Dear Mr Martinho Mendes,
Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS)

The people of Goa and Salcete in particular appreciate the role of your esteemed instution in the overland Kuwait.

Recently the Govt of Goa has thought of opening a Tiatr Academy. Its inaugural function is scheduled for 16/02/2009.

It is necessary that the tiatrist have their achievements documented, the dead be posthumously remembered, and those living appropriately rewarded. All this needs an unbiased committee of those heading the Tiatr Academy. Many feel that this is lacking with the present leadership.

There is a suggestion that the trio listed below should invariably form the triumvarate of the Tiatr movement and hence their photographs should be in place in every institution promoting the tiatr movement.

There should be a compilation of

a) Deceased tiatrists: Male and Female
b) List of SENIOR tiatrist Male and Female pre- Liberation :1961 (living)
c) List of tiatrist post Liberation Male and Female
d) List of tiatrists from the 21st century onwards ( 2000 onwards )

Once this list is compiled it can be placed on any website blog etc to give it vide publicity for additions deletions corrections suggestions etc.

This list will form a ready reckoner for any institution private or government to consider awards.

REQUIEM MASS HELD FOR ALFRED ROSE IN KUWAIT

A requiem mass was held for the departed soul of Alfred Rose in the Holy
Family Cathedral, Kuwait on October 29, 2003 at 5:30 pm offered by the
Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha, Kuwait.

Popularly known as ‘Goa’s Melody King’, Alfred Rose expired on October 21,
2003, leaving behind a legacy of popular Konkani songs, novels, brief acting
stints in Konkani movies, and other various commendable works towards
enriching Konkani language,

The mass celebrated by Fr. Dominic Santamaria was attended by huge number of
people from Goa, Bombay and Mangalore. The overwhelming presence of many
artists from the tiatr fraternity showed their love and affection for this
late artist. Fr. Dominic in his homily emphasized about Alfred’s humbleness
and devotion to the Holy Church. He remembered witnessing Alfred prostrate
humbly in submission to God during his last visit to the Holy Family
Cathedral Kuwait. Fr. Dominic called all to follow the footsteps of Alfred
to become pious and humble in every way to become pleasing to God.

Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (Kuwait-Goa Dramatists Association) thanks
Fr. Dominic Santamaria, the Bishops and all the clergy of Holy Family
Cathedral, Holy Family Choir and all the attendees and pray for eternal rest
for the soul of Alfred Rose.

Welfare of the aged retired tiatrists

If anyone thinks about death which may come at any
moment. I think surely no one would like to create
enemity among ourselves. In my dramatic career I have
acted, sung and composed numerous songs. I am proud
of myself to do so. But I would like to tell my
fellow tiatrist a death is waiting for us, which will
end every part of our life, what remains is whatever
good you do in this world to others, where you will
always be remembered by the masses.

Now coming to Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha. This
sonvstha was formed by a few dedicated tiatrists for
the benefit of the aged and retired tiatrists. Till
date these few tiatrist have worked for eight hours at
their workplace and another 4 hours they have worked
for the old and retired tiatrists begging with every
Goans who love the art of tiatr, for helping our
tiatrists back at home, tell me my Kuwait Goan
brothers
are these tiatrists wrong in any way??? I salute them
as the President of this Sonvstha.

God has given power to the devil to create evil among
mankind, which the devil is all set to do. The Kuwait
Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha is in the forefront with
their hard work and sweat, they are all out to work
for our needy brothers back at home. They have
created history among any organization in Kuwait and
the cheats and selfish people do not like the good
work being done for others, their jealous motives will
see the end soon.

“Devache bodiec avaz assonam” After every show this
sonsvtha sends money to these needy tiatrist for which
the needy tiatrist are most grateful to the Kuwait Goa
Tiatristanchi Sonvstha. We should not boast about
ourselves but pray to the Almighty creator to give us
strength understanding and good faith to carry on with
the good work.

An open letter was addressed to me by one Comedian Ben
maybe a year ago. I would like to tell you Ben we at
KGTS work for unity among Goan tiatrists and every
Goan
who loves tiatr art is welcome to this fold and we are
not for division. Your open letter to me had no
meaning cause whatever you had written on that open
letter had no sense. Learn to earn your leaving for
eight hours with hard work and than teach others your
doctrine. We at KGTS are working and sweating for
eight hours and even after our hard days works we are
thinking about our needy tiatrist in Goa, our
motherland. I have come to know about your evil
thinkings on KGTS. God forbid one day you may need
this sonvstha, of which you are ill thinker, don’t get
carried away by evil. For your information I have
seen in front of my eyes young tiatrists like Francis
de Parra, Bernand de Aldona, Bab Peter, Young Mendes
who were wonderful singers bloomed and faded away.
May God grant their souls eternal rest. Pride has a
fall which I want you to remember always, you say
Jesus loves you, but on the other hand you are trying
to create evil. You cannot serve two masters at one
time, either honour the Almighty God the creator of
mankind or serve your true master that is the devil.
Please come to your senses Ben because one day we all
surely have to die.

May the Almighty help us to work in the right
direction. LONG LIVE KGTS LONG LIVE GOA.

Condolence Meeting Held in Kuwait by KGTS

The untimely demise of late Julio Morais and late Fr.
Freddy Da Costa was condoled at a condolence meeting
held by the Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS),
Kuwait on 24th May 2004 at the Royal Terrasse,
Salmiya at 7:00 p.m.

KGTS President, Francis de Verna in his opening speech
highlighted the tragic loss to Konkani Lovers due to
the sudden death of Julio Morais, Fr. Freddy J. Da
Costa, Felicio Cardoso and Frank Pires.

Cajetan de Sanvordem, speaking on late Julio Morais -
the beloved father/father-in-law of Augusto/Gracy
(both KGTS members) said that the latter who spent
several years in Kuwait involved himself mainly in two
things: Konkani dramas and football.
He helped many Konkani drama directors in Kuwait
including his ganv-bhav late Tavares de Ribandar,
whose drama "Milagrincho Khuris" was staged by Julio
Morais.

Another senior KGTS member, Junifer Rodrigues added
that Julio Morais was a great Konkani lover and would
go to any length to promote Konkani. He was always
ahead to help the needy Goans.

While condoling Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa's death,
Cajetan de Sanvordem expressed how deeply he was
shocked when he learnt goa-world.com and goanet, that
Fr. Freddy is no more. Cajetan briefed on the life of
Fr. Freddy from his childhood when he was studying for
priesthood in the seminary, and also writing dramas in
which Cajetan used to act.

Fr. Freddy used to say that to give message to the
audience through dramas is the best way, people digest
it easily. Fr. Freddy has given so much to the Konkani
world for which he worked continuously till his
death.

Cajetan recollected that on 20th July 2003 Fr. Freddy
celebrated his 50th birthday at Gomantak Vidhya
Niketan, Margao-Goa where GULAB awards were
distributed, in his speech the late Fr. Freddy said:
“Mhojea ponas vorsamchea jivitant mornan don pavtt

Alas Fr. Freddy could not fulfill his last wish.

Rich tributes were also paid to late Mr. Felicio
Cardozo, and prayers were offered to the Almighty in
rememberance of Frank Pires also.

– May their souls rest in peace.

Konkani Tiatr lovers in Kuwait cares for them and that
their contribution is not forgotten by the new
generation. This is indeed an exceptional and unique
deed.

Welcome to Kuwait, Master Vaz !

Master Vaz - one of the professional guest artistes -
arrived in Kuwait this evening to star in Marcus Vaz's
drama 'Almanchea Disa' accompanied by Maestro Josinho
and Antonette de Calangute. A delegation of the MBM
Production warmly received them at the Kuwait
International Airport. It is after a very long time
that Master Vaz - Marcus Vaz (the father-son duo) will
perform together on 10th September 2004 at the Hawalli
Auditorium, Kuwait.

Master Vaz - does not need an introduction, however to
the Kuwait-based tiatr lovers, the following brief
news item will give an insight on one of the senior
Konkani stage artistes amongst us.

Master Vaz, a resident of Utorda, was seven years old
when he started acting on the Konkani stage. Acting
was in his blood because his father, Mister Vaz
(Benjamin Vaz) and mother, Maria Aurora Vaz were also
tiatrists. His real name is Jose Lourenco Vaz, but the
audience preferred calling him Master Vaz and the name
remained. “I have acted in innumerable tiatrs. I just
can’t say how many,” says this 75-year old actor who
has acted alongside famous Konkani tiatrists of
yesteryears like J P Souzaline, M Boyer, etc.

Earlier, girls used to not act in tiatrs, he narrates.
So if the story demanded a girl, the male actors used
to dress as females and do the act. Master Vaz fondly
recalls that he along with others like Remmy Colaco,
Luis Rod, Andrew Fernandes, some of them who used to
act as girls. It was only in C Alvares’ "Avoichem
Kortub" that Miss Mona became the first girl to act on
the Konkani stage, he reveals.

As a Konkani tiatrist he has performed in Goa, Delhi,
Mumbai, Poona, Malwan, Africa, Mombasa, Campala,
Nairobi, Nakuru, etc. Master Vaz has also written and
directed about 25 Konkani tiatrs. Menino Render, Bapui
Malgoddo, Put Fulgoddo are some of them. Besides, he
has also composed songs for various tiatrs including
the title-song of the first Konkani movie, "Mogacho
Anvddo" directed by Jerry Braganza. He has also acted
in the Konkani movie, "Amchem Noxib".

Master Vaz was honoured by the Konkani Heritage,
Kuwait, on August 18, last year, for his immense
contribution to the growth of tiatrs. He was also
presented with the State Cultural Award by the state
government in 1996-97. “I feel that the government
must award female Konkani actors too, as it will give
a boost to the talents in them,” suggests Master Vaz.

Now, Master Vaz writes and directs Konkani plays (one
hour shows) for All India Radio. He has also composed
and sung a song in his son, Marcus’ Konkani music
cassette called 'Goenchi Girestkai' which will be
released next month. He also trains others in acting
as he believes in passing on to others what he has
learnt in his lifetime. “You know, I might have become
old, but the actor in me is still young,” he adds.

KGTS Condolence Meeting Held

A condolence meeting was held by the Kuwait-Goa
Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) on 20-02-05 at the Royal
Terrasse, Salmiya-Kuwait to offer prayers on the
untimely demise of Mr. Francis Peter Thomas D'Souza -
popularly known in Konkani theatre circle as "Bab
Peter" - who passed away on 19-02-05 in Bahrain.

KGTS founder member, Cajetan de Sanvordem, commenced
the condolence meeting with a short prayer.

KGTS President Francis de Verna in his introductory
speech highlighted the great loss to all Konkani
Lovers. The President remembered Bab Peter as a young
lad when he rendered his first song in the Tiatr
"DOTH" directed by Bab Romald Fernandes (of Vasco).
Thereafter it was the late Alfred Rose who gave a
boost to Bab Peter by giving him a chance in his own
tiatrs. "Bab Peter's demise will surely leave a void
in the Konkani Tiatr circle".

Cajetan de Sanvordem remarked that Bab Peter's death
was a terrible blow to him. Bab Peter was a
happy-go-lucky person who always kept smiling. Bab
Peter spent his life happily without hurting others
and he would go out of his way to help his fellow
Tiatrist.

Another KGTS founder member Jose Rod fighting to
control his emotions, bid a tearful farewell to Bab
Peter whom he considered a dear friend. For Jose Rod,
he was among the best of buddies. He remembered Bab
Peter to be a person very much young at heart and
always made others feel comfortable and at ease while
conversing with them. Tears flowing down his cheeks
Jose Rod recollected various aspects of their lives as
friends. On a final note Jose Rod remarked "it is
very difficult to come across such a dear friend and a
Tiatrist".

Junnifer Rod (KGTS founder member) remembers Bab Peter
very well since 1964. They both took part in a singing
competition (Natalamchi Bhett programme) organized by
late Alfred Rose in Bangwaddi (Mumbai). Bab Peter was
adjudged as the first prize winner while Junnifer Rod
stood second. When the news broke out about him, there
was very little that could be done but pray. Bab
Peter's death had come as a shock.

KGTS Vice President Sylvester Vaz expressed deep
sorrow when he heard that Bab Peter is no more.
Sylvester recalled that he had the opportunity to be a
part of Jose Rod's drama "Tujem Nanv Vhodd Zanv" in
Goa, and that’s when he first met Bab Peter. Bab
Peter greeted him with a warm smile and eventually had
won his heart.

Marcus Vaz, the initiator of KGTS, found himself short
of words to show how deeply he was hurt at the death
of Bab Peter. Choking with emotions, Marcus' parents
in Goa too were very much in sorrow, when the news was
conveyed to them. Bab Peter was remembered for his
association with Marcus Vaz since at a young age they
both acted in Tiatrs.

Comedian Philip remembered Bab Peter as a good friend
who used to make others feel at ease. He was always
helpful and treated other artistes with great respect
and dignity.

Manuel de Santa Cruz recalled that he saw Bab Peter
perform on stage years ago. He recollected that he
thought to himself that one day this child artiste
would come up in life on the Konkani Stage. The
popularity of Bab Peter bore testimony to these
thoughts. Manuel met Bab Peter in Goa on 16/12/2003
when he was introduced by Peter-Roshan. During their
conversation Bab Peter expressed happiness that Kuwait
based Goan Tiatrists had formed the "Kuwait-Goa
Tiatristanchi Sonvstha" to work for the benefit of the
retired senior most Konkani stage artistes and to
promote young talents.

Caji de Benaulim remarked that two years back while on
a short work assignment he was transferred to Bahrain,
and was having difficulty adjusting himself in a
remote area. It was during this lean period that Caji
started looking out for a friendly face and made
enquiries about Bab Peter. Before Caji could track Bab
Peter, the latter had come personally to visit Caji
and inquired about his well being. It was a great
gesture, Caji fondly remembers.

Dominic Araujo considered Bab Peter to be his
favourite singer and had appropriately nick-named him
the 'Muffler Man' befitting his style of wearing a
muffler around his neck for every appearance. His
death is very difficult to imagine. All we can do is
to pray for his soul.

Martin Martins stated that he knew Bab Peter for a
long time. They used to hang around in their village,
together with Bonaventure de Peitro, he fondly
recollected. His death is a great loss.

Mario de Majorda recalled his association with Bab
Peter was during Jose Rod's 'Tujem Nanv Vhodd Zanv'
drama staged in Kuwait and in the Gulf States. It was
during this Gulf tour that Bab Peter left a lasting
impression with his kind gesture of a concerned human
being and timely assistance where needed. Bab Peter
was truly a marvelous person.

Alas God has his own plans – May the soul of Bab Peter
rest in peace.

It is nice to know KGTS doing wonderful job to help aged Goan Tiatrists and musicians.

Here, let me also mention that there are some schemes/help also available to goan artists
including taitrist/musicians etc.

Many time we are (specially Christians) are not aware of this schemes. e.g. Last year Govt.
organised X'mas Crib competition at district level top prize being Rs.25,000 each. But when we
enquired about this in the south (the organisers of fine cribs, told us that they were not
aware of this and hence not registered for the competition).

Village panchayt and the constituency MLA should make sure that all the available Govt.
schemes are promoted or taken to the people at every village/ward level.

OK, coming to the financial help to goan artists..

Goa Govt. give awards to 14 people every year for State Cultural Awards to those who are 55
and above of age. Each one is awarded Rs.20,000 besides other stuff like Momento etc
Artists like Music/dance/Tiatre-Drama/craft art/painting/kirtan/literature etc are eligible.

There is another scheme 'Financial Scheme to deserving (financially weak) artists' it is
called 'KALA SANMAN'
Rs. 1250 to Rs.1,600 awarded per month to thos who are 58 and above

On top, one should not forget that there is a monthly assistence to old aged of Rs. 750 which
comes under Directorate of Social Services - Minister Subash Shirodkar

Ulhas Buyao spell bounds audience with his Golden
voice

- by Joseph Fernandes.

The Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) mega
event is an annual feature in the calendar of Konkani
tiatrs and musicals. This year KGTS celebrates its
official fifth anniversary on March 22nd, 2007 and
this grand celebration culminated into its eagerly
awaited mega musical show “Konknni Machiechi Itihas”
(History of the Konkani Stage). The KGTS committee and
their galaxy of sparkling cream of talented
artistes/members leave no stone unturned to make every
year’s presentation a treasured and memorable one. The
hard work, efforts and sacrifices exerted by the
members is tremendous and every Goan applauds them for
their teamwork and dedication. Such groups as well as
the events are very rare in Kuwait and KGTS are
complimented for the lovely performances they put up
with the visiting senior musicians and artistes.
It was the versatile senior singer Ulhas Buyao who
mesmerized the audience in his own unique style of
singing. It may be recalled that he has taken Konkani
to new heights and still strongly struggles for
recognition of the Romi (Latin) script Konkani at par
with the official status given to the state language
of Goa. He performed in Kuwait for the first time.
The energy charged Ulhas Buyao kept the audience
spell bound to their seats when he performed some of
his memorable songs including the immortal ‘Chaneachea
Rati’ (Skylit Night) and “Deva Mhojea Deva” (Oh God,
My God). Many among the audience who heard his
enchanting songs on All India Radio - Panjim station
saw him perform live on stage for the very first time.
Personally, since childhood, I have listened to his
melodious and moral songs, and cherished them to-date
and it is due to the KGTS, my dream of witnessing
Ulhas Buyao perform live was fulfilled. People change
but their love for their motherland cannot be
hindered. His songs evoked the true spirit of love
that dwells in the true sons of the soil GOA. He was
honored on stage with a Memento and a shawl. Another
stalwart Seby F. whose songs like “Mira, Mira”
transport you to the land of true lovers! With a
voice as fresh as spring dew giving hope beyond hope
and a soothing balm to grieving hearts, Seby
electrified the audiences with a power packed
performance. "Ago Cheddva" was a refreshing journey to
1980s and "Carnival" left the audiences hungry for
more from this bubbly singer. Thanks to KGTS for the
noble cause of recognition for those tiatrists
(dramatists) and musicians back home in Goa, Mumbai or
Mangalore - who have contributed immensely to the
Tiatrists fraternity for decades. At this year’s
event, 12 reputed stage artistes and musicians were
flown specially from India to perform for the show,
courtesy of Victor Fernandes of Metro Express. KGTS is
the only organization that strives to create awareness
of the yesteryears artistes whose contribution to the
Konkani stage has not received recognition and
appreciation – even from the Goa government. The
entertainment filled evening saw real memorable
performances from all visiting artistes. Their
impeccable style and flawless dialogue delivery were
left the audience spellbound to the end. The King of
Centuries Roseferns who has penned, directed and
staged more than 50 non-stop dramas, Tragedy King
Mario Menezes, Rosy Alvares and Comedians Joana, Ambe,
Sally and John D’Silva with Sidhanath Buyao put up a
great show. Rosy Alvares' performance as a child
suffering from Down syndrome was mind blowing and
commendable. Since school days, I saw Rosy Alvares
perform in school dramas at Monte de Guirim. She has
truly matured in the art of acting and has conquered
all contours of character acting. Given any role, she
can mould well and deliver the desired act with her
bold performance. Two outstanding musicians Babush
Fernandes and Filipe de Sanvordem among the visiting
artistes were honored at the glittering event and
instated as the beneficiaries of KGTS Mega Show 2007
receiving Memento, shawl and cash award for their
glorious contribution towards the art of the tiatr.
Yesteryears’ stars of the Konkani stage Aninha Dias
(Anita), Patrick de Verna, Antonette Mendes, Ophelia
Cabral and Remmie Colaco were the KGTS beneficiaries
for the year 2006. KGTS also sponsored publishing a
Konkani book “Konknni Oparincho Jhelo” of Brazinho
Soares The lighting by SPA – Santana Piedade Afonso,
stage setting by Menino de Ribandar and Socorro De
Melo’s chosen musicians – Domnic Savio, Faustinho
Menezes, Philip Gracias, Frederico de Melo and Philip
Menezes received thunderous applause. Goa’s famous
playback singer Adolf Fernandes was a surprise
addition to the cast who rendered his voice for the
opening of the mega musical depicting the history of
the Konkani stage. The Kuwait-based artistes’
performances were commendable including those newly
joined in the KGTS fold - Francis de Tuem and Jenny
D’Souza. KGTS members strive to project something
novel in their presentation – the stage setting, the
sound system, lights and the gallery potraying the
tiatr publicity leaflets – a unique concept of
perpetualizing the memories of yesteryear tiatr and
tiatrists. One can only wait and watch, what KGTS
will roll-up in their future mega events. A carnival
presentation including “King Momo” and his entourage
brought the curtains down to a glitzy function
announcing the season of festivities and fun.

KGTS enjoys a wide patronage and the list of over 200
Goans and prominent commercial entities sponsoring and
advertising in KGTS’ annual souvenir is noteworthy.
The local press and internet media support especially
Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter is unparalleled for any Goan
event for all the past four annual events. Just a
couple of days earlier, KGTS achieved a new milestone
in organizing the first Konkani Tiatr Workshop headed
by stalwart of Konkani Tiatr Roseferns. The education
oriented workshop highlighted and deliberated on the
basic aspects of script writing, direction, rehearsal,
music, songs, cantos, background music, stage setting,
lights, backstage requirements, costume, make-up, and
others. KGTS members enacted two skits as models for
understanding the fundamentals, salient features of
every aspect and later put up for discussion in the
question-answer session coordinated by Jose Rod and
Gracy Morais. The event patronized by Albano Pinto and
Family had its motto as “Making better artistes and
audiences”. This workshop served as a platform for
bridging the gap between the artistes and audiences
and provided an opportunity for the Tiatrist
fraternity to understand the audiences better. While
retaining the current segment of audience, tapping new
talent, fresh ideas, innovative scripts, training and
education in theatre was need of the hour to save and
maintain this cultural heritage. As Katty de Navelim,
KGTS president’s message in their Souvenir reads:
“KGTS is proud about its achievements of crossing
boundaries and achieving milestones promoting Konkani
tiatr, its rich Goan culture, heritage and Konkani
language”, it only remains to been seen if the Goan
Clubs and Associations based in India, Kuwait and Gulf
Regions, and globally would pitch in, in support of
KGTS in its march ahead to promote Konkani Tiatr and
Konkani Tiatrists. (Kuwait Times/27-2-07 and Arab
Times/28-2-07)

Tribute to Sanny de Quepem

Cruz Sanny Vaz (well known as Sanny de Quepem amongst the tiatrists fraternity and the tiatr lovers in Kuwait, Goa and worldwide) was called by the Almighty God to His Heavenly Abode on 9th November 2007. With a smile on his lips and eyes focused on God’s will, he was laid to rest at his native place in Quepem. Attended by scores of his close friends, colleagues and manager from Mustafa Karam Firm, tiatrists and tiatr lovers and his well-wishers with tears in their eyes and a prayer, the requiem mass was offered by Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS).

Bab Sanny was one of the rarest jewels produced by the Konkani stage and known among the tiatr lovers for his scintillating songs on social and moral subjects. His specialty was in composing and singing songs in a unique way. His songs served as a whip to all types of injustice in the society and for the Goan causes. He mesmerized Goans as an actor, composer, singer, and writer. Though in his fifties, he had the style and caliber to perform as an evergreen singer with his youthful looks and his trademark shaved torso. His last song will be much cherished on his theme of fostering unity among mankind. Always eager to assist and help, the tiatrists fraternity will feel the void left in his dealth. The death has snatched away a dear friend and an entertainer from us.

A meeting was held at the Royale Terrace Restaurant, Salmiya on 17th November 2007 and KGTS members took this opportunity to offer prayers and poignant tributes to this Konkani stage artiste and singer and conveyed heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace.

AN INTERVIEW with FRANCIS DE VERNA
- one of the guest stars of BLACK

FRANCIS de VERNA is a long time resident in Kuwait.
He has been on the Konkani stage in Goa and Mumbai
since 1965. He has been elected to several Goan
organizations including the Goan Welfare Society
(GWS), and Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS),
and performs/sings on stage regularly. His Konkani
AUDIO Album 'Ojapanchi Maim' in dedication to Mother
Mary speaks much about the humble star's ingenuity in
music and his ideological vision.

In a brief Interview to www.goa-world.com team, the
senior Kuwait-based Goan Konkani stage artiste who
plays a guest appearance role in the first Konkani
E-Cinema “BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion”, Francis de
Verna revealed his heart:

Excerpts:

Q. Tell us about what you felt about BLACK on its
release.

Francis de Verna: To my knowledge and experience of
Konkani entertainment in over 40 years, the film is
fantastic with the best music ever produced for a
Konkani film.

Q. Describe those moments when you saw yourself on the
big screen.

Francis de Verna: As this was my first appearance on
the big screen, I felt very happy and am proud to have
acted in the first Konkani E-cinema.

Q. Comment on your role in Black.

Francis de Verna: My role is very simple but I liked
it as it is -- short and sweet.

Q. How do you usually choose your roles?

Francis de Verna: I choose my roles based on my
ability to do justice for the ‘character’ portrayed.

Q. How hard is your effort and commitment towards
acting?

Francis de Verna: I have been performing on the stage
since 1965. I have acted and sung for most of the
yesteryear’s dramatists and troupes. I love the
Konkani stage and will continue to work for it. I
always put my utmost efforts and given an opportunity
I commit myself to perform to the best of my ability.

Q. Which kind of characters do you like acting?

Francis de Verna: My characters are always of
tragedy, and as long as I live I will do ‘sad’ roles.
It gives me great enthusiasm to perform such roles.
It gives me the strength to display my natural
capabilities towards the enactment of such roles.

Q. Of late you are not heard of after BLACK. Why?

Francis de Verna: As we all are well aware, one’s job
is more important in this part of the country for
survival. Could be in the next film, I may be there
with a better performance or in the next tiatr. I
sang a song on ‘Goa Day’ very recently. If time
permits, I would be ready to perform for all the
forthcoming dramas, but sadly it is not to be so as my
job is of such nature that I have to be in action at
short notice.

Q. What are your views on Goan films?

Francis de Verna: Good prospects. Our village son
from Verna T-Bush can now be considered as one of the
Indian film greats! With the unique technology and
sound system incorporated in ‘BLACK’, T-Bush has
become a shining star of this genre. He is a pride of
all Goans. Moreover, he has made Kuwait Goans proud
producing the first E-Cinema from Kuwait.

Q. Tell us about your favourite artistes and films.

Francis de Verna: My favorite artistes were C.Alvares
and Cecilia Machado. ‘Amchem Noxib’, ‘Nirmonn’ and
‘Mogacho Anvddo’ are the best Konkani films I’ve
watched in the theatres.

Q. How would you rate yourself as an artiste?

Francis de Verna: As you are well aware singing and
acting is in my blood. I rate myself in the top
category of Konkani Stage artistes. As I mentioned
earlier, I have been involved in many cultural
activities right from my schooldays and I have always
earned a good name as an artiste. That’s how I wish
to remain.

Q. What are your other future aspirations?

Francis de Verna: Retiring peacefully in our beautiful
Goa is my dream. I also wish to continue my good work
on stage with the blessings of Almighty God.

Star of yesteryears - Souza Guiao
Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha kgts_10 at hotmail.com
Tue Feb 3 06:42:50 PST 2004

Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha, Kuwait deeply mourns the sad demise of
Mr. Francisco Xavier Guiso De Souza, popularly known as Souza Guiao, a
versatile personality of Konkani Stage and films.

A star of yesteryears, Mr. Guiao expired on January 31 at his residence at
Calangute and was cremated on February 1, 2004. The KGTS President and
Members condole the death of a fellow tiatrist and offer their deepest
sympathies to the bereaved family.

KGTS felicitation of Master Vaz

Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) diary turned
another golden leaf in the history of Tiatr in Kuwait
on 17th September 2004 when it donned the colours of
being a platform for fostering the cause of Tiatrists
and Goan Tiatr fraternity by felicitating one of the
living legends of Konkani stage, Mr. Jose Lourenco Vaz
or very popularly known as Master
Vaz.

The function held at Village Inn Restaurant, Kuwait
City, kicked off with a standing ovation for Master
Vaz led by Francis de Verna, President of KGTS
Managing Committee 2004-05. A warm welcome was
extended to a huge gathering by Mario Fernandes,
General Secretary, followed by a short prayer and then
a lively chorus song "Master Vaz" composed and led
by Sylvester Vaz along with Gracy Morais & Laurie
Miranda accompanied by Augusto Morais on the
Keyboards, depicting the theatrical
voyage - life of Master Vaz. A visibly moved Master
Vaz stood up to thank the gathering with tears of joy
for the superb recollection of his works in the song.

The President in his speech recollected the works of
Master Vaz along with his team mate the late, Minguel
Rod, the excellent rapport they shared and the aura
created by them on the stage enchanting the audiences.
Mr. Francis having spent a considerable number of
years in Mumbai had ample chance to see Master Vaz's
performances on the Stage. Mr. Francis thanked Master
Vaz and the yesteryears Tiatrist for paving a path for
the generations of tiatrists.

Cajetan Pereira, ex-President and founder Member of
KGTS, while speaking at the occasion, cited an example
comparing the life of Tiatrist to that of a Joker in
circus, "The Joker entertains as long as he dons the
makeup and makes people laugh; Sadly enough, the Joker
is soon forgotten when he is old, crippled or
denigrated in the shadows of old age". Mr. Pereira
emphasized the importance of honoring the Tiatrists
and their achievements during their lifetimes and once
again lauded the KGTS mission of working towards this
very cause.

Marcus Vaz, son of Master Vaz, a popularly known
Konkani stage artist and the founder of KGTS was
invited to talk about the life of his father. Marcus,
who has worked so closely with his father from his
childhood spoke in few words about the difficulties,
especially monetary, the yesteryears tiatrists had to
endure to preserve this lively form of art. Speaking
about the sacrifices of the Tiatrists'
families, Marcus remembered that the tiatrists would
go to the extent of using family gold or even the
saris of their wives to fund for the tiatrs. Mr. Vaz
concluded that it is due to the overwhelming love of
the yesteryears tiatrists that Tiatr has survived
turbulences of time and it is for the current
Tiatrists to carry the torch from generations to
generations.

Another senior tiatrist and KGTS Member, Manuel de
Santa Cruz remembered coming across the works of
Master Vaz in the book "Tiatr &Tiatrist" (by Fausto V.
Da Costa). Mr. Manuel stated that he was remarkably
pleased to read about Master Vaz's entry into the
tiatr foyer at a tender age of 7 under the tutelage of
immensely talented parents
Mr. Benjamin (then known as Mr. Vaz) and Mrs. Aurora
Vaz.

During the presentation ceremony, a glittering plaque
was presented to Master Vaz by the KGTS President
commemorating his dedicated services to the Konkani
stage.

Master Vaz, in a very emotive speech thanked his sons,
Marcus and Benny primarily for bringing him to
Kuwait. In his words, he never envisioned to travel
to Kuwait and act in a drama. He conveyed his
sincerest thanks to the KGTS for it's great service to
the Tiatr fraternity. He told the gathering that his
sons had told him that KGTS had collected
and sent Rs. 25,000 each to 4 beneficiaries including
Mary Vaz, Roam Tony, Prem Kumar and John Nazareth.
He remembered that during his time, the tiatrists were
paid Rs. 25 for a show. Remembering Roam Tony, Master
Vaz said, "how happy Roam Tony must have felt
comparing the Rs. 25 earning per show of his times and
the Rs. 25,000 the KGTS has sent for his work today".
A humble man that he is, Master Vaz said "Now I feel I
have done something great, if the KGTS has deemed it
fit to felicitate me".

Gracy Morais, Auditor, in her vote of thanks, thanked
Master Vaz and his family for their valuable presence
at the occasion. She also thanked KGTS Managing
Committee, Members and their families for their
unanimous support at all times in KGTS activities.

Mr. Mario concluded the session by once again inviting
all the guests to join in the song, "Master Vaz". The
function ended with a sumptuous breakfast served by
the Village Inn Caterers and with the KGTS more
determined in their role of fostering the cause of
Tiatr and Tiatrists fraternity.

___________
Note: Francis De Verna, heads the Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha
Steering Committee and Members for the year 2003-2004. KGTS will stage
their Mega Musical Show “Tiatr ani Tiatrist” on February 20, 2003 at Gulf
English School, Rumaithiya at 3:30 pm. Remember, the entertainment is all
yours.

1943 saw the birth of yet another rising star of Konkani stage.

Francis Fernandes, popularly known as Francis de Verna, set his feet on the
Stage at the age of 15 in Bombay (now Mumbai). While many of today’s
dramatists made an early start by acting and singing in other director’s
tiatrs, Francis made a humble beginning by writing small plays for the
school functions. A student of Dr. Antonio D’ Silva College and St. Michael
Night High School, Francis tried his hand at composing Konkani songs-
something which came to him naturally. Although blessed with a good voice
and natural acting talent, Francis found it difficult to gain an entry in
the tiatr world, especially in Bombay where every struggling artiste would
be screened thoroughly unless patronised by a known artiste or relative.
Amateur at his work, Francis watched some of the leading personalities
perform on Konkani Stage. He kept a low profile amassing rich knowledge,
experience and techniques of this lovely form of art all aimed towards
realising one dream: performing on the Konkani Stage.

Francis’ first break on the professional stage came through “Doth” a play
staged by Romald Fernandes from Vasco. By now a charming man, with an
impeccable personality, more importantly who could act and sing, Francis
landed up with the main role opposite Jessie Dias followed by “Put Goenche”.
But the most important moment in his life came through ”Churchureanchem
Kazar” presented by Alfred Rose (written by Reginald Fernandes) since this
was staged at Princess Theatre, Bhangwadi Bombay. Then followed main and
character roles in “Zogzogta titlem Bhangar Nhoim” by Rico Rod, “Bhailecho
Adar” jointly directed by Rico Rod & M. Boyer, ”Kakut” by Prem Kumar,
“Ekvottachem Foll” by H. Britton, “Angounnechi Okol - Lakhpoti Nouro” by
Alfred Rose and a negative character in “Vigans” by Peter V. Fernandes.

Francis does not have a count for the innumerable songs he has sung in the
tiatrs and the roles he has performed in other tiatrs during his stay in
Bombay. However, he had a distinct privilege of working with the legend and
melody King Alfred Rose. ”It was Alfi (lovingly for Alfred Rose) who
encouraged and promoted me to sing on the stage” Francis continued to tell
us “He also gave me a chance to do background singing in English and Konkani
for HMV”. Fully inspired, Francis also sang an English song “ I have fallen
in love” on the Bhangwadi Stage.

He reminisces with fondness his work with Souza Ferrao, Anthony D’ Sa,
Cecilia Machado, Robin Vaz, Alfred Rose, Rita Rose, Succorine, Prem Kumar,
Benny de Aldona, Xavier Gomes, Tony Call, Mendes Bros, H. Britton, Carmo
Rod, Leo De Mello, Diogo Cardozo, Jessie Dias and many other leading
personalities of the stage. He was not lucky to work with his idol, C.
Alvares.

He staged his tiatr “Khoro Ixtt” in 1968 in Bombay, 1973 in Kuwait and 1990
in Goa. He also produced an audio album “Ojeapanchi Maim” a token of his
deep devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. He has plans to produce
another audio CD shortly.

Francis continues to take part is tiatrs staged in Kuwait. A man of few
words and quiet disposition, Francis humbly requests the younger generations
of Tiatrists to be dedicated to this form of art and work in unity to
promote Konkani language.

It will create a sort of awareness of the current Romi script issue

The issue of Konkani Romi script is seen only in print and electronic media
but so far no songs have been sung in tiatrs by the tiatrists. While Romi
fighters like Godfreyji, Fr. Pratap Naik n rest are making all out efforts
to get the official recognition it would be better if the Tiatrist's lend
them their hand in giving the message to our Goan brothers back home.

JUJU (Saxophone) – AGNELO (Trumpet) – LUIS (Trumpet)
SUCCOUR (Lead Guitar) – TONY (Music Conductor) - FAUSTINO (Trumpet)

To be Goan is to love music. They say, we breathe music, we talk music, we
live music, we dine music and the list goes on endlessly. Goa, the land of
sun, sea, churches, temples and beaches has been blessed in abundance with a
talent for Music, the lifeline and a strong base of folklore, culture and
forms of dances. Any reason, any occasion is just good enough to have music,
be it a party, feast, death, or just anything. The best source of
entertainment is not just skin deep, but the soul of Goans living in Goa and
any part of the world.

Goa has produced many praiseworthy and leading musicians including Chris
Perry, Remo Fernandes, Braz Gonsalves, Anthony Gonsalves, Sebastian D’Souza,
Frank Fernandes, Johnny Baptist, Emiliano Da Cruz and many others who have
exhibited their talents worldwide. Some of our musicians have been
pacemakers in the Hindi Film industry. Many others have excelled in this
field and are mostly sought after for orchestras, Goan bands, parties, etc.
Some have contributed manifolds for the Konkani tiatr.

The writers had a rare opportunity to talk with the cream of the
naturally-gifted and outstandingly talented musicians of the tiatr
fraternity, some locally engaged and a few who have specially flown to be a
part of the never ever before KGTS Mega Musical extravaganza, “Tiatr Ani
Tiatrist”:

AGNELO DIAS, resident of Fontainhas, Panjim, learned solfegio in the
Immaculate Church School. Originally a violinist, Agnelo was inspired to
switch over to trumpet when he watched Chris Perry in his musical “Novro
Mhozo Denvchar”. He trained under Maestre Santana Cota of Santa Cruz.
Agnelo played his first tiatr in 1974 in Santa Cruz. A recipient of 21 Best
Musician Award from the all Goa Tiatr Competition organized by Kala Academy,
Agnelo journey in the tiatr field has been full of adventures,
experimentations and gratification. He has played more than 2000 tiatrs in
a career span of 25 years and also rendered music to as many as 25
audiocassettes. As a token of his appreciation two years ago, he had a
unique celebration of his 50 years in this world and 25 years of service to
the tiatr world; he felicitated ten leading persona of the Konkani Stage and
literature for their immense contribution in their respective fields. Some
these were Luis Cota, Domingo Caitan, Cesar D’Mello, Ratna Govekar, Diana,
Luis Barbosa, Brazinho Soares.

When asked about the deterioration of brass music and musicians in Goa,
Angelo commented that the techno music can never replace the brass music, he
soul of Latino music we enjoy in Goa. Continuing he stated that “one cannot
be forced into playing brass instruments, this has to come from within. It
is easier to sequence the music, but then you are cheating the people and
also yourself; Also brass instruments cannot be learnt overnight; you need a
lot of perseverance, continuous regime and more importantly minimum 1-2
hours practice session every day”. Talking to him about the pathetic
financial gains which time and again depresses the brass section of Goa and
discourages acutely the budding talent for brass music, Agnelo confided that
this profession earns him approx a lakh and a half rupees annually only on
tiatrs besides the other contracts. He said, dedication and perseverance
are the magic words, which work in any field and so also in the music or
tiatr world. More and more youngsters are lured by the techno music and
sequencing which makes our musicians more of dummies and imitators. Music in
any form is good, but most important is the sincerity in doing any job.”
Perhaps this should show the way and encourage many budding Goan musicians
to embrace this grand brass section of music.

JOSE ANASTASIO FERNANDES, popularly known as Juju, learned music with his
father Roque Jacinto Fernandes, who played violin and piano in the Benaulim
Church. Although now one of the most sought after musician of Goa, Juju
started his work in the music world as a Crooner for the AVC
(Assolna-Velim-Cuncolim) Pops. He took up playing Saxophone in 1970. Little
does anyone know that Juju traveled to Kuwait in 1970 as a part of a Circus
Company and worked with them for 2 and half months in Kuwait. He then
traveled to Iran and worked there for 2 years before traveling back to Goa
in 1972. While in Goa he formed his own band group, Hard rocks with a few
musicians from Goa. His career graph shows landmarks of Hotel Ganpat in
Madras for 1 year, and then another hotel in Kerala for 5 years. Later he
came back to his motherland and regrouped his band Hard Rocks, and
occasionally substituted for Fidelis for some Konkani dramas. The demand for
brass music and dearth of brass musicians in Goa prompted Juju to switch to
tiatrs. Also, the techno music changed the scene of music in Goa and so
also the tastes of Goans who demanded techno music for parties, weddings,
anniversaries, etc. However, this turned into a blessing in disguise for
the tiatr world, Juju and His Boys have taken the tiatrs by a storm; ask the
tiatrists and the audience, they are a witness to his work.

LUIS RODRIGUES, a multi-faceted and multi-talented musician hails from
Ribandar. Luis learned solfegio under the famous Moira priest, Fr. Fremiot
D’ Souza who was a chaplain in Chimbel Chapel during the period 1952-55. A
self-learner of violin from the Tutor books, Luis mastered the art and was a
Church Choir Master for more than 13 years. Simultaneously he self trained
himself under Fred& Pitt tutorials and excelled the art of playing trumpet
within 3 years. A born natural and die-hard for music, Luis works zealously
for his passionate hobby and profession. He played his first tiatr in the
year 1968 in Merces. He along with a few equally gifted musicians formed the
group, Band Azavedo that dominated the Bardez, Tiswadi talukas of Goa for
nearly 15 years. Later, Luis moved to form his own brass band and continued
to offer valuable support to many dramas at the village level and
professional stage. Last 5 years saw him teaming up with another outstanding
and class musician, Luis Cota, the son of eminent Santana Cota who trained
many musicians of the soil. Luis is also a natural stage artist; he has
staged about 8 tiatrs in the village; sung unaccounted number of songs;
composed more than 1000 songs; played for Orchestras of Fr. Bernado Cota,
audiocassettes; and is now in Kuwait to play for the KGTS show. Due to
failing health, Luis has slowed down his pace and taken up playing Alto
Saxophone, but no one can persuade him to give up music. He has told his
children “ I do not mind if I die while playing trumpet; this is my
lifeline, please do not take it away from me”. With this determination and a
lot of music still left in him, one can only wish him luck and best wishes
to continue his tryst with music and his passion of playing trumpet,
saxophone and violin.

SUCCOUR DE MELLO, need no introduction in the Kuwait tiatr fraternity.
Trained under his father, Zezoti De Mello, Succour learned music at home and
then in a School in Bombay. Succour remembers his first public performance
at the Konkani Manddo festival in 1970 organized by Fr. Lobo of St. Rita
School where he played guitar. His first Konkani drama in 1983 was a
children’s drama staged in Canacona. His first full-fledged Konkani drama
was with Clement and Augusto from Quepem/Canacona. And thereafter, he played
for many Konkani dramas and All India Radio (at that time called
“emissoras”). In Kuwait, the first Konkani drama he played for is ‘Kuwaitcho
Mog” staged in the old Indian Arts Circle in Salmiya where he played both
western and traditional music. He had a rare privilege of working with his
mentor, the ever-living legend Chris Perry and played for all his songs in
his cassette “Cu cu ru cu” except for the four songs played by Tony Vaz.
Chris will always remain his favourite. Succour wishes he had more time with
Chris to understanding his intrinsic values, his style and his work.

“A dream project”, as Succour put it, he has meticulously worked for the
KGTS Show sparing no efforts in spinning the best ever melodies, interludes
and accompaniments for most of the songs. Weaving the web of scintillating
music and later training the local musicians has been a major task for this
exceptionally talented person for last many weeks. He hopes that after this
show, more and more Tiatrists, Associations, Clubs in Kuwait will be
encouraged to have such performances at least once a year. Succour feels
very bad about the standard of music in our Konkani dramas, “It is more
synthetic- we are almost forgetting our brass instruments music. I really
wish we would preserve our tradition of using brass instruments like
saxophone, trumpet for our dramas. If we cannot afford to have a full team
we could at least have one brass instrument playing for a drama”. He
continued, “Also it is time now to change our style of music keeping the
taste of traditional music the same but adding more flavour of western and
techno music to it. Experimentation with the traditional Goan music and
with a major input of western music is more appealing to public now. A
proper blend of traditional and western is just what is needed to set the
pace again. Frank Fernandes, Michael Martin, Chris Perry dared to change the
scene and became trendsetters, the legacy now is ours”. Succour has a major
project in pipeline, an audio album of different kind with many top-leading
singers of the Konkni world. Here is KGTS wishing him all the best in his
future endeavours.

TONY, Band Conductor for the Mega Musical, is a Music Teacher in English
Academy School, Kuwait. Tony learnt music under the East India priest, Boney
D’Souza, at the age of 10 and has been playing trumpet and drums ever since.
Originally from Chandor, Tony has spent most of his time with Don Bosco
School, Bombay, Poona and Bangalore. He had a rare privilege of playing in
the Orchestra-Brass Section during the last visit of Pope John Paul II in
Bombay. Tony has participated in many musical presentations during his
college days and also in Bangalore Amateurs Choral Harmony (BACH) annual
presentation in 1991. Blessed with a good voice and equally good singing
capabilities, Tony has sung and acted in the “Prodigal Son” “Joseph and
Technicolor Court” and “Fiddler on the Roof”. Basically a contented man,
Tony just wishes to carry on his profession of passing this valuable art and
form of entertainment to willing and musically inclined pupils.

FAUTINO ALBERT MENEZES, is the Music Master of English Academy School,
Kuwait. Resident of the pristine island of Goa, Divar, Faustino tutored
under Maestro Santana Cota of Santa Cruz. He played Trumpet in his first
show at the age of 12 and became a part of Don Bosco School Boarder Band
shortly. He was also a member of the Goa Symphony Orcehstra, Brass Section
for some time. Due to pathetic monetary returns in this field, Faustino got
discouraged to carry on with Trumpet and started playing guitar for some
beat groups in Goa. He travelled to Kuwait about a year ago and Succor, one
of the leading musicians in Kuwait, encouraged him to switch back to Trumpet
owing to the dearth of brass musician in this State. By now Faustino has
played for a few shows in Kuwait including Kala Mogui Kuwait Singing
Competition, Konkani Mungllurkarancho Ekvott, and Goa Day 2003. Faustino
feels he is still at the nascent stage of playing music for Konkani tiatro.
He is a fan of Chris Perry, he loved his experimentation with music. He
wishes our Konkani songs would transcend from the conventional form to a
much richer contemporary/Broadway musical form. He says there is no dearth
of talent, all we need to do is, experimentation and innovations. Faustino
plays trumpet for the KGTS Mega Musical show “Tiatr ani Tiatrist”
