BOGLLANTT - super hit Konkani film of 1973

BOGLANTT (THE BLAME)

Boglantt is the super hit Konkani film of 1975 which is presented in DVD format by Leonoras-a Group of Ventures, Goa. The film stars Prem Kumar and Rita Rose in the lead. It has been produced and directed by Muthu Krishna Das.

The story which is adapted from "No Vacancy" tiatr of Prem Kumar goes as under:
Money is the root cause of all evil. Maria’s husband is on death bed who requests his brother Tyron to take care of his wife Maria and son Cedric after his demise. Tyron is an avaricious man who in his penchant for amassing wealth forgets parenting and as a result his children are ill bred. He forcibly hunts out Maria and Cedric. Both of them leave for Mangalore. But unfortunately due to incessant rains, Cedric falls sick and is tended by Dr Henry who provides shelter to both of them. Cedric graduates with honours but is jobless. One day Cedric at the risk of his life manages to rescue Marylyn from the clutches of hooligans. Marylyn manages to provide him a job in her father-George’s home. In fact George is a family friend of Cedric but Tyron has lied him that he is dead. Tyron reaches Mangalore and is shocked to see Cedric working as Manager with George. With the abetment of a cabaret dancer, he tries to create rift between Cedric and Marylyn who are in love. Marylyn’s necklace is robbed and Cedric is blamed for that. Cedric goes to question the cabaret dancer about the reason for blaming him for the necklace robbery, only to find her in a pool of blood. Fate plays a cruel game on Cedric and his mother. Cedric is arrested and Maria dies in a tragic accident. The DVD is to be watched to see how the story unfolds.

Two parallel stories run in the film, one of harassment and the other of tribulations. Director Das presents a real story and some incidents are very touching. The acting of Prem Kumar, Betty Naz and Saby Coutinho is superb. There are catchy tunes as the musical score is provided by noted Alfred Rose who created a record by recording all the eight songs of the film in one day. The film boasts of a hit song in Nimannem Besanv. The film is shot mostly in Karnataka and has Mangalorean and Goan actors.

[The above was the inaugural speech given  by Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter moderator,
Gaspar Almeida, http://www.goa-world.com/, who was the guest speaker at this Condolence Meeting, organized by Kuwait Konknni Kendr on 16th February 2011 at the Village Inn Restuarant, Kuwait City].

English translation follows:
It is said that Death follows us from the time of birth. But suddenly from amongst our midst, a loved one, a famous Goan’s demise, at a very tender stage, it saddens our heart more. Mario Rebello, on behalf of Kuwait Konkani Kendr, invited me to attend this Condolence Meet, amongst your midst. Many a Goan, Mangalorean, Tiatrists, Konkani associations came to the fore to express their condolences, sympathies and prayers. In a very special way, in Goa, hundreds attended the last religious funeral rites.

After Fr. Diago ended the Holy Eucharistic celebrations in Colva Church, Tiatrists Osvi Viegas, Premanand Lotlikar, Joaquim D’Costa, lend a hand to carry the coffin to the graveyard for the burial. We received these photos at the same time, on the same day! After returning from Goa, his brother Fidelis Fernandes and family offered the Death Remembrance Mass at the Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait City. Among the many Christians and non-Christians attending the prayers, we witnessed the largest number among the Tiatrists Faternity, for the very first time. Tiatr Academy of Goa organized a Condolence Meet last week. This is the first time such a prayer meet was organized for an expat Goan Konkani artiste, Rosary Ferns, and offering their thanks and acknowledgement and tribute for his contributions towards the Konkani stage.

Rosary Ferns’ Konkani songs, VCD, CD and cassettes will be remembered for a long time, Fr. Lionel Mascarenhas quoted Kuwait Goa-Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) president, at the Eucharistic Celebrations at Kuwait Church.

Rosary Ferns had a fond liking and love for Kuwait, like all those who are present here. Several of his songs/dramas were based on Kuwait’s lifestyle and Goans as the expatriate community or their families. Example: Kuwaitchea Dinar, Sukh Khuim Asam?, Rag, Mojem Dusrem Ghor, Ami Chuklim, Tumcam Lagon Jielom, Bhurgim Mai Paichem Sukh, Ghor Bandlem Ghorabo Moddlo, Kuwait Soddun Vetanam! Ani his final VCD presentation yet to be released is titled ‘Thank You Kuwait’!

Some of the songs which highlighted the tributes of many have been well composed, written and sung by him. After Alfred Rose’ demise, Rosary Ferns’ song is among the best to pay homage and tribute. This song can be heard via the Internet-ar and goa-world.com radio station. When his fellow artiste, Sanny de Quepem, bade goodbye to this world, in his song dedicated to him, the words in Konkani ….. amcam soggleank moron ravta, tumchea fattlean, ami etoleat, voir Sorgar mevum-ia. [Death awaits us all, we will soon join you, let’s meet us in Heaven above]. These touching words brings tears to our eyes!

The news about someone’s death brings us great sadness. We rush to express our sorrow, our condolences. This is a good gesture, a good habit.

Many a times, when one offers tributes and forwards condolence messages on the internet or the print media, we get the feeling that we are into some kind of competition. A small prayer offered for the departed soul would be ideal and more effective. Some who have the habit of drumming up their habitual ways of writing a few lines to express their hidden motives. It has been observed that through such messages and tributes some of the family’s members are torn into disputes and we force on them more sadness. That’s why, we have to be decent, honest and observe net etiquette and use the right words and feelings to express ourselves, using our minds properly.

He is too young, he is not knowledgeable – such remarks are more abusive and tarnishes the image! I am always more knowledgeable than others, one should not think. Rosary Ferns sang a Konkani song titled ‘kavllo rodlo lozen’ (the crow cried in shame) and he has given a lesson and focus to us all.

My last email to RosaryFerns was when Salvador Dias requested me to forward the newly designed logo of Kuwait Goan Association, it was for “Thank you Kuwait” VCD! Thereafter he was to proceed to Goa on holidays. Regards and Goodbye. Rosary- these were my final words, my last farewell!

Through his dramas, he has managed to highlight several social issues which can be of essence. A special attributed which we liked about RosaryFerns is, todate no one would say that he has enraged or talked bad about anyone. These are our observations. RosaryFerns had the unique distinction of not propogating and expressing ill about anyone. Atleast we have not heard such a thing from anyone, any time.

Goa-World.com website-n established an international Konkani Music Station in 2000 by Ulysses Menezes and myself. In the last 10 years, this has become a much liked and famous Konkani radio outlet, and you can hear hundreds of Konkani songs, at no charge to anyone. One will be able to hear Rosary Ferns songs, atleast one or two, every day!

In a message forwarded to me by goa-world.com founder Ulysses Menezes, which he requested me to relay today at this Meeting, he wrote “In fond remembrance of your contribution as a Goan Konkani singer, actor, writer, director and composer, we dedicate this radio station’s “Glorious Singers’ section to you RosaryFerns today 16th February 2011”.

Kuwait’s associations and their members have always expressed their willingness to Rosary Ferns to organize and assist in his dramas or musical shows. Among these include the organization which has put us this Condolence Meet today, Kuwait Konknni Kendr, Konkani Heritage Kuwait, Colva United Centre, Kuwait Goan Association, U.G. Centre, YRC, New Goans Overseas Association, and Mangalorean organizations KCWA and Konkan Kala Samithi, which staged RosaryFerns’ tiatr ‘Kuwait Soddun Vetana’.

A year and a month ago, on 16th January 2010, our Indian Ambassador, Ajai Malhotra, in my presence as well as with prominent Goans on the podium, in in appreciation with the Konkani stage works Rosary Ferns has undertaken in Kuwait for almost over 20 years, on behalf of Kala Mogui Kuwait President, Domingos Araujo honoured him by presenting a Shawl and a Memento. In his few words, he gladly thanked KMK and accepted this honour. He was capable of earning many much laurels and accolades, but God’s only knows about our destiny.

Lastly, while concluding, our deepest condolences to the family once again, and also to KKK members and the tiatrists fraternity. Our long friendship with Fideis Fernandes and his brother-in-law Agnelo Alcacoas, who are on record to be elected KIFF president and Vice president respectively. At this juncture, while we share in their grief, let us pray to the Almighty to give them the solace and strength to bear this great loss. A voice will not be heard anymore, a smiling face will never be seen! May God grant RosaryFerns’ soul eternal rest. May God bless us all. Rest in peace, dear RosaryFerns.
