his success.”
He held my eyes for a long second as if he didn’t like my comment. After we finished the hand, I looked at my wristwatch.
“Where do you work?” he asked.
“At the Indian Express. I’m a reporter there.”
“Oh.” The green eyes glittered and another smile played about his mouth framed by a beard styled in the manner of Robert Taylor in the movie Quo Vadis.

I thought he was impressed with the idea of a hotshot tiatrist playing rummy with a newspaper reporter, and both Goans.
I brought up M. Boyer’s name again. This time he said, “Tho boro cantor.”
“And as an actor?”
C. Alvares shrugged his shoulders as if to say he can’t hold a candle to me.

Shortly afterwards, while riding the red BEST bus to Sassoon Docks, I pondered over that comment, which today I consider a fitting tribute to M. Boyer by a fellow tiatrist, himself a charming celebrity of his time.

As published in Goan Observer when M.Boyer received the Padma Shree Award
at the hands of Indian President Abdul Kalam.

[Grateful thanks to Mr. Ben Antao (Canada) for forwarding the article to gaspar almeida, www.goa-world.com].

DKA activities

DALGADO KONKNNI AKADEMI

The name

Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) was established in 1988. This Akademi is named
after Mgr. Sebastião Dalgado, for his various contributions to enrich Konkani
Language. Mgr. Sebastião Dalgado was a scholar of Konkani as well as many
other languages. Dalgado was born in Assagão, a village in Bardez, Goa on May
8, 1855. Mgr. Dalgado devoted himself to the study of Konkani in scientific
and systematic manner. He was the first person in Goa to use Devanagari
script for Konkani and to print the first Konkani book in it. He compiled two
dictionaries Konkani-Portuguese and Portuguese-Konkani; Konkani was then
written as well as spoken in various dialects. Mgr. Dalgado found his own
Bardexi dialect the most suitable to standardize Konkani. Mgr. Dalgado's aim
was to show that Konkani was a full-fledged independent language.

Mgr. Dalgado's contribution to the development of Konkani language is immense.
He rightfully deserved a prominent place but in vain. In order to keep the
name, the works and sacrifices of Mgr. Dalgado alive for the present and
future generations, the Akademi was named after this great son of Goa.

The first phase:

For the first four years DKA was very active. Fr. Freddy J. da Costa was the
President. Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo was the secretary and Mr. Prabhakar Tendulkar
the treasurer. During this period, DKA published 'Konkani Orthography in Roman
Script' with the intention of bringing about a desirable unity among the
writers, so that the writers could understand the principles and rules of
writing Konkani in Roman script. A number of programmes were conducted in
various parts of Goa to popularise Roman script and Konkani written in it.
Subsequently due to various reasons DKA slowed down and remained stand still.

The second phase:

It was observed that the writers of Konkani in Roman script were totally
neglected as they were not getting any financial backing from any quarters to
carry on their activities. In fact, after the passing of Goa Official Language
Act, the Government and the institutions working for the cause of Konkani in
Goa, supported Konkani in Devnagiri script only. Publications of books in
Roman script suffered. Institution like Kala Akademi stopped giving awards for
Konknani Books in Roman script.

In order to support and to give boost to the creativity of Konkani writers in
Roman script, some well wishers of Konkani in Roman script came together and
decided to revive Dalgado Konknni Akademi. Presently Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo is
the President, Mr. Jose Salvador Fernandes and Mr. Prabhakar Tendulkar are
the secretary and treasurer respectively. Besides there are other 10
prominent persons as members of the Executive Board. Various sub-committees
have been formed to popularise the activities of the Akademi. Literary
Committee is headed by Fr. Peter Raposo, Editor of Vavraddeancho Ixtt, while
Wilson Mazarello, popular stage artiste, is the chairman of Cultural
Committee. Dr. Olivinho Gomes, former Head of Konkani Department of Goa
University, is the Chairman of the Committee to frame the Constitution of the
Akademi, while Dr.Pratap Naik, Director of Thomas Sthepens Konknni Kendr will
head the Awards Committee. The present membership of the Akademi is over 200.

Aims and Objectives:

The present Executive Board has set a few aims and objectives and activities
to strengthen Konkani in Roman script.

The first and foremost objective of DKA is to promote Konkani language in
Roman script, which is neglected, side tracked and given step motherly
treatment. Konkani written in Roman script goes back to 1560. Without its
Roman script history, Konkani would not have got the recognition by Sahitya
Akademi, New Delhi in 1975. It has the rich cultural heritage and it has
become integral and unavoidable part of Goan culture, specifically of
Christians. The vast majority of Goan Christians read Konkani written in
Roman script. Hence it has to be preserved fostered and developed.

DKA will make all efforts to provide support, financial and otherwise, for
writers of Konkani in Roman script. It will work untiringly to obtain for them
their just and lawful demands, dues and rights. DKA will recognize those
institutions, which are working for the promotion and development of Konkani
Language, literature and culture in Roman script. It will initiate various
activities in literary, cultural and social field through all the modern means
of social communication.

It will provide financial assistance, and scholarships to writers, dramatists,
talented important people, scholars and students to carry out research and
other undertakings in the field of Konkani. Holding and organizing seminars,
conferences, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, competitions of different
types; undertaking and editing Konkani folk songs, music, folk literature,
stage performances and other expressions of Konkani culture; Library and
documentation centre facilities to the students, writers, teachers, producers
and actors/actresses of Konkani; collecting and preserving Konkani documents,
records, books and objects scattered with individuals and families which are
related to the cultural and literary development of Konkani are other
objectives.

The Akademi will focus on promoting, assisting, and undertaking publications
of children's literature in Konkani along with providing books or magazines in
Konkani language to the libraries and institutions.

It is a fact that many Christians in Goa are going away from Konkani language.
They do not send their children to Konkani schools. They hesitate to talk in
Konkani language in their daily life. In other words they are in the process
of loosing their Goan identity. DKA will make untiring efforts to preserve our
identity through Konkani language irrespective of the scripts in which it is
written.

Action Plan for 2004 -2005:

DKA has set an Action Plan for the Academic year 2004-2005.

1. To register DKA under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860.

2. For giving publicity to DKA, it has planned to hold a seminar cum
cultural programme in Konkani at Margão in December, 2004.

3. Publication of 10 Konkani books in Roman script that will include novels,
short stories, poetry, translation, tiatr, khell tiatr, and essays. These
books will be released in December, 2004.

4. Publication of its annual magazine " PORMOLL" during Christmas.

5. DKA plans to enroll 2000 people as members for the current academic year.

6. DKA intends to finance partly the Konkani writers in Roman script to
publish their first book in Roman script.

7. Plans in collaborating with various other institutions who work for Konkani
in Roman script and work hand in hand.

8. It will celebrate Dalgado Jayanti on 8th May 2005 to commemorate 150 years
of Dalgado's Birth on a large scale. On that day a senior Konkani writer in
Roman script will be honoured with "Dalgado Konknni Puroskar". Dalgado Jayanti
Celebrations will continue throughout the year ending in May 2006.

9. To launch DKA website.

10. To start fund raising campaign to promote Konkani in Roman script.

11. To launch the village-to-village programme " Speak Konkani, save
Konkani". Through this venture we hope to unite Goans, particularly
Christians, in order to strengthen their roots of Goan identity.

Our aims and objectives in reviving Dalgado Konknni Akademi are very clear. It
is our duty to support writers of Konkani in Roman script and to provide
qualitative literature to thousands of readers of Konkani in Roman script. It
is also our paramount responsibility to see that our Christian community loves
their mother tongue Konkani and is proud of its Goan identity.

We request all like minded Goans to support Dalgado Konknni Akademi in its
mission. We are open for any suggestions if they are going to be beneficial
for writers and readers of Konkani in Roman Script in particular and Goans in
general.
