Under the aegis of the Konkan Marathi Parishad, the state is gearing up to host a three-day all-India Marathi Sammelan from 15 to 17 January, 2010 at the Dayanand Bandodkar grounds, Panjim.
Incidentally, the Sammelan is being held against the backdrop of the birth centenary of Goa's first revolutionary chief minister Dayanand (Bhausaheb) Bandodkar and Goan Marathi poet par excellence B.B. Borkar.
With an aim to take this task to its logical conclusion, a meet was organised in Panjim to undertake spade work and discuss the nitty-gritty of a Sammelan of this magnitude.

Konkan Marathi expo to display 50,000 books

PANAJI: Over 50,000 Marathi books on various subjects are on display at the three-day exhibition at the Kala Academy campus under the auspices of the Konkan Marathi Parishad, an organisation devoted to the cause of Marathi literature. In all, 45 stalls have been set up.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Friday, hours before the three-day conference on Marathi literature organised by the KMP began.
Books on science, sports, religion, culture, essays, short stories, poems, history, geography, films, dramas, horoscopes and many other subjects are available.
The president of Konkan Marathi Parishad and former Information Officer of Goa Madhu Manguesh Karnik arrived in Goa on Thursday.
He was present for the inauguration of the exhibition along with former Chief Minister Shashikala Kakodkar. Veteran author Dr Subhash Bhende said that Goans by and large buy and read books. At Karad in Maharashtra where the recent All India Marathi literature meet was held in January, he said, books worth Rs 3 crore were sold.

Since its inception Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) has been in the forefront not only in their efforts to promote Konkani but also in recognizing the efforts of our senior most retired Konkani stage artistes. Meet Seby D’Souza – one of the heroes of NIRMONN and hero of Kortubancho Sonvsar
July 31 was quite a busy day for me. In the evening we bid adieu to our dearest colleague and scholar, Dr. Olivinho Gomes at Taleigao. Earlier, in the morning, one of our Anjunkarn, Mrs. Emilia Fernandes, first cousin of Mrs. Martha Aguiar (late M. Boyer’s wife) was interned in Anjuna parish.

The moment I got the news that Emilia had passed away, I remembered her brother, Seby, who lives in Mumbai. I was pleasantly surprised to see him at his sister’s funeral.
I met with him today after around forty years and we both recalled the good old times. Before I begin to write on Seby, let me give readers a brief about him:

Seby’s full name is: Sebastiao Santos George Lorensinho D’Souza. He was colloquially known to his schoolmates as Bosteão. He hails from Kuddchem Bhatt, Anjuna. He is the son of late Xavier Francis D’Souza, the eldest brother of Apolnario D’Souza (M. Boyer’s father-in-law – Martha’s father.)

Seby is the grandson of Pasku (Pascoal) Simão, once upon a time a famous man in Anjuna, who owned a “bongsai” (saw mill) in Kuddchem Bhatt. He employed many workers in his sawmill. In those days, anyone who had workers working for him was categorized as an “astig munis” (well-to-do person.) Pasku Simão was a very good carpenter.

Seby studied in St. Joseph High School in Arpora – a school for which his grandfather had rendered his services as a carpenter when it was built.

He relocated to Bombay in 1957. He fondly remembers the troubles he underwent to go to Bombay by crossing the Nai Bhag River and how his cousin, Mariano, got caught by British soldiers while crossing the river and was jailed in Aronda.

He began his mechanical career in 1958 with Pereira & Sons. In 1968, he joined the National Garage Private Limited in the capacity of a Supervisor. Finally, he established his own business ‘Messrs. SEBSON AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERS’ in Juhu in 1976.

Seby grew up in the midst of seasoned tiatrists like C. Alvares, Robin Vaz, Prem Kumar, Francis de Parra, M. Boyer, Alfred Rose, etc. Obviously, he was inspired and influenced by them.

He was very much interested in tiatros so much so he wrote and directed his first tiatro “MAINCHI DEKH” when he was around 17 years old. He has written and directed about a dozen tiatros. Some of his famous tiatros were:

He recalls in those days there was no much prospect for a tiatro, as it would be shown only once in P.T. (Prince’s Theatre) Bangwaddi. Rarely the same tiatro was shown in other parts of Bombay.

He was a “partist” (played roles) but he also liked to sing, especially duets. He has acted with all professional tiatrists; he was a regular in M. Boyer’s tiatros.


In 1965, Seby got a chance to act in Konkani film ‘Nirmonn’. In this film, he is Claudia’s (Antonette’s) boyfriend. As we all know, it was the best Konkani film ever. Seby carved a niche for himself in this movie and became immortal in everyone’s heart, especially in the hearts of girls!

Seby was very handsome and he still looks a dashing hero. Whenever Bomboikar tiatrists’ group came to Goa and Seby visited Anjuna, we would admire his handsomeness and keep looking at him for as long as we could at the same time dreaming of becoming a hero like him one day. After watching Nirmonn, we hoped he would act in many more Konkani movies.

Our wishes were partly fulfilled when two years later (1967) he played the main role beside Fatima in Albert Britton’s film “Kortubancho Sonvsar”, a ‘Brittona Films’ production.

Seby was chosen for another Konkani film (Mangalorean) but he opted out because their offer was very low. It was a lead role which required a rich wardrobe. Seby told them he would agree to their offer on condition that they provided him with the wardrobe, but they did not agree.

Around 1970, Seby changed from actor-writer-director to a ‘Tiatro Contractor.’ He became one of the main tiatro contractors in Bombay as well as Goa. He also took tiatros to New Delhi. He proudly tells me that he was the one who brought Chris Perry’s show “Novro Mhozo Devchar” to Goa. I think it was Lorna’s maiden debut in that tiatro.



Seby recalls how difficult it was to hire a car in Goa for advertisement purposes - keep in mind there were very few cars in Goa in the 1960s and 1970s.

“None would give us a car on hire for a few hours; not even for half a day; we had to hire a car for a full day. Moreover, it was a problem to bring a car from Margao, Salcete to Mapusa, Bardez. Therefore, I would sometimes bring a car from my garage in Bombay and use it in Goa as per our needs.”

Seby retired from his private business and lives with his family – wife Mary, son Frank and daughter Nisha in Juhu-Koliwadda, Catholic Society, Santa Cruz, Mumbai. Unfortunately, none of his children have followed their father’s footsteps.

However, Seby’s nephew (late Emilia’s son), Henry Fernandes, who recently built a beautiful house at Sorantto, Anjuna, is a very good actor and singer. He is actively involved in tiatros in Doha-Qatar. He has acted with many professional tiatrists like Prince Jacob, late Bab Peter, Sucurrine, late Luis Dias (late Aristide’s son,) etc.

It is people like Seby who we owe our gratitude to for working hard to spread and promote the Konkani language through tiatros.

Despite getting off to a fine start years ago, Konkani cinema doesn't appear
to have come a long way

Goa's relation with cinema can be traced right down to the era of silent films. Not only did Goan musicians playa major role after the advent of the silent film early in the last century, even some Goan actors too played lead roles in more than :40 films each, namely, Ermeline Cardoz, Mohana Cabral, Prem Kumar and others. Besides, we have had a host of Goan playback singers and others in the film world.

Even the first female heroine in an Indian film was of Goan origin. She is Kamala belonging to Kamat family from Assnora. She did the lead role in Dadasaheb Phalke's second film Bhasmmasur Mohini produced in 1913. Kamala's mother Durgabai also featured in the film. Kavas Lord, father of Kersi Lord, the talented music director of Indian silent movies, remembers that Goans 'far outnumbered others in the cinema orchestras with musicians like Sebastian T. Fernandes', Domnic Pereira, Jose Menezes, Manuel Alphonso musically complementing the screen action in the silent films.

The second film was Frank Films' Amchem Noxib released in 1963, almost after 12 years, but during this period some good Konkani films were abandoned halfway like G.M.B. Rodrigues' Sukhi Konn?, C. Alvares' Atancho Sounsar, etc. Amchem Noxib was the most successful Konkani movie ever made. It had a good story, lovely comedy and memorable songs. It was produced by Frank Fernand of Curchorem Goa. Music was also provided by Frank Fernand, who was responsible for musiical arrangement for many Hindi films. It was directed by A. Salam. The starcast included C. Alvares, Rita Lobo in the lead.

Konkani full length feature films of the '50s & '60s

The first full length Konkani film was Mogacho Aunddo released in the year 1950. It was produced under the banner of Etica Pictures (Exchange Talkies of India, China and Africa). The man behind this venture was Jerry Braganza from Mapusa, Bardez Goa. It was based on the Konkani novel Mogachi Vodd by Dioguinho D'Mello. The music was by Alfred Almeida. The cast included Jerry Braganza himself as the hero and Lena Fernandes as the heroine besides Lewis M. Ratus, James Braganza played a memorable role in this classic movie.

Then came Frank Fernand's production entitled Ninnon released in 1966. It was diirected by A. Salam and had superb musical by Frank Fernand himself. C. Alvares, Shalini Mardolkar were the main stars in this film. Later, Frank Fernand went on to produce Hindi films as well, to name a few, Priya starring Sanjeev Kumar and Tanuja; Aahat starring Jaya Bhaduri and Dr. Shreeram Lagoo. Both were offbeat movies which didn't do well at the box office- a big loss to Frank Fernand and for the Konkani cinema lovers too because we would have got at least two more Konkani movies instead.

It was Jerry Braganza who added another feather to his cap in 1967 by releasing his second Konkani film Sukhachem Sopon affter a long gap. It was released under the banner of 'Helen Productions'. Jerry Braganza himself acted as the hero opposite Fatima in that film. The lyrics were by Alfred Rose, music by M. Alphonso.

The fifth film, Moji Gorkarn was produced by Shalini Mardolkar and A Salam under the banner of 'Movierama' . It was written and directed by A. Salam . Frank Fernand provided the lyrics and music for this film. Shalini herself was the heroine of this film and C Alvares, the hero.
The first Konkani film to be released in the '70s was Cortubbancho Sounsar . It was produced by Albert de Brittona under the banner of 'Brittona Film' and starring in it were Rico Rod, Fatima, Seby and others. Music was by M. Alphonso, dialogues by Reginaldo Fernaandes and it was diirected by Ravindra Vyas. The following year, 1971, saw the release of Ambi ka Films' Jivir Amchem Oxem. It was produced by Muthukrishnan Das and directed by Y V Rao. It had dialogues and lyrics by famous Goan poet Dr. Manohar Rai Sardessai. Its music was by Vijay Bhaskar. The star-cast included Dr. Suresh Ramani and Betty Naz in the lead .

Later in 1975, Muthukrishnan Das produced another Konkani film Boglantt, under the banner of 'Ambika Films'. He himself directed this film. The story was by Prem Kumar, lyrics and music by Alfred Rose and starring in it were Prem Kumar and Rita Rose.

In 1977 United Youngsters of Mangalore released Mog ani Moipas. one of the first collour movies In Konkani. The man behind this production was Capt. Mervyn J. Pinto. It was directed by N. L. R. Sahyadri. Providing the lyrics and music for this film was Wilfy Reimbus and its stars included Ossie Sequeira and Leena Fernandes. Another Konkani colour movie Bhuiarantlo Munis was released in Goa under the banner of 'Chripton Motion Pictures'. It was coproduced by Tony Coutinho and Chris Perry. The story, lyrics and music came from Chris Perry. The star-cast included Ivo Almeida, Helen Pereira and C Alvares.


Konkani full length feature films of the '70s till date.
In 1978, Konkan Pictures' Teesri Chitt was released in Mangalore. It was produced by Peter Gonsalves and diirected by G. D'Souza. Its music was by Henry T. D'Souza. The leading actors were Herrald Moraes and Stany Pereira. Two years later, Gurukripa Films Tapaswini was reeleased in Karnataka.Its starcast included Rekha Mavinkure and B. V. Baliga. This film was followed by Vikas Films' Jana Mana released in 1981. It was produced and directed by K. Ramesh Kamath. B. V. Baliga, Sumana Rao starred in this film.

Many Konkani tele-films were produced since the '80s like Bonifacio Dias' Zulum, X. Almeida's Time Pass, Pundalik Adkonkar's Akant, etc. Sudesh Lotlikar's Zait is said to be the first teleefilm to be telecast on Mumbai Doordarshan. Besides, he has produced Konkani video films like Avoi. Many Goa Doordarshan produced video films have been really good, Tulsi, 'Maryan', Marnkatto, Sharada, Sweekruti, Sangati, Moronn, Tunch mhoji Laxmi, Tyag starring Amita N. Salatry and Girish Kelekar, Hans Mure Hans being some of them.
Bonifacio Dias has to his credit some wonderful Konkani video-films like Doth Dennem, Zulum, Zababdari, starring Anil Kumar, Ulhas Buyanv and others, Moriad and To Dis Udelo. Kazara Uprant produced in Mangalore has music by Wilfy Rebimbus, John D'Silva's 'Xinn' was also a very good video film. F. Cardozo's telefilm Arxeant Poi starring Santan Pegado is also to be noted. C. Alvares' Faxi Mogachi also became popular starring Shalini Mardolkar, Peter Dias and other professional Konkani actors. Rajendra Talak's Situ was a very popular video film of the '90s.
Dekhani Durai produced by Hema Naik and Vijay Pai Khot starring Ashalata Wabgaonkar was a hit video film of the last decade. Hilary Production Bhavachem Dennem produced by Mr. Norman was a popular Konkani video film, besides Upkar filmed in foreign countries with foreign star-cast was superb. The latest video film released in the theatres by D’Costa Telefilm Productions’ Kantteantlem Ful produced by Arnold D’Costa is a well appreciated contemporary film. Directed by Dyanesh Moghe, its lyrics are by Anil Kumar and music by Agostinho da Cruz and the star-cast includes Roseferns, Chitra, Imran Mohamed, Suchita Narvekar and Smita Shirodkar.

ERMELINE CARDOZ
She was the first Goan film-heroine

Ermeline Cardoz, a native of Diwar Goa born on 7th May 1908, was a famous heroine from the silent era Of the Indian screen. She was known as “Marry Pickford of lndia" and was often called by the name "Sudhabala". Her first film was Hothal Padmini (1925). She was a good dancer and a well known Konkani stage actress too. She married Saib Rocha, one of the . leading Konkani stage actors. The most popular tiatr in which she acted was Lusitanian Dramatic Co's Alma Vetat Sorgar on 17th October 1932.
She was killed in an accident on sets of a film. She acted in Cinema Girl (1930) opposite Prithviraj Kapoor. Besides she had acted in around 40 films, most of them had English titles as was the style of Indian films those times.
Some of her other films were Daring Damsel (1933), Vanishing Hope, Red Signal, Wooing Nightingale, Ram Barose, Kicks of Kismet, Love is Blind, Hoor-E-Bagdad, Jagadguru, Gulshan-E-Arab, and Children of the Storm.

Konkani Short Films/ Documentary Films

Religious Konkani short films were made even in the '40s One was on the life of Jesus Christ like Jinn-Morn Jesuchem shown at Swastic Cinema, Old Pathe Cinema, Mumbai in 1948. Thereafter, Hakich Jinn ani Morn Jesus Christachem was released on 10th April 1949 at Capitol Cinema, Mumbai. It is said that many Konkani similar short films have been produced as according to the old issues of the periodical' Ave Maria'. The message of Fatima is a documentary film on Our Lady of Fatima. 'Nossa Senhora do Fatima' was released in Goa in.1950. It was produced by AI Jerry Braganza. Sant Francis Xavier is another documentary film in Konkani on the exposition of St. Francis Xavier in 1952 also produced and directed by Al Jerry Braganza. This documentary was also available in Hindi, English and Portuguese version also.
Don Bosco is a dubbed film from the Italian feature film by Leandro Castellani starring Ben Gazzara as Don Bosco. It isa 30 minutes film in Konkani. It was also dubbed in many other Indian languages. Another teleplay Mhoji Kanni produced, directed and written by Dharmanand Vernekar for Directorate of Adult Education in 1992, was an educational documentary. Goenchem Mannik-Padr Jose Vaz is a documentary film based on the life of Fr. Jose Vaz produced by Rachol Seminary.
O Bai is the first and the only Konkani short film to have been honoured internationally. It was produced under the banner of “Aur Kya? Films" by Neeta Jain Duhaut. It was filmed in 16 mm (colour) in Goa and Pune in 1997. The leading role was played by Dnyanesh Moghe.
Documenting Konkani Cinema Heritage
A museum or an archive for Konkani cinema and music is a must as it will arouse the interest of Konkani people in safeguarding their heritage. This will help in preserving for posterity Konkani film posters, photographs, lobby cards, Konkani gramophone records and other vintage film publicity material, now, on the verge of extinction. For example, nobody knows the whereabouts of the first Konkani film Mogacho Aundo. This black and white nitrate based film is almost forgotten and most probably destroyed. Even a big colour poster of Mogacho Aundo lying somewhere is 50 per cent destroyed by silver fish and requires restoration. Is anybody interested?

Suggestions for development of Konkani cinema:
I. Every year financial support in the form of subsidy or in any other way to at least five producers to produce five Konkani films in that particular year.
2. Any Konkani film exhibited in the cinema houses or elsewhere should be given tax exemption in other words all Konkani films should be shown tax free to encourage exhibition of Konkani films so that the ticket rates are reduced and the common people are encouraged to go and watch it at a concessional rate.
3. Any Konkani film produced by an individual or a company or a foreign party of people from outside the Goa should be supported by all without any discrimination .
4. The Goa Government should make it compulsory for every cinema house in Goa to screen at least one Konkani film for at least one day a month.
5. A film city is required in Goa, infrastructure and technical assistance should be made available as at present the producer has to depend on equipment from neighbouring States. Hence a fullfledged studio is a must.
6. Konkani film songs and other Konkani videos, programmes based on Konkani films should be frequently broadcast on radio and T.V.
7. Workshops, seminars, film appreciation courses for awareness on Konkani films must be conducted.
8. Exhibition of Konkani cinema posters and other publicity material like the lobby cards, photographs, song synopsis booklets, etc. must be displayed.
9. Konkani Film festivals must be held every year, festival of all the old Konkani films must be held to revive the classic Konkani cinema.
10.Every year 'Konkani Cinema Day' should be celebrated on the 24'h April to commemorate the release of the first Konkani film on this day in 1950.

Some facts to ponder ...
I. Not a single Indian film is so far dubbed in Konkani.
2. Every month there are new releases of big films in Marathi, Kannada and other languages, but in Goa there is not a single release of a big celluloid Konkani film even once a year. (For more than ten years now, not a single big film has been released!)
3. Not a single Konkani feature film has been produced or partially financed by the Goa Government so far.
4. During the last 20 years only three Konkani full-length celluloid motion pictures were released. All three were produced by non-Goans. They are Girestkai by a Tamil, Bogsanhe by a Mangalorian and Jeevanacho Khell by Karwar based party.
5. Recently, the Goa Government has decided to produce a film (telefilm?) , with a budget of Rs 40 lakh on Goa's Freedom struggle. The film is to be made in Hindi or Marathi then get it dubbed n Konkani.

Who is the driving force behind your successful career?

- My father was a dramatist and a bhajan artist. He performed at local temple shows. He wanted us to achieve perfection in bhajan singing so every morning he would allot us a particular bhajan to sing. Both my brother and me followed this training routine. My brother being well versed in singing showed me the right direction. Even now, before a performance my brother’s teachings still play on my mind.

When did you begin singing?

I began by compering ‘Yuva-vani’ shows at the age of fifteen. While compering I got the opportunity to showcase my singing talent in Konkani and Marathi. These performances removed my stage fear and gave me confidence. The late Ms Ranjana Kasab helped me improve further.

Has critical judgement changed your life in anyway?

Yes, this experience involved one of my own family members. During my days of struggle a relative refused to lend me rupees 20, a fee needed for my singing classes. He said pursuing such a low job was not worth it. Possessing a passion for singing, I was naturally upset, but at the same time it built encouragement in me and I wanted to challenge his words. From then onwards I never looked back. Having an interest in classical and semi-classical music I took every opportunity that came along. One of my title songs, ‘Mhoji Tulsi Tuzo Khuris’ was even released in Dubai. I also sang a Konkani devotional song for an audio album, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’. I wanted to be a playback singer. When Doordarshan started producing telefilms it further opened doors of opportunity. It got me a nomination for the best playback singer category at a state film festival.Tell us something about your group ‘Yash Prabha’?

In 2001 my brother came up with the idea of forming a group, which we named after our parents. My father’s name Yashwant was shortened to Yash and Prabhawati my mother’s name to Prabha. The formation of the group began with just four members. A man on the synthesiser, a tabla player (me), a female vocalist and a compere. So far we have given 161 performance.

Today we have many talented people in the group. As your father was a dramatist, did you develop an interest to it?

Right from age of eight I have participated in dramas and sung songs for a famous programme called ‘Khallar ani Mallar’, which was aired on All India Radio. I began script writing for dramas by seven and directed my first play at 12. At that time there was no television in Goa. My Marathi drama ‘He Rama Atmarama’ has completed 38 shows in Maharashtra and Goa. I was a part of Dr Vijay Thali’s first Konkani musical drama ‘Saimacho Khel’ that gave performances in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Orissa with a total of 25 shows.

Besides performing drama and singing have you been involved in anything else?

I have composed a song for a movie ‘Goa Ka Swadhinta Sangram’ and also performed four different roles in it that of a sage, a sarpanch, an advocate and a freedom fighter. Bakibab Borkar wrote this movie and the music was sung by a noted playback singer Suresh Wadkar. In addition to singing and acting, I have been part of the media too.

What are your currently pursuing?

I am focusing on singing and also involved with day job. Besides I am anchor with FM, which I have been doing for the last 23 years and my work with the primary channel ‘Bhauche Balkav’ continues.

Your message?

If one believes that one has the potential one should work on their talent and not let go of it. Trying hard and succeeding is anyone’s biggest achievement. Never imitate. Be innovative and don’t be afraid to experiment.

Glenn Perry pays tribute to MJ

Dubai Aug 8, 2009: Friday evening, 7th July 2009, Dubai paid tribute to Music’s Greatest Icon and Acknowledged KING OF POP, Michael Jackson at The Mazaya Centre.

Organised by Dubai’s own Glenn Perry, it featured the Students and Friends of The Dubai Music School performing MJ’s classical hits in a show that had the audience (and what a great turnout that was!!) enjoying themselves on their feet singing along with the performers.

The performers not only sang, but there were at least 4 MJ lookalikes giving the audience a taste of the fantastic dance steps that MJ was famous for.

The younger students of the School gave a beautiful performance of "We are the World" with everybody in the Centre joining in.

Needless to say the finale was, of course "Heal The World", with one little worry that the roof of the Centre was going to take off, considering all who were present joined in.

That was a fantastic evening, that was – and a fitting tribute to Michael Jackson, a rarest of beings who strived to bring to the notice of the world the evils that beset us, through his music.

Dubai singer - musician Glenn Perry is organizing a tribute concert in honour of Michael Jackson. The event is slated for 7th August at the Mazaya Centre at 7 pm.
"Michael Jackson was a musical inspiration to many and we here in Dubai join the world in celebrating his legacy".
75 young talented singers and dance performers from Dubai will participate in the Michael Jackson tribute concert. Its amazing to see the enthusiasm in these young performers says Perry who is the producer, director and choreographer of the concert.
The young singers are busy rehearsing Jackson songs. The dance performers are working hard at impersonating dance grooves through Jackson's moves, including the famous moonwalk. Also billed to perform are The Dubai Children's Choir who are all ready to rock with the song "We are the World". A young adult chorus group called the The Desert Chorale will belt out Jackson's "Heal the World".

Vasco, Jul 30: Noted writer Dr Olivinho J F Gomes passed away on Thursday July 30. He was a noted scholar, polyglot writer, poet, translator, broadcaster and telecaster, and has over 40 published books to his credit.
At a condolence meeting in Vasco, the Goan Poet's Forum mourned the death of Dr Gomes. Yusuf A Sheikh, president of the Forum, expressed shock at the sudden passing away of Dr Gomes, who, he said was a gigantic personality in the development of the Konkani language.
“He was a self-made man of extraordinary qualities and a great scholar who kept himself involved in the pursuit of knowledge. He was a rare Goan in the Indian Revenue Service. With unflinching interest he dedicated his time to conducting spectacular research on Konkani language and literature. We have lost a towering Konkani personality”, Sheikh added.
Pandharinath Damodar Lotlikar described Dr Gomes as a distinguished Goan who made everyone proud by occupying the post of the Vice Chancellor of Goa University. “His contribution to translation of Indian classics and his dedication to Konkani language and education at the university level are laudable”, he said.
Ashok Chodankar, condoling the death of Dr Gomes, described him as a great patriot who had in-depth knowledge of Indian history and Indian culture.
Clarence Furtado described Dr Gomes as a Konkani writer of exceptionally high standard which had resulted in him being on the executive board of the national Sahitya Akademi representing Konkani language.
Anil Kamat Shankhwalkar said that the literary work of Dr Gomes has both local and national flavour and is a great source of inspiration to upcoming Goan writers.
Gopinath Shah, Andre Fernandes, Stanley Vaz and others paid tribute to the departed soul and expressed heartfelt condolences.
In a message written on a Goan website, renowned fashion designer Wendell Rodricks wrote, “A terrible loss. I referred to his books a lot for my work. Sympathy and prayers for his family.”
Born in St Estevam, Goa, in 1943, he served as the official translator (Konkani, Portuguese, French and English)for the Goa Government Secretariat from 1965 to 1970.
After his IAS, he joined the IRS(Indian Revenue Service –Customs and Central Excise,Class-I) in 1970. He retired as Additional Collector of Customs and Central Excise at Aurangabad, Maharashtra in 1987.
He quit the service to serve the cause of Konkani as the first full professor of Konkani language and literature at the new Goa University, in accordance with UGC norms in October 1986.
He set up from scratch, as it were, the new Department of Konkani Language and Literature at the post-graduate level in the varsity while introducing it at the under-graduate level.
He formulated courses from under-graduate to post-graduate levels of education in Konkani for the first time and implemented them in a phased manner.
A noted scholar, Dr Gomes has presented papers and lectures at regional, national and international seminars and conferences in India and abroad on topics relating to language, literature, translation, history, sociology-anthropology and culture in general, and covering inter-disciplinary themes, some of which were later published in reputed professional as well as specialized journals and conference proceedings.
He has been a member of the expert’s panel of the UGC, NCERT, UPSC, K K Birla Foundation and other national academic and literary bodies including the Indian Languages Promotion Council headed by the Prime Minister.
He has won various awards nationally and internationally including the National Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation in 1993.

Writers from the Konkani literary field and academicians paid their final tributes to noted Konkani proponent Dr Olivinho Gomes, whose body was laid to rest at the Taleigao cemetery on Friday. Pundalik Naik, Victor Albuquerque, Yusuf Shaikh and Tomazinho Cardozo were among those who attended the funeral ceremony and earlier visited the house of the noted writer. Over a thousand people attended the ceremony. Cardozo, who is the President of Tiatr Academy, said Dr Olivinho was the only person who worked in both, Devanagri and Roman scripts and his death was definitely a loss to the Konkani literary world. He said even in his death Dr Olivinho left behind a jewel, a book titled The History of Konkani Literature in Roman Script, which he wrote for the Dalgado Konknni Akademi in English. The book had been proof read and they were to get his approval for printing the book, he stated. House mournsThe House today mourned the death of the noted writer Dr Olivinho J F Gomes, who passed away on Thursday.Speaking on the obituary reference moved by Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today said that in Dr Gomes’ death the State has lost a real son of the soil.“Dr Gomes was an able administrator and possessed tremendous knowledge,” Kamat said in the House adding “he wanted to make some sort of contribution to the State of Goa.”Kamat continued that the professor of Konkani has written over 40 books “which are well known not only in the State and country but even abroad.”Dy Speaker Mauvin Godinho also joined in mourning the death by saying “We have truly lost a true Goan.”In his obituary reference Sequeira said “the professor was a true Konkani lover.”“We must salute him as he left his top job and joined the Goa University dedicating his life to the language,” he stated.St Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes said that Dr Gomes had a lot of love for Konkani and wanted to give recognition to Romi Konkani.“He worked a lot for Konkani and loved Goa and the language,” she said adding “We need to realise his dream.”PWD Minister Churchill Alemao said that Dr Gomes was of the opinion that the identity of Goans will survive only on the Konkani language and nothing else.

He strongly felt that the Goa Legislative Assembly, in an unnecessary haste,to expedite the Official Language Act of Goa, had done a grave injustice to a very big section of the Goan Society , by ignoring the aspirations of the Roman Script readers and writers of Konkani, in Goa , Mumbai and Overseas. Whenever Dr, Olivinho Gomes spoke on the subject of the Roman Script, he spoke with self-conviction supported by facts and figures.Dr Olivinho was equally at ease with the Devanagari Script as well as the Roman Script and has written books in both the Scripts,in addition to the English language.The "Romi Lipi Action Front" has lost an active Konkani worker and a friend in the death of Dr. Olivinho. Tiatr Academy of Goa has expressed deep grief over the sudden death of Dr. Olivinho Gomes on 31st July, 2009. Dr. Gomes was one personality on the field of Konkani language in Goa who contributed to the development of Konkani in both the scripts – Devnagori and Roman. A scholar of Konkani, he became the first Head of Department of Konkani in the Goa University and toiled hard to make post-graduate study in Konkani attractive to the modern generation. His love towards Konkani compelled him to resign from his lucrative Central Government job and join Goa University.

Due to his versatility in languages he was invited to present papers not only in the country but in various parts of the world. Dr. Gomes always focused Goa in his presentations at the national as well as international seminars in which he participated. He has over 40 books on various subjects to his credit and his papers that he presented at the international seminars in Portugal, France, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany and in many other countries in the world are published. A gigantic contribution of single individual indeed! His writings – books as well as articles – are proofs of his profound love towards Goa and its identity.

In his death Goa has lost an illustrious son in general and Konkani language a dedicated and committed protagonist in particular. May his soul rest in peace!

The regional office of Indian Council of Cultural Relations will be set up in Goa soon. Announcement to this effect was made by the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who also holds the portfolio of Art & Culture, while replying to demands for grants on Tuesday. Kamat said his request to Dr Karan Singh has been acceded. They need some premises which would be provided, he said.
“This will give boost to the Goa artistes and help them especially the budding artists to perform in India and abroad”, he told the Goa assembly.
Kamat also stated that the Council on Linguistics has also been requested to open their branch office in Goa. “I will pursue the matter with union HRD minister Kapil Sibal,” he added.

Playwright and director Mario Menezes kicks off the season with a suspense thriller Love Story 2009' on Sunday in Ponda. Obviously, the theme revolves around a love story. "This time it's a different story altogether, and not like my earlier plays which were based on family stories," said Menezes. Love Story 2009' has 14 songs, besides 6 kantos. Victor, who excelled as child artiste earlier, teams up with Mario this season. Kuwait-based Michael D'Silva will render two solos in this show. The music will be provided by Agost de Panchwadi.
