Unforgettable H Britton

Unforgettable H Britton

I was shocked to learn about the demise of the evergreen iconic Konkani stage artist Hermegildo Camilo, popularly known as H Britton.

In earlier times, tiatr was not as popular as it is today. In the year 1969, Britton had walked into Sesa Goa mines at Sirsaim for an interview. On seeing my familiar face, he asked me where food was available. At that time, as there was no canteen at Sesa Goa mines, I took him to the private house where I was myself eating. Thereafter, our friendship grew.

He will be long remembered by tiatr lovers as a towering personality who mesmerised audiences with his talent wherever he performed. His passing away is a great loss for Goan tiatr lovers as well as to the Konkani stage and especially to his birthplace, Britona village.

TWO KONKANI
G E M S R E L E A S E D

By Daniel F De Souza

FAUSTO V DA Costa needs no formal introduction to Goans. The same applies to his music company “Dinfa Productions” which, till now, has given some memorable hit audio CDs and cassettes to Konkani music lovers. The most recent gems that have been produced by Dinfa Productions are Goenchim Mannkam Motiam a re-mix of old Konkani hits, and hit songs of the late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa’s award-winning play Niz Mog.

Goenchim Mannkam Motiam is a remix CD of hits of renowned composers and singers of yesteryear. Selected hits of Minguel Rod, Kid Boxer, Young Menezes, M. Boyer, Remmie Colaco, C. Alvares, H. Briton, Alfred Rose, Frank Fernand, Shailendra Singh, Bhupendra, Amit Kumar and Antonette are included in the CD.

Among the several unforgettable hits, one gets to listen to the original version of hits such as Ghovachem Ghor by C. Alvares and Antonette, Girl Friend by H. Briton, Mhaka Poun Hanstai by Alfred and Rita Rose. The CD begins with an old hit solo of M. Boyer, Bhurguim Vo Baulim, rendered by Michael M. and Aitar Kela a fast rap song of Young Menezes sung by Philip T follows. Ghovachem Ghor, in the original voice of the King of Duets late C. Alvares and Antonette, is a delight. Melodious Mumbai-based singer Nephie Rod belts out Amit Kumar’s Noman Tuka Goa.

Philip T and Michael M. combine well to bring you ‘Kid-Young-Rod’ a hit combination of the early sixties. M. Kumar follows next with a romantic solo ‘Kallzachem Sukh’ which was originally sung by Shailendra Singh. H. Briton’s ‘Pandu Lampianv’ is rendered by Michael M. Remmie Colaco’s all time hit song “Ghorachem Sukh” is sung by Francis, but the singer fails to come anywhere close to veteran singer Remmie Colaco either in style or depth. ‘Lawrie Io’ set to the pop beat is rendered well by Anthony San and Jennifer, Anthony San follows later with yet another hit ‘Nixeani Fulam’ originally of Bhupender. It must be said to the credit of the singer Anthony San that in both the above songs he sings far better than the original version. His melodious voice makes pleasant listening.

‘Sopnantle Tiatr’ is a well composed song sung by Peter de Benaulim, this is followed by another duet ‘Sobhit Amchem Goem’ by Jennifer and Allan. Veteran singer Antonette Mendes adds flavour to the CD by her splendid voice singing ‘Mog’, a touching Mando. “Mhaka Poun Hanstai” is yet another original gem coming from the melody king, late Alfred Rose and his wife Rita. “Bobor” a comedy hit song of late Minguel Rod is the last track on the CD sung by Michael M.

This Re-mix version CD has music composed by some great music composers in the likes of Johny Rodrigues, Frank Fernand, Joe Perry, Luis Martins, Alfred Rose, Cruz Jazzwala, and Manuel Alphonso. The CD priced at Rs.200/- comes with a free sing-along lyrics booklet. ‘Goenchim Mannkam Motiam’ with music by Tony Dias, will certainly add variety to your Konkani Music collection. Go ahead pick your copy from the nearest dealer. ‘Niz Mog’ the other CD released by Dinfa Productions contains all the hit songs from Fr. Freddy J. Costa’s tiatr with the same name, which was released in 1985. The CD contains all the hits songs sung by the original artists from the play. All the songs from the tiatr are composed by late Fr. Freddy J. Costa and have rich lyrics with a true Goan flavour. Set to some really soulful music by Fr. Tony Cotta, it is makes some pleasant listening. ‘Niz Mog’, Mogan Hanv Poddon’ ‘Mogan Zaleam Pixim’ and ‘Magtam Upkar’ are some memorable solos rendered by Laura with her crystal clear voice. Melodious voiced singer Young Chico sings ‘Koxtt Dukh Kaddun’ and ‘Maim Ugddas Tuzo’. Young Chico combines once again with Laura to sing a duet ‘Mogan Zaleam Pixim’. He follows once again with Agnela to sing a duet ‘Kalliz Mhojem Kadd’. ‘Mog Tuzo re Cliff’ is another solo rendered by Agnela. All the ten songs are directly related to the main plot of ‘Niz Mog’ and Fr. Freddy Costa himself narrates the story in between the songs.

The CD contains five bonus tracks ‘Doth Dennem” by Laura and Agnela, ‘Sangati’ by Young Chico, ‘Doxea’ By Laura, ‘Madar Teresa’ by Young Chico and ‘Konknni Bhas’ by Laura. All these five tracks have some really meaningful lyrics. Since these songs were original recorded in the mid-eighties, Young Chico is at the peak of his singing career. His singing is exceptionally good and so are the other female voices too. The music score is written by Fr. Tony Cotta, who also plays the Saxaphone. He is accompanied by Agnelo Dias on the trumpet and the Syndicate Band provides the music. ‘Niz Mog’ was earlier released in the eighties by Dinfa Production on audio cassettes, whereas the same is now released on a CD format. At a time when good Konkani songs with meaningful lyrics and ethnic goan music are scarce to come by, “Niz Mog” provides the much needed relief. The CD is moderately priced at Rs. 150 and is available at all leading music stores in Goa , Mumbai and in the Gulf . ‘Niz Mog’ is certainly a priceless CD of quality songs and original goan music. Make sure you add the same to your ‘must buy’ list.

New Release in August: In the meantime Ace comedian John D’ Silva joins the bandwagon of tiatrists with his latest release ‘UGDDAS” scheduled for release from 1 st August 2004 in all the main cities of Goa. The premier show will be held in Mapusa. Departing from his usual format of non-stop shows, ‘UGDDAS’ is a full fledged tiatr. Seems like John has followed in the footsteps of Roseferns and Prince Jacob in switching over to the tiatr format for a change during the off-season slot. Speaking to John D’Silva I gathered that this is not his first step in producing a tiatr. He had earlier staged his first tiatr entitled “Chukele Roste” some years back. When asked why he preferred to produce a tiatr, John replied “Tiatrs have made a phenomenal comeback and they are very popular in recent times, hence I decided to try something different.” The show boasts of a varied cast with some big names from the Konkani stage. The writer promises the tiatr is an intriguing story with many twists. He has brought together four other top comedians of the Konkani stage apart from himself to provide the comic relief. So comedian Agostinho, Selvy, Luis Bachchan and Joanna will combine with John to produce side-splitting comedy states the writer/director. Some of the topmost and established singers of the Konkani stage are also lined up to strengthen the singing department. I wish John D’Silva all the very best in his new venture.

H. Britton Will Live On Forever

H. Britton Will Live On Forever
●Tomazinho Cardozo

Konkani Tiatr stage is passing through a critical phase. Few months back a stalwart of Konkani stage M. Boyer and another tiatr personality, Lucas Fernandes, bid adieu to all tiatr lovers. Within a very short span of time, yet another multi-talented personality of the tiatr stage, H. Britton passed away on 24th September 2009. H. Britton’s contribution to Konkani stage is not only immense but unique too. I consider his contribution unique because his acting as a female character kept the Konkani tiatr stage alive when female artistes were reluctant to act on the Tiatr stage.

H. Britton’s real name was Hermegildo Camilo. In fact I saw him on the Tiatr stage during the yearly tiatr staged by the villagers of Britona on the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of Penha de France, in the late 1960s. If I am not mistaken, young, handsome and energetic Hermegildo had come down from Bombay to Goa for the village feast. This was clear from the announcement that had been made informing the tiatr audience that Hermegildo would sing two songs. Over 600 audience plus was eager to listen and see Hermegildo in action on the stage. Everyone in the audience was very happy. Continuous whistling by the boys from behind filled the atmosphere. I was surprised at the behaviour of the audience after Hermegildo’s name was announced. I realized that Hermegildo was very popular among the villagers. I was also informed that Hermegildo was acting in the tiatr after a gap of four years. Naturally people were anxious to see the acting of their most talented young artiste from the village at that time.

At last Hermegildo came on the stage with his inimitable style and rendered a song which sent the whole audience into pills of laughter. He was called again and again by the audience. But the best in Hermegildo was yet to come. The second song rendered by Hermegildo was excellent. He dressed as a girl and rendered the song in his unique style. His attire, his body movements, his actions and facial expressions mesmerized the audience. He was a perfect young lady criticizing the boys in her song. Although he criticized boys in that song, the boys in the audience could not resist in whistling more and more to bring him back on the stage again and again. He was the darling of the villagers of Britona at that time and hence they
called him Hermegildo and not H Briton although he had become a very prominent artiste in that name on the tiatr stage in Bombay at that time.

H. Britton’s singing, dancing and acting as a female character has no parallel in the history of Tiatr. He dominated the Tiatr stage as a female artiste for a long time although he had to go abroad in between for better prospects. After returning back he again embraced his first love – the tiatr. Besides being a very good singer and actor, he was a superb lyricist too. His composition was not only rich in content but
also full of wit and humour. He must have composed over 700 songs besides singing thousands of songs with other tiatr artistes including M. Boyer, Jacinto Vaz, and others.

He wrote and directed full length tiatrs too. His first tiatr was “Ekvottachem Foll” which was a hit. Some of his popular tiatrs which have won the hearts of the people were: “Custom Officer”, “Jivit Kuwaitchem”, “Bebdo Put”, “Bunhad Naslolem Ghor”, etc. However, as a singer, he has captured the hearts of the people. He has many albums to his credit. His songs namely ‘’Bandra Fest’ and ‘Pandu Lapiao’ has become a part and parcel of our cultural heritage.

As a female artiste of the tiatr stage he was responsible to keep the flag of Konkani Tiatr flying high when there was scarcity of girls to act in Tiatrs. He filled that vacuum then and saw that Tiatr not only lives but lives as a vibrant dramatic form of Goa.

Antonette Mendes, a legend of Konkani stage

Antonette, a legend of Konkani stage
By J P Pereira

The Konkani stage has witnessed Antonette Mendes, as an actress, a singer and a director as well. For more than three decades, this veteran has been regaling the ‘tiatr’ audience and lovers of Konkani songs, with her unique style of acting and melodious voice.

Antonette made her debut on the Konkani stage in ‘Aum To Tarvotti’, a play written and presented by her father, A K D’Souza. She sang a solo and wanted to continue singing. However, her father insisted that she also should try her acting and became one of the most sought after actress in those days. Roles were offered in dramas by the late C Alvares, Alfred Rose, J P Souzalin, and Kid Boxer. She continued acting for M Boyer, Prem Kumar, Master Vaz and many others. Later, she wrote and directed her own ‘tiatr’, ‘Abgath’, ‘Tum Saiba Konn’ and ‘Khoinchem Mhojem Ghor’, along with her husband, late Romeo Mendes.

Antonette has acted in two of the best Konkani films produced till date. Her appearance in ‘Amchem Noxib’, a pretty 16 year old opposite a great comedian, the late Anthony Mendes, is remembered till today. There she was, prancing and singing ‘Tum nasloi punn tuka sweaterkori’. In ‘Nirmonn’, her rendition of the song ‘Claudia’ made it one of the greatest hits of Konkani music. There were others too. ‘Pitti Pitti Mog’, ‘Pixem’, ‘Bebdem’, ‘Norsichem Fugasanv’ and those M Boyer’s hits, ‘Dothi Magon’ and ‘Zati’. Some recorded on the HMV label, others produced by private companies. Her own releases, include ‘Jivit Ek Sopon’, ‘Vailankanni’ and ‘Raiturchi Imaj’, on audio cassette.

A comedy role in Jagdish Narulla’s Hindi film, ‘Mohabbat Zindagi Hai’ and a major role in Cyrus Mistry’s English play ‘The Legacy of Rage’, where she plays a subtly manipulative woman, are the other highlights of her career. The state government felicitate her, for her qualitative contribution to Goan culture.

Antonette considers herself lucky to have succeeded in her career, in those days when women were relegated to the kitchen. She is grateful to her family, for all the support and encouragement she received from them. She advises new comers to work hard, to achieve one’s goals, as there are no short cuts to success. Young script writers should bring about a change in society, concentrate on family ties, and make society aware of the consequences of family break-ups.

During her career spanning more than 30 years, Antonette has toured east Africa, England and the Gulf countries. She still sings and acts, made a come back in her son in law’s Jose Rod’s comedy hit ‘Mauli’ and recently played a major role in the revival of M Boyer’s ‘Ekuch Rosto’.

Demise of singer, Tony Carr

Notes from AIR FM Rainbow's tribute (by Tina Costa) to Tony
Carr, who passed away recently. The tribute was broadcast on
September 15, 2009 (9 to 9.30 pm). Feedback to Tina Costa at
tinacosta@rediffmail.com

* * *

Many of you must be aware of the demise of singer, Tony Carr
of 'Cu Cu Ru Cu' fame. Tonight, I dedicate this half hour of
this airtime in his honor. He may not have many songs to his
credit, but whatever few songs he has sung, have remain
etched in our memories all these years.

Tony Carr was born on 27th October 1945. Though
born in Goa, most of his life was spent in Mumbai.
Chris Perry, noted for rendering music scores to
many songs and noted for finding new talent, found
this talent in Tony Carr and gave him an
opportunity to sing his songs. Tony rendered the
song 'Cu Cu Ru Cu' so beautifully, so also the
other songs, 'Kalliz Boong Bang Zata', 'Madancho
Soro' and 'Tum ani Aum' with Usha Uthup.

For almost 28 years while in Kuwait, he performed in shows
along with the Mendes Brothers. He touched many hearts with
his voice during such performances.

We had the opportunity of having the following personalities
on air -- former Goa Speaker, dramatist, writer, singer
Tomazinho Cardozo who spoke highly about Tony Carr, about how
he made his name in this music field with just a few songs to
his credit.

Cardozo said how important it is to recognize such talent of
yesteryears so that they are not lost in oblivion amongst the
present generation. Singer Anthony San, saddened by Tony
Carr's demise, was all in praise of this singer. He said
that 'Cu Cu Ru Cu' was sung so beautifully by Tony Carr that
when he tried to sing this very same song, he was unable to
sing it as beautifully as Tony did.

All the way from Mumbai, we got a chance to chat with
dramatist, singer, producer and director, Tony Martins, who
said that this was a big loss and that he will always
remember the lovely songs that he left behind, especially
'Kalliz Boong Bang Zata'.

In 1978, Tony Carr accompanied Chris Perry on his
music tours to Bahrain and Kuwait and enthralled
the audiences with his songs. His last few years
were spent in Mumbai. During those years, he never
missed any tiatr, more so to keep in touch with the
tiatrists. Tony Carr always kept touch with his
friend, dramatist and comedian, Titta Pretto. What
shocked me to hear from Titta is that since the
last two years, Tony Carr had spent a lonely life
and wasn't keeping good health too.

On 13th September 2009, we saw the end of this 'Cu Cu Ru Cu'
voice. He proved that he didn't need many songs to earn him
the name that he earned. He will be missed by many. May his
soul rest in peace.

H.Britton's funeral - "Randlelem sorta punn kelelem urta."

There is a Konkani proverb: "Randlelem sorta punn kelelem urta."
(Cooked food gets over but the deeds remain.)

We saw the effects of this proverb at H. Britton's (HB) funeral. The crowd that attended his funeral included not only his near and dear ones but also his audience who supported him throughout his career.

They gathered at his residence and at the Church to express their gratitude to the man who entertained us all with his meaningful songs, tiatros, Mandde, etc. and to bid him a final adieu; they came to repay him for the good deeds that he did in his lifetime.

Usually, funerals are a sad occasion where one comes across a lot of crying, wailing and sad faces. But at H. Britton's funeral, it was a different feeling and that difference was created by the brass band, which kept on playing H. Britton's famous songs non-stop at his home, during the procession and at the Church before and after the service.

I, among many, was sad at H. Britton's passing. Every time Cota's band played one of his songs, I was transported back to that time in HB's career, imagining HB singing on the stage - flashbacks of his performances rolled right before my eyes. Not only that, every time a song was played, I found myself quietly humming the tune along with the band; I am sure many others did the same.

HB worked and lived for us Goans in Goa and abroad. He had one thing in his mind - to entertain the public and he did just that until last year. An entertainer right to the end, even in death, he entertained all at his funeral through tunes of his songs!

We miss you H. Britton! You will always remain in our hearts! May God bless your soul!

KONKANI CD "DINARACHO VALOR"

KONKANI CD "DINARACHO VALOR"

At the first Mangalorean Konkani tiatr in Kuwait titled "Kuwait Soddun Vetana" by Konkan Kala Samiti which Rosary Ferns had earlier presented as writer-director to the Goan audience, mentioned that he released his 16th Konkani Album "DINARACHO VALLOR" on Friday (25th Sept. 2009) morning. He was felicitated during the event, and sang the CD's title song to a packed audience at the AIS Auditiorium, Hawalli.

We got hold of the CD at the venue which has music by Maestro Josinho and is produced by Music House - Mapusa.

Lawry Travasso, Naphie Rod, Jessie Dias, C.D'Silva, Roshan, Antonette de Calangute, Bonny, Babli, and Bab Agnel feature with their songs - solos, duets and even a quartet, with all lyrics (except for one song), composed by Rosary Ferns.

Among Rosary Ferns' Konkani audio albums, "Matarponn", "Dinar", "Pirachit" and "Khast Devachi" stands out, he has also produced a Konkani VCD.

"Tumcam Lagon Jhiealom", "Ami Chuklim" and "Sukh Khuim Assa?" are some of the tiatrs, penned and directed by him which were received. Interestingly, his tiatrs has been presented under different banners like Colva United Centre, United Goans Centre, and Konkani Heritage Kuwait.

KGTS MEGA MUSICAL-VISITING ARTISTES SHARE LIMELIGHT WITH LOCAL GOAN TALENT.

KGTS MEGA MUSICAL-VISITING ARTISTES SHARE LIMELIGHT WITH LOCAL GOAN TALENT.

It was expressively germane that Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha(KGTS), presented their mega musical event on Friday, September 18, 2009, titled “Tiatristponn Devachem Dennem”, as a tribute to the doyen of the Konkani stage, the late Padmashree, M.Boyer.

The newly crowned, Global Konkani Best Male Singer, Lawry Travasso, captivated the hearts of the tiatr ‘mogis’ with his two sensational solos and two duets, one with Ms.Gracy Moraes and the other with Ms.Querobina Carvalho and also a quartet, with Peter-Roshan and comedian Selvy.

Peter-Roshan also delighted with their two excellent duets, one on the ‘rights of gays’ and the second, a spoof on “Goenche Montris” for which the duo was profusely applauded and repetitively called on the stage. The comedy interludes by visiting artistes, Agostinho and Selvy were well propped up by Kuwait’s artistes namely, Querobina, Nelson and, Caji de Benaulim.

Further, a duet by hitman Sylvester Vaz and Irene Vaz had a very reflective significance and, even Sylvester’s only other solo added sparkle to the musical evening.

Other solo renditions by Albert Cabral, Anthony Carr, Micky, Milagres, Kathy de Navelim, Ms.Roshan (Goenkar Nouro), Querobina Carvalho, Selvy, Michael D’Silva were well acclaimed, as evidenced, by the audience response.

Thespian Mario de Majorda, along with Cajetan de Sanvordem and Michael D’Silva rendered two beautiful trios, most remarkable being the one, that highlighted, the latent imperviousness, analogically, of Kuwait’s evergreen Dinar, to some western currencies, as boasted by a new breed of dissolute seamen.

The thematic significance of ‘Tiatristponn Devachem Dennem” was well reflected in the opening scene with Ms.Clara, Ms.Irene, Ms.Gracy, Ms.Querobina, Cajetan, Sylvester, Nelson, Michael, Laurie M. Shahu, Menino, Katty, Joseph, Caji, Jose Anthony, Martin, Manuel, Mario and Francis de Verna and, ending the musical show, with impeccable extrapolation of the theme by the concerned artistes, Ms.Gracy, Ms.Clara, Manuel, Cajetan, Mario, and Joseph.

And, hats off to, Katty, Joseph and Braz for their heart rending trio in fond tribute to the late, Padamashree, M.Boyer.

Earlier, KGTS organized on the stage, the traditional ceremony of lighting the lamp at the hands of a few honored guests, in memory of the legendary, Padamashree, the late M.Boyer.

Ramos Aguiar, son of the late M.Boyer who graced the occasion as a special guest, was presented with a distinctive memorabilia. KGTS were also gracious to honor Michael D’Silva who has been the shinning star of Konkani stage in Kuwait, for over a decade.

Maestro Shahu from Kuwait and, the ace trumpeter Anthony de Velim from Goa, provided scintillating musical score.

A colorful Souvenir was released to mark the mega musical presentation.

PRESS NOTE

ROMI LIPI ACTION FRONT condoles death of “H.Britton“

The Romi Lipi Action Front, is saddened by the sudden death of Shri. H.Britton, a talented Konkani Tiatrist, hailing from Brittona, Bardez, Goa.
Shri H.Britton, started his professional singing career, in Mumbai, somewhere around 1960, and shot into fame around 1970.
Shri H, Britton had a unique style of singing and a very pleasant voice. His thousands of fans liked to see him dress as a girl and sing songs portraying a modern girl. This H.Britton did to perfection.
Whenever, H.Britton sang more than one song in a tiatr, one of the songs would inevitably be H. Britton dressed as a girl.
The song was bound to have an “encore” from the audiences.
The lyrics of his compositions and the way H. Britton carried himself, always titillated the audiences.
Among the many songs composed and sung by H,Britton, some have become immortal.
Among the immortalized ones are, Bandra Festak, Marialena, Kazarachya Mattvan. Etc.
H.Britton also wrote, directed and produced several Konkani Tiatros which ran to packed-houses, wherever staged.
As a Tiatrist, H.Britton traveled to many parts of the world, including U.K and the Middle East.
Shri. H. Britton’s entire family is into Konkani Tiatrs.
They may not be into it professionally, but as Tiatrists, yes they are.
H. Britton wrote and read Konkani only in the Roman Script and he always believed that the real future of Konkani lies, in it being promoted in the Roman Script.
In the sudden death of Shri H.Britton, the “Romi Lipi Action Front” has lost a friend, an active supporter.
We pray for his soul and may God grant sufficient courage to his family to bear the loss.

H Britton laid to rest
HERALD CORRESPONDENT/PORVORIM, SEPT 27, 2009

The mortal remains of Hermegildo Camilo, popularly known as H Britton, was laid to rest at Britona Cemetery on Sunday.
Hundreds of people thronged Britton’s residence to pay their last respect to the departed soul, who passed away on Thursday after a brief illness.
Among politicians who paid last respect to H Britton were Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar and Goa State Planning Board Vice Chairman Dr Wilfred D’Souza.
Besides, several tiatr personalities came in large number to pay a tearful farewell to H Britton. Prominent among them were Tiatr Academy President Tomazinho Cardozo, Prince Jacob, Cyriaco Dias, Sabina Alvares, Adv Mike Mehta, Anil Kumar, Bond Braganza, Jessy, Diana, Sabina Alvares, Mario Menezes, Osvi Viegas, Patrick Dourado, Xavier Paclo, Xavier Mascarenhas, C D’Silva, Bab Andrew, Boneventur D’Petro, Maestro Agnel and Anceto Lawrenco.
Speaking to Herald, Tomazinho Cardozo said that he knew H Britton for the last 40 years. “H Britton was a great artiste who had won hearts of the masses. He used to play female roles to perfection. His contribution to tiatr will be remembered by the tiatrists forever,” said Cardozo.
Prince Jacob stated that the State has lost one of the talented artistes. “He was a good singer, who mesmerized the audience by his voice. He made a significant contribution to the development of Konkani tiatr,” said Jacob.
Cyriaco Dias said that H Britton was a good lyricist, singer and a good director too. “He had acted with me in 1960-61 and women used to admire H Britton very much for the female roles he used to portray on the stage. He was a good humorist,” added Dias.
Adv Mike Mehta described H Britton as a “pillar of Tiatr industry”. “He used the select subjects for his songs, which were of great interest to the general public. Hence his songs became very popular,” said Adv Mehta.
“In his death, tiatr lovers have lost a great stage artiste and the void that has been created cannot be filled,” said Adv Mehta.

TIATRO " ZAIAT ZAGE " Written and directed by Prince Jacob

(Review with photos by Daniel F. D'Souza - Vasco, Goa.)

ZAIAT ZAGE - a laugh-a-minute riot on stage

Prince Jacob the Showman of the Konkani stage has done it once again. Known for his penchant for experimenting with progressive and innovative ideas on stage, his latest offering ‘Zaiat Zage’ (Wake Up) is drawing tiatr lovers by the throes to the theatres.

On 8th August two successive shows at the Kala Academy auditorium in the capital city were packed to capacity with people returning back home for want of tickets.‘Zaiat Zage’ as a matter of fact is the talk of town for its sheer style of presentation and the heavy dose of infectious comedy unleashed by the indefatigable comedian Humberto. Humberto makes his intentions very clear from the very fist scene that he is going to unleash unlimited comedy for the next three hours. In fact he boldly shoulders the comedy department single handedly.

Prince Jacob has weaved an interesting tale taking into account the day to day happenings and events that take place in our Goan villages and how it influences the very future of our land and its people. Using wooden props he has cleverly depicted five houses on stage. While four are projected with side elevation, one has a frontal view. The scenario depicts a typical Ward in any Goan village. The gist of the story revolves round these five middle-class families and the way they react to situations on a day to day basis in a typical middleclass fashion.

There is Jacinto and Simon two brothers who cannot see eye to eye and live separately in a house divided. Simon is young and energetic, always obsessed with his body fitness and weights. Then there is Joe (Joe Rose) a funny character wearing ‘cheddis’ with sleeveless banians and lots of gold chains living with his young daughter Sonia who enjoys life at the cost of his wife who is working in the Gulf. No non-sense Maria Dias (Annie Quadros) the dominating village panch and her hand packed husband Salu (Humbert) live next door to Joe. On the other end are a traditional Hindu couple Jairam (Ignatius de Xelvon) and his wife Sakhu ( Diana) and their only son Reagan dreaming of joining the cruise lines. Their tenant Balasubramanian (Cajetan de Curtorim)South Indian who lives in the adjacent house adds further to the commotion. All these neighbours form a motley crowd involved in each others affairs. Jacinto’s son Bernard is secretly in love with Sonia, his father is not so happy with the alliance.

At one point there enters Jaiprakash Yadav (Prince Jacob) a young Bihari who sets a small shop in a typical Bihari style in the neighborhood. At first everyone is opposed to him setting up business in their ward, but the Panch Maria Dias over-rules everyone and allows him to put his shop. Jaiprakash Yadav is a shrewd businessman and one has to watch how he turns around the situation to his benefit taking the Goan community for a virtual ride in due course of time. Something that is close to reality. One fine day when he strikes back, the Goan community is totally handicapped and helpless thereby highlighting to what extent a Goan is dependent on these migrants for our daily needs. When his wife (Anita) joins him from his native Bihar, she first attempts to learn the local language. Joe and Jairam have an eye on her, while Jairam is scared of his nagging wife. Humbert too, who is remote controlled by his wife, tries to make hay while the sun shines.

It is a hilarious situation full of fun. Joe Rose, Jacinto in a double role, Simon Gonsalves, Prince Jacob, Diana and Ignatius de Xelvon in the role of a hindu have done a class act in their respective characters. Annie Quadros who shoulders a major part of the script is at her best as the dominating village panch. The playwright has emphatically touched upon various Goan issues in the script such as, the infiltration of migrants, our over dependence on them for several needs, the garbage issue, their political ambitions and how they influence the political process in Goa, and their nexus with politicians.

For three hours one is virtually transferred to the centre of a Goan village and given a broad vision of how the locales tackle their day to day issues. But, a few scenes do tend to sound chaotic, but then again, it is a village set up and this is how it is. At times there are as many as 12 plus characters in a single scene with each one having something to say.

The onstage presentation is beautiful and the playwright has used just one set throughout to depict the entire story. Appropriate light effects by John bring out the desired finish to the various scenes.

Among the songs, a decent solo by Joe Rose, Jr. Reagan, Cajetan de Curtorim on Pulsar motorbike, two trios one by Prince Jacob-Humberto-Jr. Reagan a tribute for M. Boyer, and another by Annie-Anita-Sonia a scathing attack on the Goa Police on the Mahanand serial killer case are simply the best. A comedy duo by Joe Rose and Bernard however failed to impress. The music by Maestro Domnic de Arambol is pleasing and full of punch. ‘Zait Zage’ is a really entertaining show with plenty of healthy comedy and a strong message to every Goan. It’s a show for the entire family if you are looking out for quality entertainment with a sound message.
